The Wayhaven Chronicles: Book One (WIP)

Thanks for the feedback on the perspective shifts everyone!

I am a bit worried that anything major I do to show the shift will break immersion, as @Eiwynn said. But, also @idonotlikeusernames has a good point about showing it a bit more, to really let people know about the change.

After reading what @Bootsykk and @thatdodgymoggie said, about not reading the buttons (which is something I do to! :D), I think for now what I might try and do is, instead of having the ‘Meanwhile…’ text in the button, I’m going to put it at the top of the scene. Hopefully, then no one will miss it, and it will be obvious enough without being too blunt in the middle of text.

My (hopeful) plan is to update this every month- it won’t always be a full chapter, sometimes just spelling edits, stats, or stuff based on feedback etc, but until the demo is completed I will try to update this regularly.

Currently I am working on editing Chapter 3, trying to get it up together and ready to put out, which should be some time next week. It’s the proper introduction between the romance interests and the MC, so I hope people will enjoy it!

Still fiddling around with stats. A lot of Book 1 is going to be building up your MC, so every choice- dialogue and otherwise- adds to the stats, so I want to make sure I have a good range. Thinking I might keep some hidden though!

Thank you for everyone’s interest in this! It’s so cool to read about the discussions about people’s choices, or which romance options are catching people’s fancy so far

Another option is to have a one word(sentence) page with an illustration indicating the shift.

Insert an illustration of our “Mother”( or of the “team” gathered around the desk… or whatever) and have Meanwhile … on a unique page.

This is taking a page from your published works and incorporating an idea not usually used here but one that might be well received and adopted.

Full disclosure: I often neglect to read the buttons as well, as usually they just tend to say “next” anyway.

@Eiwynn - That’s a good point! Would make for something a bit different. Not sure about the amount of work involved though, definitely something to think of!

@idonotlikeusernames - Yeah, I know, right? I do it all the time, so I should have thought about the fact people might not do it for mine!

So, I’ve added Chapter 3 to the demo.- Updated link is in the original post. I hope it goes all right! I tried to bug test it as much as possible, but there are quite a few choices and variables, so probably didn’t get them all… Hope you enjoy it!

Stats have changed a lot, but I’m still not sure I’m happy with them. So they are not finalised, might take some out, add different etc…

Caught a tiny error here: “I just mean it would give us a chance to acquaint ourselves with the area a little more.” £!{n_she} pauses. "

Here is the wiki link to the relevant info:

The Image command in-depth

It was said elsewhere that the .png file-type is best used and it was also said elsewhere that the image itself should be resized correctly during publication no matter your original.

For more in-depth help, I’d put a thread in the development sub-forum where @RETowers or other code-wizes can direct you better then I (who is code-stupid ;))

Alright, so, I played through chapter 3. I love the interaction with the agents so far. I didn’t expect Adam to be so stern! I’m sensing a rivalmance in my future. He’s already clashing with my sarcastic, confrontational Detective in the best way.

Felix is very… forward. In a good way. I mean, I expected the flirtiness, and I’m not exactly complaining

Nate is obviously a big sweetheart, but he seems sad. Let me cuddle you, Nate.

And Mason… MASONBOY

I have to say, I adore the in-depth descriptions. I really got a good idea of their appearances. Usually characters are kind of a blur when I’m reading, but I can picture them clearly in my head.

A couple things I noticed:

1.) I grit my teeth at the repeated interruptions. "Well, I would like to go through all the facts before continuing, so as we’re all on the same page."

Shouldn’t ‘as’ be 'that’?

2.) “I’m not doubting your abilities, Detective,” he replies, his eyes flickering wider in apology. “I just mean it would give us a chance to acquaint ourselves with the area a little more.” £!{n_she} pauses, leaning away from Felix and lowering his voice. “…And a chance to speak with my team about how to best work with others.”

I selected the option “I’m perfectly capable of going by myself” when Nate suggested checking out the warehouse, and this happened. (But I see @idonotlikeusernames beat me to the punch!)

I’m going to play through again and do some things differently. I really liked this chapter. I was a little disappointed that Adam and I didn’t get to spend some quality time together :smirk: but I know there will be plenty of opportunites for that!

Oh! Quick afterthought: I liked how you can decide your relationship with your mother. I hugged her when she showed up, but next time I’m going to have our relationship a bit more strained. It just does so much for character building.

P.S. Sorry if this post is a mess, I am really tired and lacking caffeine. And I’m on mobile. It doesn’t make a very good combo.

Yeah, Adam is cute and the most handsome of the bunch, but also the one who clashes with my sarcastic detective the most too (then again my mc did shoot the guy) so definite rivalmance. :yum:

oh Morgon why do you hate me so~ :sob:
I have a thing for relationships that start out rocky for some reason.

Found a misgendered bit:

Heh, yeah, there’s also that (although it’s worth noting he reacts to you the same way if you don’t shoot him). That’s definitely going to be a sore point between us. However, Detective Nina Kyle regrets nothing! Take that you egotistical jerk! (And by that I mean I love you, Adam )

Yep, though for someone that cute he could definitely dress better/more exiting, we’ll have to see if we can fix that at some point. Sadly not much call for a costumed ball in Wayhaven though.

I don’t, know, it makes sense to me that he’s not as ‘fashionable’ as the rest of the team. He seems very serious and practical, not the type of person to really care how stylish his clothes are. Although, the idea of a ball or some black-tie affair is very enticing. I mean, I’m sure the mayor knows how to throw a good party. Just picture it: Adam, in a tux. /swoons

@idonotlikeusernames - Thank you for catching that! Updated it  Also, in regards to the not having much reason for a ball in Wayhaven… just wait for one of the future books, hehe

@Eiwynn - Thank you so much for that! Didn’t realise you could do so much with coding in this

@ladyfire - Thank you for catching those errors, managed to update them! I was worried the character descriptions would be too much, so I’m glad you liked them  Mason/Morgan is… yeah, a toughie, but I’m excited where their path is gonna go (even more so when romance is involved!).
The romance with Adam/Ava is quite the interesting and bumpy road! Clashing is certainly something that may happen often. The MC definitely will get more time with Adam/Ava, don’t worry

@BoisterousBumblebee - If you like rocky starting relationships, then you’ll love Morgan/Mason! (Thank you for catching that, managed to edit it in!)

Adam/Ava doesn’t react to you differently about the shooting… yet. It’s definitely a point that will come up- as if Felix/Farah is gonna let that drop  Just probably not when they’re trying to keep low-profile.

And, just to forewarn people about future romances- the love triangle is between Adam/Ava and Nate/Nat.

If it’s ok to ask- how did people like the options with the flirting so far? Obviously Felix/Farah flirting is bold, but I wanted the romances to feel more of a natural build-up, which is why I had options for holding gazes, rather than open flirting.

My hope is to add 2 different ways of flirting/building romance- bold and subtle. Eg- Openly flirt or just smile and flutter lashes, kind of thing  Obviously, better than that!

Not so much if you’re male, unfortunately someone somewhere decided we must dress-up like penguins. Personally I think having to wear a tuxedo is more of a punishment then a celebration.

You can wear a serious and (somewhat) practical “uniform” and still be quite fashionable, even the US of A knew how to do it, once upon a time.

Incidentally I’d rather get Adam in that than a boring old Tux, if we get to take him somewhere fancy.

To be clear: the end of the demo is the reveal of who the group of vampires need to protect, right? (I expected it to be longer–not that I’m complaining; I’m just trying to make sure that there’s not some problem preventing me from playing it any further).

Spoilers!?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Haha, yeah, I’m really looking forward to this moment, to be honest. Hilarity is bound to ensue.

I knew it! I totally guessed it! This is going to be so angsty, I can tell. Bring it on!

I like how it’s handled so far. It feels very natural to me. I like that you can be just as flirty with Felix/Farrah, or kind of shy and easily flustered, or even totally not having it. Holding their gaze is a good way to handle the other romances, imo, since not everyone is receptive to shameless flirting (full disclosure: I am not one of those people who has a problem with shameless flirting).

Fair enough. So maybe not black-tie. But a formal event could be very fun, and there are plenty of styles and colors for suits that keep things interesting.

Hi Seraphinite, could you add the optoin to save/load to the demo :)?

@sammyboy - The end of the demo is actually longer than that, not sure why it isn’t showing for you  I just checked out the link I posted, and it is going to Chapter 3. Is it working for you yet? I’m really sorry about that! (There shouldn’t be anything preventing from going further).

@ladyfire - I’m glad the flirting is good. It’s a new way for me to try, so it’s nice to know I’m heading in the right direction!

@mangopeerat - I will give it my best  I can’t promise anything, because I am not great at coding! But, it’s definitely something I will try to see if I can add in the next update.

Really like it so far. Love standing up to Ava and Morgan. Farrah is as blunt as a hammer. Nat is great. Glad there is one person who takes who the detective is seriously.
