the MC's dad

I’m with ya. Whoever the MC’s dad is, he’s definitely not in the picture, whether by choice or force.
I’m inclined to believe he’s dead just because…it’s kinda easy to explain, you know?

I mean, potential reason for his death could vary wildly, but for the most part no one would question whether or not he’d return because…yeah, no. He dead.

If he did have the same mutation…I would prefer if Murphy had killed him because yeah, it just makes for so much more delicious angst, and while Rebecca has more than enough reason not to want her child to be killed by the same monster, have her husband killed for the same reason just gives us that extra layer of pathos that makes drama so very delicious.

However, if he did have the mutation…then I’d question why Sera didn’t just mention that to begin with in Book One? If she didn’t want us theorizing, then surely she would have nipped at the bud any sense of mystery the missing father creates.

Personally, I think something else happened to the father.

I think he's stuck in the Echo World.

"Most supernaturals aren’t from our world, but they manage to find their way here through cracks between dimensions. And once they’re here, they can’t get back.

What if the one-way trip…goes both ways, so to speak.
A supernatural creature from the Echo World cannot return to the Echo World through whatever mechanism delivered them from Earth, but what about an Earthling entering the Echo World?

Sera has stated multiple times that the MC’s father won’t have an impact…and this would go a long way to explaining that. There’s simply no way for him to come back. He’s as good as dead with the technology or magic they have at their disposal.

CRACK TERRITORY

#“Wow, I can’t believe there’s another dimension out there!”

I yank my fingers back from my mug, having been so enthralled by what I’ve been told that the heat has scorched them. “I can’t believe there’s another dimension out there!”

“We believe there are many. But thankfully, only one links to our world,” she replies.

BUT WHAT IF ANOTHER ONE LINKS TO EARTH AND/OR THE ECHO WORLD? WHAT IF MULTIPLE ONES LINK AND WE JUST DON’T KNOW???

What if Pop-Pop takes a roundabout journey through other dimensions to get back to Earth???

I have nothing to back this up but my own desperate desire for dad jokes.

the supernatural gang theory

You’re right, this one is rather reasonable, the only off-thing is that Murphy seems rather…disinclined to working in groups.
Or at least what we’re shown of him makes him seen rather self-centered (to say the least).

Though if Murphy was part of one, perhaps he split off a long time ago when he discovered the mutated blood? I can imagine he’d rather hoard this discovery to himself, even if he was on good terms with the others in the gang, so maybe the discovery of the mutation is what drove him away and he’s actually rather good about working in groups, but never mind, that’s beside the point.

Essentially, I think your theory has merit.

But regarding N’s involvement in one…I don’t find that unreasonable either.

Rebecca doesn’t give us a timeline about when the Agency first came together. For some reason, my gut says it wasn’t until the 20th century that the Agency formed, quite like in Men In Black.

Although I think I have a bias for that date because I’ve always imagined a sort of underground, black-market network of unaffiliated supernaturals who want nothing to do with the Agency or who are too dangerous for the Agency to let run loose (but they still desire their freedom) (if anyone’s ever seen Hellboy II, then you kinda have an idea of what I’m picturing) and if the Agency wasn’t created until rather recently (perhaps even as recently as a human entering the Echo World???) then I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that A and N ran in very…questionable circles back in the day.

But basically, if N ever did some weird or worrisome shit, I’d also include A just because of how old they are.

Now that I think about it, was it ever confirmed the MC grew up without their father? For some reason, I’ve always pictured Rebecca raising us as a single mother but I’m not sure where that idea came from.

Thing is, Sera said majority of the MC’s life rather than their entire life, so…it’s possible that the MC did have a father for quite a while, but we just have no way of knowing right now.

I can 100% get behind this!

But my crack loving side of my brain thinks it would be funny if after Murphy caught the MC he took a selfie with their unconscious body to send to his group to brag.

Well, there goes my theory… But now I’m interested in the nanny!

that nanny may not have been wholly human

Can you imagine someone assigning a demon to babysit a human baby? How pissed were they, I wonder.

Hmmm… you know what’s odd. How Rebecca never told UB about having a child… for 10 years…

Maybe because one of them was part of an evil cult?!

Oh my god you are never going to let that go xD

But it is rather suspicious…

MC: What about Unicorn?
M: No, they’re not real.
F: I wish Unicorns were real…

Another reason N is the best

It’s rather unfortunate, really. I would’ve loved to hear a story from the first time U!B heard Rebecca even had a kid.

F: So we’re in the arctic circle, right? M’s freezing their teeth off, A’s more up their ass than usual, N’s despairing at the plight of the polar bears, and my attempts to start a snowball fight are not going over well.

A, N, and M: [glaring daggers at F]

MC: [ignoring them] …go on.

F: Well, A’s trying to get a hold of Rebecca to double check the rendezvous point because there’s no one around for a few hundred clicks, but by the time A finally gets a hold of her, Rebecca’s in a total rush. A’s frantic, but Rebecca sounds crazy busy, and outta nowhere I have the brilliant idea of asking what’s going on on her end, and she says, and I swear A almost dropped the radio, “I’m late to my daughter’s ballet recital.” And that’s the story of how we learned you existed and also M got mauled by a bear.

MC: Wait what.

F: I know! Ballet? Jeez, can you get anymore cliché, Detective?

I feel bad for Sera, the unicorn scene was definitely not supposed to have this effect, but I also don’t want this to stop, lol.
