Trial of the Demon Hunter (Chapter One/7k words of update demo available)

Well interactive fiction is a smaller market, and I’m just glad people make them

My favorite Cog complicated. I love the sailors one and romance .

Hosted probably WW and life of wizard. Yours have potential but need ironing issues for sequels like to add puzzles and down some purple.
also could put a kitty dress my titus imp so cute :x

@817819
The people going around senselessly leaving 1-3 ratings (IT’S NOT FREE!!! 1! or MY PHONE WON’T DOWNLOAD IT BECAUSE IT DOESN’T HAVE ENOUGH MEMORY! 2!!!) actually hinder the IF community.

@poison_mara
I took out some purple prose in my last update and I’ll add some puzzles in the sequel. Idk about cross gender boggart dressing but you can buy him ribbons for his antennas :stuck_out_tongue:

@Samuel_H_Young stupid people hinder all communities

@817819
Good point!

I really liked Choice of the Dragon, but I’m not sure how much of that is nostalgia. I wish they would make a sequel with more detailed choices, and maybe some more significant recurring characters. The fact that you were this really powerful being, and you just had this sandbox where you could mold the world around you, at least at first was really cool. Just wish there was more detailed character interaction too.

I really liked Zombie Exodus before it just became too depressing for me, but I had the same problem with Telltale’s Walking Dead.

Probably my favorite CoG so far would have to be Vendetta though.

I’ve liked pretty much all of the popular user made games, and some of the less popular ones too of course, but Vendetta really stands out to me for some reason I can’t quite put my finger on at the moment.

@Samuel_H_Young
People who give 1-3 star reviews for no good reason hinder app stores in general, never mind just the IF community! :confused:
Though to be fair, people who just spam 5 stars don’t do it any favour either.

I’ve downloaded my fair share of poorly rated apps that are actually quite good and five star apps that are total crap.
In general I don’t mind what people rate, as long as they have an honest and well thought out explanation.

One that really grated on me recently was a 3* Android review for ‘Tin Star’, which went something along the lines of:

“Excited at the thought of a large game but did it need to be a Western? Ugh!”

Like really…? Because that’s helpful how? -_-

Favourite games?
I actually like and at least make the effort to play most of the Hosted titles, but I’m a bit more picky with the ‘Choice of’ titles. That really honestly has nothing to do with the label, I think I just generally prefer the type of game we get from the forum community.

I started DH last night, the prose is very purple (I’m not sure if the patch has taken yet?), but I really like the pacing and choices so far.
One new suggestion, and this may just be entirely personal preference, but have you ever thought of listing the inventory line by line, as opposed to separating it with commas?

Rather than:

Rope, Dagger, Potions 8/8

It’d be:

INVENTORY

Rope
Dagger
Potions 8/8
Etc…

It’s not an issue, just a suggestion based on personal preference.

@CJW
Yeah, I don’t mind the bad reviews so much if they actually tell me what they didn’t like so I can fix it.

Yeah, I seem to like the Hosted Games a lot more. To me it seems like the majority of CoGs are alright, but the HGs are either spectacular or meh.

DH hasn’t been updated on Apple yet, but it’s been updated on Chrome, Android, Amazon and CoG. If you’re reading the Apple version, it’ll be substantially less polished. I’m glad you like it, btw :slight_smile:

As for the inventory, I’d thought about doing that, but I ended up choosing the comma version because of how many items you can end up having in your inventory; with all the different items, it’d make the stat page really long.

So far, I have not given less than a 5 cause I know it isnt easy to write for one. I rate due to enjoying a story. Now if I rated due to minor typo errors or sentence structures, lengths of stories and such, the score could drop. Which I dont do as there are updates for these to fix said mistakes except lengths. Some short ones I wish were longer but understand the writing side of these. I did the 5 ratings before I came into the forums to read what everyone says. I did send a note to one writer so far via email on a slight and very minor mistake. Its one of the beta testing stories.

Not sure I want to list my favorite CoGs or HGs in case it hijacks his thread here. :slight_smile: Sorry.

So far, this one was good, I am running another play through once again. It was fun killing everything at first but then died myself. :slight_smile: His comeuppance for killing all those critters for fun! “LOL! I laugh at your imputence my last play through character!” That was to myself on last playthrough in case someone didnt catch the phrase already. :slight_smile:

Honestly, keep up the good writing. I do fill in reviews when I rate them. I did mention spelling, grammar and such with a rating of a 5. :slight_smile:

@jjc37
Which device are you using? Almost all of the typos should be fixed on all platforms but Apple (plus Apple will have bugs and won’t have stats balanced, new content or achievements). Still, if you remember any of those typos I wouldn’t mind you pointing them out :wink:

Yeah it’s a little harder to survive when being brutal :stuck_out_tongue: I suppose it’s kind of a lesson. Plus, not killing your enemies gives you a chance to interact with them more.

Thanks for the good review :smiley:

I’m seriously wondering if Apple will ever update DH ._.

My update changed someone’s rating from a 1 to a 2 xD woohoo. It was the guy who thought I wrote Zombie Exodus.

@Samuel_H_Young but surely he’s right, as all ‘Hosted Games’ are written by the same person? It’s like how there’s only one author for the ‘Choice of’ games, otherwise they wouldn’t be released by the same app developer, obviously. I rated all your games 1 star by the way because they were way too short and the graphics were awful. I didn’t leave a review, though.

Flawless deduction, @RedGrave .
Truly commendable. Your perception is amazing… you should be a detective xD

What does purple mean for prose?

The typos and stuff… that was before your update. I havent played it just yet after the update. I will let you know when I come across one when I pick it up tomorrow… or rather later today (saturday).

@BrianBlack
“Too wordy”

@jjc73
Alright :slight_smile: I’ve already found one in the goblin fight.

@BrianBlack: Or elegant, elaborate, gothic… erudite and evocative… Lovecraftian, even. :smiley: I’m someone who doesn’t always like sparse, spare prose and enjoys sinking into words. But it’s true that there’s a time and place, or it can be overdone or get repetitious, or sometimes the audience just doesn’t go for it. With or without purple, violet, or magenta words, I’m looking forward to playing DH :slight_smile:

I’m a little confused about the update, though–should I wait to play it until someone confirms the Apple version has been updated, or is it fine now, just will be better later?

@Samuel_H_Young

I found a few more in Unnatural. Honestly I’m starting to think that there is a gremlin that keeps adding errors. Half of them seem to pop out of nowhere lol

@Caarolyne
Well, a lot of people still enjoyed DH before the update, but they probably bypassed most of the bugs and errors :stuck_out_tongue: I’d say give it a try now if you’re itching to read it, but don’t judge it too harshly until you’ve read the updated version.

@Nocturnal_Stillness
Same here! Like I thought I found all those typos but more keep popping up

Just saw one of your newest 1* ratings on iOS.

It made me angry when they said "20 mins to read and prob 20 mins to write) but just showed they had no idea about the effort required to make a game.
