Things that make you feel uncomfortable in games

Yes, yes you did. Everyone begin the shunning of faewkless.

Hmm, as exciting as continuing to chat on the world’s problems and possibly get kicked off the forums I feel that I think I will call it a night.

Honestly I don’t want to get into this right now. Yes, you defended pedophiles, and no, I’m not going into this argument because I’ve had it face to face with a friend and wanted to fight him. I am not discussing this any further, because I really do want to stay on this forum.
Also, there are actually groups that want to legalize it, so some of those monsters walk in the daylight.

I just had a wave of powerful disgust remembering that sensation, I can’t be the only one.

@BabbleYaggle Actually, fantastic point there about the portrayal of mentally ill people in games in general. Portrayals of mental illness in general usually makes me uncomfortable, especially since it’s rarely done well, and mostly used as an excuse for either 1) evilness or 2) magic powers.

@TechDragon610 I’m not aware that that is a rule.

There is actually one game in which you can play a rapist. I’m sure most people are either unaware of this, or they’ve forgotten about it.

I’m going to say, suck it up in regards to the ‘homosexual themes.’ Okay unfortunate word choice there, but still. We shouldn’t be relegated to side-branches. If you’re meaning graphic sex, well I can’t think of any games here at least that actually have graphic sex.

First: I second that, both of these games are fantastic and handle the aforementioned situations pretty well (It isn’t perfect, but it’s far better than most games that attempt to handle things like rampant misogyny or rape).

Second: What makes me most uncomfortable (that I haven’t seen mentioned) is characters being embarrassed or thrust into positions of complete social awkwardness. When things like that occur I usually have to turn off the tv or skip the scene.

I absolutely despise seeing heterosexual relationships forced on our children, these straights are shoving pro-straight porn down our children’s throats! First a straight character was outed as straight, and now they and their love interest are holding hands! This is just too far!

I was pretty sure I said that some of these don’t have examples. I thought it at least, dangit. As for the rape thing, give me a sec to dig, coulda swore I saw it somewhere official.

my bad. miss-remembered, it just means you’d have to mark it as 18+, as for the “sucking it up” thing, I figured I was going to get flak for that.

We generally recommend against posting links to obscene or sexually explicit content, but we generally allow links to interactive-fiction games that include such content, as long as they are clearly marked as “adult only.”

This includes games with intense horror themes, graphic descriptions of violence, explicit sexual content/erotica, or rape (explicit or implied). Use your best judgment.

If any discussion about adult-only games becomes offensive, the moderators reserve the right to censor the objectionable posts and close or remove the thread.

Minors: If you are a minor, you should not follow links that are explicitly marked as “adult”. If you do follow those links, we take no responsibility for what you find there. Furthermore, if you are a minor, and you tell us that you are a minor, and you post in a thread explicitly marked as “adult”, we will censor your posts.

@Faewkless While I understand your point but I’d suggest dropping it, because defending paedophiles, especially if you’re just doing it for academic interest, based solely on an article you read, is never, ever going to end well. Yes, there is a difference between those who choose to act on their desires and those who don’t. I think it generally goes without saying that when people say “paedophiles” they’re speaking of those in the former group.

Also remember that some people will be speaking from things they’ve directly experienced, and so playing devil’s advocate, just for the sake of it, is going to hurt and upset people.

I really dislike stage show.
It didn’t matter to me what reason she had for acting the way she did.
You see I have a lack of conviction and anger and only three things make me go into my state of cool rage(Idiocy, Ignorance, and just acting mean and like you’re superior to me) as I like anger conviction and empathy I can’t understand why people constantly lose their cool and insult others and just yell like children. So yea I dislike stage show

I can only think of two things that make me stay away from a game.

  1. Any game that pronounces their religious views or non- religious views or political standpoints and forces you to agree with that even if you don’t or else its game over is bleh.
  2. Misandry (Is the hatred of men) and Misogynist (Is the hatred of women) If done in games I would want an explanation rather than saying oh hay that girl/guy hates male/female period. No explanation as to why they hate males/females.

I am not playing devils advocate (I would just rather hide in a corner playing games) I just like hearing both sides. And also I am not saying we should like paedophiles or accept them or whatever. Its just one side says paedophiles are all horrible and some of them and a few scientists say(these are thpughts they can’t control) and as someone who has a condition imvolving unwanted uncontrollable thoughts. What I am saying is that we should actually learn more as it WILL benefit us. besides if you what went on in my head you might hate me as much as them. So can we end this or put this to pm’s if need be about paedophilia such.

I suppose I’ve never been in such an extreme of discomfort that I would have stopping playing a game.

But some things that I find uncomfortable would be:

  • Intense sexual situations. While I enjoy a good romance with tender moments, I’m not really into playing games of erotic nature (not that I’ve seen any on here, so no problems there).

  • Rape. Definitely a set-skipper for me. Even if it’s incorporated in a way that is used to set some sort of scene in a specific way of perspective for the viewer. It’s just uncomfortable and I’d rather not read about it.

  • Racism and sexist comments. Only if they’re used just to make conflict. I don’t mind if there’s a character that is racist or sexist because that’s how they’ve been raised/taught/etc and they’ve been in the game long enough where we can see and learn about their character. But if a character is introduced suddenly, with a racist comment out of the blue, just to start conflict for the MC, it’s something I find …maybe not uncomfortable? Irritating’s the word. It just feels as if that character was created for that purpose, and that purpose alone.

  • Religious themes. Religion created for the world of your story? That’s find with me! I even enjoy reading lore on the games and just how their beliefs affect what they do - or who they worship. But if it’s set to be a real reflection on a religion, I’m wary. If there was a game created that, say, walked you through a religion, then I’d be interested. There’s nothing wrong with that to me. But if it’s toggled to be pushed on you, I’d rather respect their views and take the nearest exit.

Can’t really think of much else except some things, like: pedophilia and cannibalism.

All in all, those are some things I’m wary of, but like I’ve said, I really haven’t come into contact with much (if any) of these concerns.

the internet is the only scenario where a person who depicts themselves as Toph (misspell? sorry, been awhile, and I never wrote her name.) can mock someone who depicts themselves as Bane. (seriously, I like the character but we have few similarities, I just figured it’d make a good pic.)

I can’t speak for everyone, but I know what my pet peeve in games I play is that games forget they’re games. Realism and serious + sometimes uncomfortable issues are indeed part of life and that must be dealt with.

The inclusion of grittiness can even add value to characters and the storyline, but I don’t want a game to take itself too seriously.

I play/read an interactive game for 2 main reasons: enveloping myself in a great storyline and escapism.

Side note: escapism can come in different forms from dealing with serious issues to being thrust in a different perspective to playing yourself in a different life, but escapism comes easily from some light-hearted albeit tone-fitting content.

Wait what.

I was making a joke based off @FairyGodfeather’s post.

Sorry if I insulted you.

I agree with you on escapism - it’s a drive towards my choice in games. I guess I’m generally uncomfortable with realistic games that are based off of real life. Not that there aren’t some great ones out there, but I tend to be drawn to sci-fi, fantasy, and the supernatural. Like you, I’m in it for the great storyline and escapism.

@faewkless I think that’s the definition of devil’s advocate, hun. But, despite the role in the current discussion, the importance of the having a devil’s advocate can’t be understated.

Nope, never read anything that made me feel uncomfortable.

The closest I might get is rolling my eyes at some “message” that’s obviously a view point shared by the author but meh, that’s going to happen on occasion. Nothing to get in a tizz about, as long as the rest of the story is good.

I know, right. There’s something about the impossible elements in a game that appeal so much. I think Community College Hero is a good example of a well-written game with some realism and light-hearted escapism.

No devils advocates actually take the unpopular side of things for the sake of debate.
I belive in informed decision making in that it doesn’t matter which side you believe in and what you say about them I won’t take my stance until I believe I have enough information from both sides to make a coherent and informed decision.
I do pick a side it has nothing to do with furthering debates because the side I pick is the one I belive in because I decided it after listening to info from both sides.
(Read my feelings on paedophiles thats what I believe in)

I don’t think it’s necessarily the unpopular side that a devil’s advocate takes, but, like you said, it does need to be unconsidered and further the debate.

However, I didn’t catch the last part of your actual beliefs about pedophiles. My mistake.
