The Wayhaven Chronicles: Book One (Discussion) FAQ Located on Post 2

I try out different routes, but that choice is always satisfying in a weird way. All you really do is ruin their shirt and give them a sore shoulder for a bit. Also spite. Also A is really mean. “At least you can finally be useful”—really?

It made me so mad when A said that!

Excuse you, A, but WHO was the one who found the murderer and his identity?! That’s right it was the MC!

MC: Excuse me, but who is the one who found Murphy?
A: By stumbling right into his clutches!
MC: …Um, yeah, but I found 'em!
A: [breaks more furniture???]

(All I’m trying to say is that A cares…just not about your furniture.)

A does care (which is super sweet and I love them) but it frustrates me how high and mighty they are about the MC being useless and throwing themselves into danger when the MC didn’t have all the information and had no reason to think they were in danger at all. I mean, okay, maybe patrolling at night alone wasn’t safe with a murderer but they were a cop who did that all the time. Going to a hospital alone to ask for test results wouldn’t be dangerous in any other situation and if Murphy had decided to, idk, work for Dr Turner instead then the MC would’ve been fine!

The MC did nothing wrong, darn it!

Yeah, I gotta be honest. A is probably my least favorite of the vampires. I just can’t get over that terrible first impression. I know they act differently later on and I know they have their reasons for acting the way they do and saying the things they say but… my MC doesn’t.

All she knows is this guy comes marching over, tries to take over HER case and treats her in the most condescending, arrogant way imaginable. If that happened to me, I wouldn’t care about your reasons, I wouldn’t care to listen to your sob story - I would hate your guts. To the grave, I’m that petty.

So I had a really tough time coming up with an MC that could put up with all that to try A’s route. And I couldn’t really identify with her. I guess A’s personality just isn’t compatible with me.

That said, like all characters in Wayhaven, A is really well written and I can’t lie and say I didn’t have a hell of a time making my MC butt heads with them. Their rivalry at the beginning of the game is amazing - I hope we can keep the slight antagonist vibe throughout the series. It adds an interesting dynamic.

Yeah, I don’t really like A either. I have actually played everyone’s route except his. Thinking it might be fun with a forward, flirty detective just to see what he does.

I normally like to play shy/easily flustered MCs, but with Adam, I found that I really like the bolder choices more. It keeps him more on his toes, and I feel like the MC has a more equal footing with him because they assert themselves more, which challenges Adam.

There’s a term for this. XD It’s called “science fantasy”, and a lot of things that people like to call “science fiction” actually fall under this header because science calls bullshit.

I agree with this categorization.

Much as I love scifi to death (and I do), scifi is heavily dependent upon science, and much as I enjoy a good science fantasy (and again, I really do), science fantasy is characterized by the fact that it blends elements of both science fiction and fantasy pretty heavily, to the point where it smacks of scifi but is not actually based on, rooted in, or realistically connected to any solid science (see: Star Wars).

Science fiction is defined as “fiction dealing principally with the impact of actual or imagined science on society or individuals or having a scientific factor as an essential orienting component.” [citation] So, your definition is fair-ish. The only problem is that it doesn’t address the ambiguous area that science fantasy occupies, and that’s easily resolved by just adding a clarifying point about science fantasy.

I HAVE THOUGHTS ON THIS SUBJECT!

As far as Wayhaven goes, I have to agree with “urban fantasy”, in part because I seem to recall Seraphinite saying something about the agency not being able to explain everything scientifically, despite their best efforts. (And I do not tumblr, so I probably can’t find the link, now, but I’ll look in a bit. It’s also possible it was in one of the Wayhaven threads, so, you know, maybe not even there to find.) Since it’s in a … well, a rural/suburban setting, but close enough, I guess? And it’s definitely got a lot of fantasy elements and no strong indicators that it’s heavily rooted in science, while there may be scientific elements to it, I would say that I personally cannot consider it science fiction, so I would have to solidly lump it under urban fantasy/urban fantasy romance.

My trigger happy MC was actually excited when A didn’t believe him and was like

I shot A once to see what would happen but generally don’t like doing it, dfghjk I admit it was worth F’s reaction to it but I’m just too kind to inflict that kind of pain and feel good about it even if he can heal quickly XD

Also A is my favourtive of the bunch so that also may be way I don’t like shooting him lmao

Soo my two cents on the Adam thingy. I love them but they press my buttons too. Which brings up the funny fact, M might be an jerk BUT they are an equal opportunity jerk. Also M might be mean and prickly but they never try to constantly remind the MC they are just a puppy nipping at a bear,s ankle. They do it like once and let that go. (Heck they are even mildly impressed that MC escapes Murphy)

Though Adam. They care in their own grumpy way. They worry and obviously worry makes them anxious and anxious goes to frustration. Though, though I see half the reason they are so mean about the MC comptence. it seems in the reveal that they are defensive. Biting at the MC before they can snap at them. I think a human of 12 must have been horrible to them or the team and they go on the defensive before they can get their feelings hurt. Hurt someone before they can hurt them. but that’s just my theory. XD

Never writing a post this long on my cell ever again. XP

Shooting A?! Hell yea!! I’ll get out of character at every opportunity just to shoot A. I don’t care if MC is a pacifist who wouldn’t hurt a fly; they will shoot A at every given opportunity. Because shooting A is just that satisfying :D.

Making a MC for Adam is quite easy for my part. Like @spunkycatninja said, someone who could handle Adam’s big personality would go well with him: Rational but no push over. To be fair though, Adam did push my buttons at first but I really love those rivals turn into friends into lovers tropes. =P

Which reminds me that Adam is like Mr. Darcy so making your MC somewhat like Elizabeth Bennet would flow well but hey, UB could fall in love with your MC whatever personality they are.

I’ve never had A phase me in the least. Maybe that’s because I am, and have grown up around, “big” personalities that want to take charge. So now when I encounter them in my adult years, it just feels like old hat to let their alpha-ness to leave me unimpressed. Add the fact that this is a game, A doesn’t bother me in the least. In fact, the tsundere story beomes interesting as the tale goes on.

ANGST DU MORTAIN LIIIIIIIVES

For those who don’t want to click the link, the nicknames are as follows:

A- Angst du Mortain
N- Nanny Suavewell
F- Frisky D’awville
M- Missanthropy/Misteranthropy

And their reactions according Sera:

A would roll their eyes and try to ignore it (whilst F rolled on the floor laughing in the background, praising the MC for thinking of it).

N would probably be quite complimented and willing to live up to the nickname.

F would definitely be happy with it and insist on being called it all the time by the MC and the team…which most of the team wouldn’t, lol.

M would probably arch a brow in agreement, but highly warn against actually using it in their vicinity

For even M to react positively…good gosh.

We did good everyone. I’m proud of us, lol.

I’m still dying at Angst du Mortain.

It’s such a perfect nickname. :joy: Bless whoever came up with it.

am i the only one wondering why M doesn’t have/use a surname? i mean, they were human once so they gotta have a surname, right? heck, even F who’s a natural vampire has one.

do you think something bad happened to them in the past that made them not want to use their surname? or what if they were an orphan who was given to or found by the Agency or Rebecca?

Everyone of us is wondering about it since Sera did say it has something to do with their background stories. Looking forward to discovering that. XD

Actually, @Celtic_Rune touched on this a while back with their super-mega amazing M Is An Agency Experiment theory.

the surname bit (spoilers!)

Frankly, there’s just not enough information for any of the vampire’s backstories (let alone M) to make too deep theories.

For all we know, M’s lack of a surname could from:

  • the Agency didn’t let them keep their surname??? (for whatever reason)
  • maybe M was experimented on by someone else (perhaps another rogue supernatural in the vein of Murphy) and they’re the one that robbed M of their surname?
  • maybe they’re like Wolverine and the experiments left their memory messed up (??? I willfully admit that I am reaching with this one, lol)
  • maybe they just don’t like it
  • maybe they just never had one to begin with–surnames are a product of centralization and industrialization. It’s not difficult to believe that M could’ve come from a pre-industrial village somewhere and just…never needed one??

Frankly, I’m more interested on why F has a French-af surname and an American accent.

What kinda wine-lovin’, croissant-eating, American accent-having vampires do they have in the Echo World? lol
