The Wayhaven Chronicles: Book One (WIP)

It is one of the worst things to kiss a smoker right after she smoked. The taste is terrible.

Indeed, I myself like this type. Ava/Adam in fact reminds me of Cassandra from Dragon Age, a character that I like a lot. I don’t see that much appeal on Ava/Adam though and I just got surprised to see the majority is going for her/him. For some reason I was expecting to see Felix/Farah or Nat/Nate on the top of the poll lol

Readers love their Ice Queens/Kings

I’m torn between Adam and Nate. They’re bith really appealing for vompletely opposite reasons. On one hand there’s Nate who’s that super nice and considerate type who seems to have my MC’s best interests in mind while not dismissing him. I always like going for those types for the fluff moments . Then there’s Adam who despite being a stubborn, over bearing, pig headed person actually does care and just ignores it/won’t admit it, basically a total tsun . He kinda reminds me of a prickly cactus, a little pokey on the outside but with a good inside. I’ll romance Felix at some point but for now he’s my easy going banter buddy :relaxed:. And the same for Mason i guess (?) i just don’t get him .

I still think that A meant well but just don’t know how to show it. N and F are okay for me but they feel more like bros. Most people like the challenge with A’s personality but each people have different taste so it’s quite hard explain.

You and me both. My MC just want to befriend M but I don’t really know how.

Guilty! haha. I like Adam and Mason actually. Adam is cute in the way that he seems to have a soft side, but he is just awkward about expressing it. Mason is a challenge and I love that silent, dominating presence. We would have to see more of the story, but I guess in order to get Mason maybe your MC needs to be tough enough to withstand all the insults, and slowly crack that shell open.

I like how you can also choose to act shy, or forward, and that they illicit slightly different responses.

Come to think of it, Mason seems to be more like the Ice King of the bunch rather than Adam.

Hence why i called Adam a prickly cactus :cactus::joy:.

Prickly cactus… that would be a good description for him. :joy:

Goodness, I expected Adam/Ava to take first place, but they are certainly dominating the polls! People love their Ice Kings/Queens! Though I feel their position as the leader of the group gives an impression that their romance would be the “canon” romance, if this was a novel.

Nate/Nat is comfortably at second place, but there is certainly quite a distance between first place and second place.

I was expecting Felix/Farah to be a shoe-in for 3rd place, but Mason/Morgan certainly is tight competition! Interesting to note both have opposite personalities

Let’s do another poll since I am in a poll-making mood . @Seraphinite has blessed us with the ability to choose between two different flirt options to approach our favorite vampires! Which type of flirting do you prefer for your MC?

  • Shy/Subtle
  • Bold!

I play my MCs as a scientific investigator with less than ideal people skills, so the subtle flirt options are fantastic for them!

I have to admit, I didn’t like Ava at first, so I enjoyed the opportunity to give as good as I got in our arguments. But she’s grown on me since. There’s a conflicted side to her that makes her tendancy to lash out more understandable, if no less frustrating to deal with. I guess, between her and Wakefield (who I found equally infuriating at first), I enjoy tsundere ROs after a bit of an acclimatisation period.

So I just played this one for the first time thinking I was getting into a supernatural thriller/mystery. Once I realized I was in a vampire romance my honest response was “oh hell, seriously?” However I’m a bit ocd about finishing games I start and ended up glad I did just for the sake of the character development.

My detective is smart confident and went at Ava every chance he had while growing close to Nat. But as time went on the heat with Ava got warmer while he’s starting to feel manipulated by Nat. I can see a lovely triangle forming already. Not sure which way learning the truth will push him.

In short congratulations on making me actually enjoy a vampire romance for the first time since twilight ruined vampires.

Very few people can resist tsunderes, it seems . Though I think it also helps that we get a peek into Ava/Adam’s thoughts at certain points and it shows that they’re not as egotistical as their first impression makes them seem, and that they’re at least partially willing to (privately) admit when they go too far and show awareness when they are in the wrong and that the MC wasn’t the cause of some problems. I can imagine from Adam/Ava’s thoughts alone that they’re going to, being the type to show anger when really worried about a MC they are close to.

I find it funny to see a good deal have chosen subtle/shy. But then again, it’s nice to enjoy being pursued rather than always having to do the pursuing, especially when it feels more in character for some MCs to let another take the lead certain time or be shy at certain moments with certain characters. Don’t get me wrong, it’s fun to catch some characters off guard or possibly make them flustered a bit, but it also feels interesting to see how a RO goes about their own courting when they’re interested enough in the MC. I noticed that most video games do tend to go the route of having the MC being the initiator, which can feel a little much at times.

Like, I could see Lupin being more likely to flirt openly with Nat while they are alone together due to how comfortable and at ease he is around her, though his slowness to trust makes him more inclined to take a more subtle approach most of the time (just that being alone with Nat would boost his boldness at times). But in a situation with someone like Manson, who he spends most of his time being snarky with, sudden, unexpected close contact with him would easily get Lupin flustered. I like to think he freezes up partially since Manson is a bit taller than him and partially because he genuinely has no idea how to react to sudden contact with someone who he spends most of his time disagreeing with (though not in the same way confrontational way he does with Ava) and who isn’t a person he feels as close to as Nat and Felix.

@squarelyblue

You probably already figured this out by now, but I just realized that Lupin actually did get a few points in friendship and flirt with Manson/Morgan in my play-through. When I replayed, with the choices I made around him, it seems he responds to not backing down to him at certain moments and being snarky with him. That said, if you do end up acting shy/subtle in certain moments, it’s like some hunting instinct suddenly triggers in Manson/Morgan that causes them to pursue when Detective MC tries to shy away.

I’m more shameless than Farrah when it comes to flirting in real life so I always go for that type of personality if it’s available (+ sarcasm galore). I think the MC arguing with Ava/Adam all the while flirting shamelessly with them in the rare occasions they’re not is making for quite the interesting mix of a hot and cold relationship.

Ice Queens with warm hearts are the best

I always do the more subtle flirting, I’m used to being the one pursued (in RL I think I’ve only ever asked 1 or 2 girls out ) so I’m used to just stoking the flame rather then charging in.

For me, I had to ask the guys in EVERY relationship I had ._. I’m shy and not really love to pursue, but if it wasn’t me I think we wouldn’t get anywhere. Fortunatelly thet never seemed to be bothered by a “”“girl”"" asking them out.

But for girls… :disappointed: I’m much more shy with girls than with guys, so I never got that far ;w; didn’t pursue and wasn’t pursued.

I’m quite relieved to think I’ll be able to romance Nat even picking the subtle options

Here are my in-depth thoughts of the demo! They’re not organized in any particular order, but I hope they’re useful! (I played as a female MC with an all-female Unit Bravo)

Impressions of Unit Bravo:

Ava - I’ve seen people refer to this character as an Ice Queen/King; I actually disagree with it and here’s why. As the Unit’s leader, I would think that Ava would have been a vampire agent the longest out of the Unit and as such, maybe she’s had limited human contact with people outside the Agency. This is important to note because that means that she’s been working the field for so long that she’s maybe not adept in how different civilian life is.

I think the reason why the MCD and Ava clash is because they’re both people in positions of power in their respective field. Ava’s the Unit leader, while the MC has been promoted to being a Detective. They’re both experts in their field. The friction comes from the MC belief that the things that go bump in the night don’t exist and is treating this string of murders like a regular case. Ava, on the other hand, knows these things exist, and she knows how to effectively deal with them in order to limit human casualties.

Is she an Ice Queen? No; Ava cares for her team mates - she hears Nat’s side of the argument despite disagreeing with her, she cares for the Detective’s safety, she cares for the mission’s success, and she cares about humans despite not liking them. Is she a hard ass? Yes. But, she’s like that because she’s dealt with these things before and clearly, she’s come out on top. Ava knows what she’s doing works and she doesn’t want to fail the mission just because the Detective is ignorant of the risks. This is why when the MCD cooperates with her, Ava shows her softer side. When the Detective works with her, Ava subconsciously knows that that cooperation has just improved the chances of success.

Nat - The Lancer to Ava’s Leader; Nat is a good balance and Ava’s oldest friend. For starters, Nat is a nice person, a trait that is established early on when she introduces the team to the MCD. I would go so far as to say that Nat is the most human of the Unit: she encourages cooperation between the Unit and the Detective, we see her struggle with her vampirism, and she makes it a point of keying the Detective in on what they’re actually facing.

Despite all these niceties and humanity in Nat, you have to remember she’s an Agent. Her skill sets may lie elsewhere compared to Ava - who I am under the distinct impression that Ava was involved with MI-6 or the British army - but she’s faced down creatures of the night and survived. But… not entirely unscathed. Nat does struggle with her vampirism and her argument about letting the Detective in on their secret may have been from personal experience.

Farah - The least experienced and perhaps the youngest vampire of the Unit. I say ‘least experienced’ because of her interactions with the Detective while comforting Kate Hayes. Her comment about how the Detective makes it easy to get comfortable could be a throw-back to Farah’s possibly sudden change in lifestyle. She’s young enough to have not realized the isolation that comes with being a vampire and hasn’t had her ability to be empathetic to others, be smashed by harsh reality.

Morgan - Probably my favorite character out the Unit; Morgan is a complex character. Her personality is a combination of the characters Sten and Morrigan from DA: O; off-putting at first and a blue-and-orange morality, but I think it has something to do with how she was raised. Her comment about how lucky the witness of the first murder just because she had a roof over her head, implies that Morgan didn’t have a roof over her head when she grew up. What we do know, based on the POV switch during the patrol, is that curiosity isn’t a typical trait of hers - why is that? in fiction, an individual’s dampened curiosity is usually associated with jobs that people shouldn’t ask questions i.e. CIA, FBI, covert military operations - and that, if you picked the Shy Flirt option, she reciprocates because she’s interested in provoking a stronger reaction. Morgan is not a hero like Ava or Nat, she chooses to act out of her own interests, seemingly at the expense of others. I am eager to learn more about why she’s listed as the Specialist Agent, how that impacts the MCD and their resistance to a vampire’s pheromones, and what her motivations are.

Pronoun Shifts

Interviewing Mrs. Frida Huddlers w/ Nat & Morgan:

Shy Flirt Interaction w/ Morgan on Patrol:

Extra Tidbits!

How would the MCD know this? Media depiction?

The MCD has never had any military experience based on the given choices as to their motivation for why they joined the police, one of them being this: “With my family so against the army, the police were the next best thing.”

Nat vs. Technology

This was such a precious scene! Plus, great foreshadowing! If the MCD has to break into a building with lots of high-tech security, then Nat probably isn’t the best option.

Vampire Lore

So far we’ve seen vampire’s subdue their prey with the use of pheromones, vampires being vulnerable to bullets, vampire super speed and endurance, vampire enhanced senses, unaffected by sunlight, and individual differences i.e. being vulnerable to cold and being a walking lie detector. All in all, this game’s vampires seem like an ambush predator, or a lightning bruiser. Made for speed but as fragile as humans are. A very nice balance for this creature of the night.

I do want to learn the antagonist’s motivations and how obtaining the MCD’s blood would benefit them. Is it like a power boost when a vampire drinks their blood, or if they change the MCD into a vampire would that produce a “super” vampire?

All in all, a fantastic game! Keep up the great work and thank you for sharing it with us!

Another thing to note about M is how the Big Bad reacts to their pheromones. My money is on M being the actual oldest and or the “strongest” of the group.

For A’s route, my MC, even though confident with her work, will be more shy/subtle in terms of flirtation. I haven’t decided yet for M’s route but I probably still try the shy/subtle approach first.

As for N and F, the bold approach would be the one I’m picking. =)

For A’s route, I’m sticking with the shy/subtle approach. Not because my PC is the shy sort, but rather because those choices seem to better reflect uncertainly, which seems more appropriate, given that my PC and A spend half their time at each others throats. (A metaphor that runs the risk of becoming rather literal when one the the parties in question is a vampire.) As such I feel a measure of uncertainty makes sense for my PC given that A drives him up the wall most of the time, so adding attraction into the mix is just going to confuse the hell out of him.

The one I’m probably least likely to romance is F, but that’s not because I dislike them, rather I’m more interested in being snarky best buds with them.

Side note, I was listening to “He’s a a Demon, He’s a Devil, He’s a Doll” by Betty Hutton while reading this WIP and some of the lyrics become absolutely hilarious on A’s route. Why do I love a guy I ought to shoot indeed.
