The Wayhaven Chronicles: Book One (Discussion) FAQ Located on Post 2

Thank you, I am extremely fond and interested in other languages. The words do seem very alike, thus easily confused. Especially knowing that using the word ‘beautiful’ in different ways makes the spelling different as well.
In high school I had a Russian teacher for maths and science and she often tended to refer to us (the students) as her many, many children. Since then I always wanted to learn Russian, unfortunately, I find it an immensely difficult language.

And, with your permission, I would like to use this for a fanfiction?

Thats fine by me! I love talking about Russian and Russian stuff. Not many speakers of the language in the US. And some people even tend to think we’re some kind of hackers or spies . So it’s nice to meet people interested in the language. My sister and I would be glad to answer any questions you might have about it.

Hah, beware of what you are promising, for you two shall become my personal Russian dictionary.

Foolish joking aside, thank you, you two are very sweet. And I may actually need the help when I am writing the fanfic.

Thats ok. We like to help people. Especially if its for you guys on the forum. And Russian is a very difficult language. I get why it might be a bit daunting to try to learn .

I think English was a bit harder. It’s got words for everything. Then you have the whole there, their, and they’re thing. All these homophones and onomatopoeias. Its exhausting. I thought learning Serbian was hard!

Just want to remind everyone to not go off-topic.

@Aleksa100 it can be, for a topic this large—it’s difficult enough as it is to break into it.

but, @resuri08 i think if we relate this discussion of language to N, and their own love of languages…

so how’s about this: given everyone’s experiences with different languages, what would you guys say would be the more difficult languages for N to have learned? (canonically N knows dozens, just fyi)

I wouldn’t mind if it is related to TWC. I just don’t want too much derailing that the on topic discussion get lost in between.

Sorry about that…Sooo do you guys think F can read Echolian? I know Sera said most people can’t but I don’t remember them saying that F couldn’t. Can you imagine them trying to teach people how to read?

Probably a lot of the “dead” languages. Latin might not be to bad but learning Babylonian or something like that would be a problem. Perhaps Egyptian hieroglyphics? Old Slavic is also a real b*tch. Pardon my French. Then again some of the “dead” languages might not have been dead when they were around.

It’s okay. I am sorry if I am a bit petty but it kind of hard to redirect a thread once it got too off topic based from my previous experience. Anyway, I would love my MCs to learn Echolian if possible. It looks interesting!

Edit: To add: In terms of languages, I am looking forward to read Adam speaking French.

I completely understand. And I don’t think its petty at all. I could ramble on for hours if my wife or sister didn’t put a stop to it . I hope but also worry about learning Echolian from F. I feel like they would tell us that something inappropriate in Echolian means “Hello” or something and we wind up getting slapped by some Fae or something. Now I’m wondering if N knows Echolian. With her love of languages and all.

hey, that’s something I’ve never considered before!!

I wonder if it’s something Sera would even be able to confirm without spoilers?

English is easier than other languages imo

I think English is the easiest foreign language to learn. I have taken Latin, English, Italian and German classes in school. My friend in another school took French, Turkish and English (the languages you take depend on the school you go to)
English has no gender and all the verbs are the same (except the he/she/it one but uou get it) not to mention it doesn’t have many verb tenses.
I’m not saying English is easy, but it is easier than other languages. (The ones that i know at least)

The hardest language to be learned by vampires…i’d say the hardest part would not be learning the language, but keeping up with it. Imagine one of UB wasting a lot of time learning English ages ago then going to Russia for example and learn Russian, have fun for a century or so and then go back to England to see that the language changed entirely and they have to re-learn it all…

I suppose it would be bad for their cover if they were using slang from two centuries prior in public. But I’m not sure that languages change too much that they couldn’t adapt relatively quickly. I think learning a language that no longer has any speakers like ancient Babylonian or Old Slavic (ugh) would be a real challenge. I’m confident they could learn it though.

Just hope that they give you the correct translations. I’d hate to make enemies out of most of the agents because F thought telling us a swear word meant “Hi” or something would be funny.

i honestly would find it funny if they did have a hard time becoming up to date lol XD just imagine calling them old timers for using ancient slang lol.

I could totally see F doing that tho XDDD M would probably snicker, N would politely and gently correct us while A would just shake his head in disgust… lol

I’d honestly find it kind of adorable. There’s something endearing about people using out of date terms in an innocent way.

Bad news is I think N might be the only one besides F who knows Echolian. Good news is they would be the most likely to tell us and correct us nicely if we made a mistake.

What if F does not know Echolian? Because if very few people know it, means you have to be pretty studious to be one of them and F is anything but studious…

Plus Sera is not going to come up with a new language herself so i don’t think they’ll mention it much.
