The Wayhaven Chronicles General Discussion (SPOILER FREE FOR BOOK THREE!)

For the record, Sera has said that this villain will be worse than Murphy.

EDIT: You people have made me interact with the shit software that is tumblr, hope you’re happy.

I do believe that Hot Winged Guy was blonde. Although I don’t remember his name so can’t be too sure.

Oh no, we know that the Detective can’t solve shit to save their life at the best of times…

Wouldn’t that be nice. But honestly, I think them being a RO kinda denies it.

His actions or him as a person? Romance authors are known for pardoning war criminals, or so I’ve heard…

And who is this Hawkins guy, btw? I may be in the mood for war criminals…

Oh for the love of god, can someone turn off the slow mode already? It’s been days.

In what sense? More powerful or more evil?

I’ve replayed the demo again and I don’t think the MC has amnesia. At the beginning, the narrator or our MC mentions that they have been in many close-to-death encounters.

About the villain as LI. Are we talking about the Entity or the leader of the rogue supernatural beings?

*** EDIT ***

It seems the villain or Entity is going to be more evil than Murphy, so my question is:

How tf is our MC going to fall in love with someone like that??? I mean, Murphy killed so many people, some of them in the most horrendous way.

I posted the screenshots, make of them what you will.

Definitely Entity, as the villain romance is for this book only, and also the Rogue Leader is always female (and the current by far strongest hypothesis is that they’re also, y’know, a blood relation of the MC).

Soulmates and crap...

Exactly. And you can even get that vibe–that draw–to someone who rubs you the wrong way, where you want to be around them again even though you feel like strangling them half the time, simply because there’s something that clicks with you, if you bother looking past the initial grating feeling.

I agree that this… version?.. of soulmates is horrible.

This is why I say I’ve rarely seen it done well, because this is usually the way “soulmates” ends up getting presented in fiction. Typically, it seems like an excuse to allow one party to shit all over the other party with no consequences. It’s also an excuse to shove people together without ever having them both come to terms with themselves, their feelings, and ways they may need to alter their behavior in order to have a healthy relationship.

It’s how I see the A path, really, and–to an extent–M’s. In the LT, the MC is the one being a complete asshat, emotionally abusing the LIs. My husband loves it, but even though his comments during it make me laugh (he completely ignores the text and has his own “canon” dialogue going on in his head), I can’t help seeing the MC as a horrible person in that path! I guess that’s why he plays one LT-mancer as a complete sociopath (using Nat to get Ava) and the other as a “used-to-be-UwU-but-will-now-kick-your-ass” kind of MC, with her seeing Nate as a psychopath who will chain her in a closet, lol.

points and laughs :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, to be fair, the MC is a thirteen-year-old girl stuck in a 25ish year-old-body. It’s not their fault!!

I actually believe Mishka when she says this RO will be irredeemably evil. Now, my idea of irredeemable and her idea of irredeemable and starkly different things, but I think they will not be “good” (by Agency standards, as much as that is worth) at the end of b4, because she’s adamant that the “romance” with them be over at the end of b4.

Interestingly, since this is a one-book thing, we’ll get to see what an actual full romance path looks like from her, at this point (I don’t count Lady’s Choice–I hate regency romances ) or her other one, because there was virtually no romance in that one. A full romance path means it can’t be dragged out forever, can’t be nothing but longing looks and the LI being a dipshit, and has to actually have a bond formed and, hopefully, agreed upon by both sides. I think she’ll love it since it will be nothing but pain, misery, and conflict.

As for the RO, the dude/chick already murdered Ostin. I’m hoping for a high body count. If the MC can bemoan randos getting kidnapped and go catatonic from it, imagine what they’l be forced to behave like if some people get killed (supernaturals, apparently, since no one gave a damn about the kid who was killed in b1).

Hawkins is awesome. You have to play Mecha Ace.

Why doesn’t the MC recognize Ostin, then?

Maybe they actually treat the MC with some respect? And like they are powerful in their own right, without being a blood bag or needing to be protected?

Or… maybe they’re the bad kinda soulmates, destined to be together so there’s no resisting it.

There were a lot of people wanting a Murphy romance, too, I remember. So it’s not a surprise people would go for the villain, no matter how awful he might be. Hell, there are women who write love letters to imprisoned mass murderers. It’s a thing.

It’s why I like playing yandere games where the yandere will murder anyone for the MC, for looking at the MC, for breathing, or any other reason, but they won’t hurt the MC. It’s kinda fun playing that kind of romance… wouldn’t want it in real life, though, lol.

You do know that some people have this kind of preference in fiction for centuries? I wouldn’t be surprised if there are because they like those kinds of things. I don’t judge them if they prefer villians.

Edit 1: @EvilChani True. Some just enjoy the thrill of romancing someone forbidden in fiction.

100% That’s a bit concerning though…

Try marrying one! I remember a girl here doing the thing with Pichushkin, one of our serial killers.

But serial killer lacks the charm and drive other types of evil have. It’s just… wow, do you want a fucking medal or something, you don’t even do that in a mech. It’s our world type of violence, the familiar and boring. I believe that a villain RO should be anything but boring. You have to play through three books for them alone, they have to be worth it!

Ugh. I hope they’ll become our ally in an investigation, playing both sides to come on top. In the process they understand that the Detective sure is skilled, sure is competent and sure makes their blood boil in a most exciting manner. Mutual respect, something gentlemanly.

I mean, if you just want the villain romance you just have to play B4.

I think that’s the author’s writing.

They’re not going to “spoil” you about the reason MC is out there, or who is the dead one. At the end of the demo, we assume Ostin somehow died during the ritual.

@EvilChani, @resuri08 I understand the thrill of romancing someone who is forbidden or somewhat a villain.

However, if you stil want to romance them even after they kill innocent people or commit to horrendous and pure evil actions, something is wrong with you. I mean, what’s the thing you like about them??

Oh please don’t. Fiction is a safe space for executing fantasies and it has nothing to do with ones moral standing or opinions. There’s plenty of games here where you play the villain and can kill innocents, doesn’t make everyone playing them a psychopath. People are plenty capable of distinguishing fiction and reality, you’re preaching the old “videogames cause violence” rhetoric.

If fictional atrocities are a hard no for your fictional romances, it’s perfectly fine and valid, we all have our boundaries, but don’t get on a high horse and judge others.

I don't remember how or why I came to these conclusions but I'm not gonna reread B3 for this.

After B3 I kinda thought she was Rook’s sister that didn’t die but turned supernatural (a vampire, maybe). Whether she became a Rogue because of Rook’s death or Rook died trying to bring her “back to the light” is up for debate.

Also Rebecca 100% knows everything but wouldn’t tell us because it’s not immediately relevant.

mysterious identity

I thought she wasn’t related to MC. Just this mysterious assassin who always gets results and always finds her mark. I don’t even remember if MC had an aunt - Rebecca didn’t really mention a sister or something in published books.

Maybe she’s our clone…?

She’d be the MC paternal aunt: ROOK’s sister, not Rebecca’s. Falk says she has eyes like the MC’s, and MC’s eyes are said to be the same as Rook’s.

Presumably more than “something about the eyes” about the MC would remind Falk of her then.

Additionally, when she actually shows up she has a chess piece next to her, which is why I’ve taken to calling her Knight (because that’s the chess piece), which combos with Rook.

Rebecca said it was Rook’s sister that called him Rook. After her “death” he asked everyone to call him that instead of his given name.

Not sure if any of this is considered a spoiler so hiding for my own anxiety lol

I’ve always just assumed the rogue leader was MC’s aunt due to the mention of her and her “death” shortly before the leader appeared, her eyes being similar to MC (who Rebecca says has Rooks eyes), and her being at Rook’s grave with an actual rook piece after we hear the aunt was the one who gave Rook his nickname.

I’ve wondered if the aunt had the mutation too, if something happened to her, willingly or unwillingly, that turned her into a supernatural, and a pretty powerful one to be leading the rogues. Maybe that’s how Rook found out about supernaturals, and became liaison to the agency, because they caused the “death” of his beloved sister.
Whether he and Rebecca knew the aunt was alive or believed she was really dead, I do not know, I have ideas on both options.
I wouldn’t put it past Rebecca to be hiding that bombshell.

If I remember correctly at the end of the last book, the aunt wanted MC alive, so maybe she has plans to turn MC to her side, to use their mutation for some plan or to get a wee protégé of her own.
Maybe she wants revenge on Rebecca and the agency for turning her brother against her and plans to use MC to get it. Maybe Rook had the mutation too and the limited details of his death by rogues are due to it being a failed experiment to make him a supernatural.

So many theories lol

Our abilities have already started mutating, so that’s another piece. Maybe leader has also experienced some sort of power trigger that caused the powers to start getting stronger and mutate in new and exciting ways? Could it have been Murphy? It probably was Agency, though, but could he really have done that too?

Could be it was an accident and Murphy heard about it, put the pieces together and tried to replicate it and sought out anyone with the mutation to use as guinea pigs.

No. Sera has said the MC is the only one that ever had the mutation.

Not exactly. They’re just the last known person alive with the mutation - as Murphy killed all the others in their pursuit of figuring out how it works.

Sorry, I meant that Rook never had the mutation, my bad. Brain farted a bit there.

I’m going to go with “very unlikely”, because if she did not!Murphy would have been all over that shit instead of going “oh no, I killed the last test subject” before finding out about the MC.

Interesting. It does make you wonder if she chose her words carefully to avoid any potential spoilers. If she only mentioned Rook then it is possible that the aunt had it, or another mutation/power.

I’m a sucker for theorising between lines, even if there isn’t anything to it in the end
