The Wayhaven Chronicles: Book One (Discussion) FAQ Located on Post 2

ok, back to this question because I was ruminating it all throughout my lunch.

It really depends on a variety of factors:

Like, were they were hospitalized because of Charlotte’s incredibly pungent cooking? If so, she’d respond by fussing over them, but also by refusing to cook anything with spices for about a month.

I’m sure A and M wouldn’t give af, but F and N—since they willingly eat—would probably have to beg her to use even salt again (although I’m certain the salt had nothing to do with it).

F: [trying to shake salt into the pan] Salt doesn’t even have an odor!
Charlotte: [using her entire weight to pull F’s arm back] I. can’t. risk. it!
F: [one shake]
Charlotte: [breaks into hysterics]

N: If you’d like to avoid cumin for a while, I understand, but please, please don’t be afraid of salt.
Charlotte: But—!!
N: Charlotte, please, for the love of god, use seasoning.
Charlotte: [with vigorously shaky hands] [adds one crystal of salt]
N: …
Charlotte: …did you want more?
N: [tries not to cry]
N: [cries a lot—but in the bathroom because they don’t wanna hurt Charlotte’s feelings because good lord was that chicken breast flavorless]

If, however, we’re going the heartbreaking route and the RO was in the hospital because of a direct consequence of Charlotte’s actions…then we get into the angsty territory, and tbh, that depends on even more factors.

Like, was the RO trying to protect Charlotte from a bad guy? Then Charlotte wouldn’t feel so guilty–though she would try and make them food or knit them some sort of gift to show that she appreciates what they did, maybe spruces up their hospital room with candles and flowers and cards.

If, however, they were hospitalized because Charlotte fucked up in some way…it’d be all of the above, but she wouldn’t even try to let it show that it was affecting her that badly and would refuse to cry in front of them and generally, would pour all her time into making her RO feel better, so that they don’t regret wanting to be with her.

For a less heartbreaking alternative, say the RO was hospitalized because Charlotte hit 'em with her car because she didn’t check her rear before hitting reverse?

(shit, would they even need to go to the hospital? fuck it, let’s say she was in a rush and gunned it, lol)

If that’s the case, she would spend the rest of the RO’s time in convalescence probably literally waiting on them hand and foot because of how guilty she felt—though I imagine F would take advantage of the situation—she’d probably keep doing it for at least two weeks after they were released because, “I RAN YOU OVER. :sob: LET ME MAKE THIS UP TO YOU.”
“It’s fine, I’m fine–”
“IT IS NOT FINE MY GUILT IS UNBEARABLE.”

And then three weeks later she probably runs over them again.

And that’s how Charlotte deals with guilt, by doing everything in her power to make the other person feel good until they forget they felt bad in the first place and then sometimes she makes the exact same mistake again.
