The Sword of Rhivenia (Remake) (DEMO UPDATED 23/02)

Witches and powers are a new addition to the game. They didn’t exist in the version that is in the play store.

It’s something to be explored later I suppose, not only Freya have such dream but MC as well. Not sure about the rest like Richard and Atheris

I’m wondering if the tree might be sending the dreams to them.

It’s possible although there is also more sinister alternatives like the dream always visit Rhivenian Heir.

I think refusing to fight and belittling him is the safest choice

Refusing the duel seem like it won’t sit well in Rhivenia, considering Richard have large fanbase this sound like giving him more ammo to do something worse down the line.

I think refusing would divide opinions. ‘he shouldn’t challenge his youngest sibling’ vs ‘the youngest sibling is a coward.’

Meanwhile in case of winning, you prove to everyone that you are the better fighter despite being younger.

No ‘benevolent prince’ would challenge his youngest sibling and no ‘great warrior’ would lose it.

If we lost on the other hand, Atheris is probably the winner, ‘he can only challenge the youngest sibling because he is too afraid to challenge Atheris’ and of course, challenging you in the first place means no ‘benevolent prince’

Given that MC is apparently guaranteed to get the sword’s approval it’ll put Richard’s action in different light – people won’t really care/remember that MC was younger sibling at that point, what will matter is whether Richard actually won.

So nice to have SOR back and kicking! Read the demo recently(don’t read this fat comment if you don’t want spoilers guys!) and really liked all the new bits of lore and worldbuilding we are getting like the world seems bigger and King Charles paying more attention to politics and how his kingdom will end up after his death. Loved how much it has been implied that being the “lastborn” has here all the negative connotations in public opinion-this we lacked in the original, cause people just being against the MC seemed plot convenience-as being a girl(heiress) in a medieval setting, who knows how this came to be? Catalina says firstborn children have always been favoured in Rhivenia so perhaps it is a historical remmant of how succession used to work for the Sylvanes before Namherys’ sword. Other families like the Everans seem to follow the firstborn inherits, so even if that doesn’t apply to the royals the stigma is still around, it has been said that lastborn heirs rarely gather support(only two lastborn became Rulers of Rhivenia) and that Prince Francis being so supported despite being one is considered strange by Rhivenians.Queen Isabelle’s outburst in her conversation with Richard when you are believed to be the better heir by King Charles says much of this, “He believes a lastborn can lead better than you!?” replace lastborn for woman in a classic medieval setting and you get the same feeling. A little surprised we got a puppy giving we will have a horse anyways but extra fluffy companions is something I won’t complain about!

It was actually explained how the mentors guide the Sylvane heirs came to be, having to do with the pirate incident and with the mentors including Sir Arnold being chosen directly by Charles(in the original I thought it was Alvena who was behind it). Clara became Gerard’s granddaughter instead of just her daughter and has an aura of tragedy she didn’t have in the og, probably has to do with her parents that she already told us are long dead, how long has she been living in the Royal castle I wonder? In Richard’s birthday he keeps repeating becoming 10 is important but is this actually a thing in Rhivenia society(say like the Japanese or with the quinceañera for latinos) or just being excited and feeling not a kid anymore? Catalina(great characterisation for her in the new demo, you can feel how much she dislikes war giving her stern tone towards the MC when they say are surprised that Freya doesn’t like fighting, the abolition of slavery by King Charles and how well she was treated by Alvena both explain her loyalty to the family, as always interesting woman) belongs to the “Southern people” is that a generic term for Pagonians? They share cultural elements with them as they “respect bastards” and are meritocratic(they treat well lower class individuals?). I disliked the scene between the MC and Queen Alvena was cut(in the old game we had this bonding scene between the two when the MC refuses to go to bed), or does it only only appear if you reject Richard as a brother in that early scene?Shouldn’t Catalina react to how Xavier is being treated? Given how malvourished she looks and she praises King Charles for ending slavery, doesn’t she she have nothing to tell about Xavier’s bad treatment? Or is the traitor card enough not to care.

I am curious about the Lutanian language and how it is widespread to the south of Rhivenia(so I guess Pagonia, Marania & co speak it), is this a nod to Latin? The language of a great civilisation that was left behind as a "prestige language after their fall? Really interesting how this was added to the remake.

Really liked how can you lie to people in this new demo save your mother(as a kid) cause that makes sense, hiding you helped the thief and revealing it to Freya felt great, how King Charles knew and threw it in your face was also good ground for an argument, in this remake we finally got the chance to speak with the absent father and bond with him he becoming fast my favourite character like he steals evey scene he is in! King Charles feels like a legendary actor and he said that Richard was a failure of a firstborn? That scene gave me the shivers, amazing content with him.

The new lore with the odd looking trees and the witches really added some mystery to the childhood scenes, those witches were ambitious perhaps they didn’t start any wars but they surely exploited the lands they then ruled by their puppets, I’m with Atherys there that they were not kind hearted “stopping all conflict?” haha more like a new geopolitical order, don’t like regular feudalism? Haha bow to your new magical tyrants(really that random witch going against her kind with such a morality was commendable even if her fate was the same as the others as far as we know)! I wonder if forging the odd looking tree in our sword when we are in Marania with Atherys will eventually reveal some of these dark mistresses to us? Recruiting a lady of all evil could really help us quite a bit in the wars to come if they are to be trusted of course, history says much about them to be honest.

In the scene with Queen Isabelle when you talk to her about the War of Three Brothers, she reveals Queen Alvena is still the second wife of the King and that her grudge is only about making her infertile not about the King taking Alvena as wife and you her sons half brothers coming to the world, it is an insightful scene and a good addition as the og game lacked interactions with Richard’s mother before the King’s death. She shows a warmth towards the MC that was not expected by me at all. I would like for Isabelle to comment in your looks if you choosed basically hers in char gen, in this scene perhaps she loses her herself for a moment touching your face telling something like perphaps in other life you would have been mine. Very ominous and cool that would be. “Charles saw something truly horrifying to have killed Francis” Is Aldreda a witch in this version of the tale?

Thanks Nutella for adding those extra scenes with Charles and Richard before arriving in the land of the Everans, masterful storytelling there really strong and necessary dialogue, a little more suspicious of the new bits we got about the Alvena-Isabelle relationship like they met in the gardens and were childhood friends? Did the King of Poleria send Isabelle to foster at the Rhivenia Court in order to marry whoever was chosen as King of Rhivenia(if so interesting to think about how Charles reacted when the King Harold-in the book 2 demo we had a guy named King Abbnan and it was to his daughter Edda we could marry Richard for an easy alliance- wanted a fairly similar deal with his own children save the fostering)? Did King Charles grow together with both his wives or Alvens and Isabelle’s families just were pretty close geographically so they met often? Why does it sound too much like the Rhaenyra-Alicent relationship in the house of the dragon show? The scene between Isabelle and Richard the one about Richard being skipped over in favour of the lastborn the MC also reminded me of the show, with the “You are the challenge Aegon, as long as you breath you are the challenge!” Isabelle knows that in a world where her rival’s children rule Rhivenia there might not be a place for her children or perhaps they will order Richard’s death as in her eyes Alvena is evil personified.

Finally knowing what was up with Poleria(old Polaris) was really needed, know we know they are an independent Kingdom that their symbol is the wolf and that Frostriver is their capital, King Charles might think that his alliance with them is pretty strong but once that mess with Matteo comes to light specially if we kill him then we will have to deal with angry Polerians trying to claim revenge for their prince, it was the right idea to make Isabelle and Matteo you know important characters in Poleria’s lore as if not Isabelle’s marriage did not at all made sense in the old version with a cold guy like Charles being difficult to believe he would persue a commoner(specially if we consider Aldreda’s business). It seems like King Poleria was cursed with foolish Matteo as his heir, the man might be going through a crisis trying to find an heir for Poleria if Matteo does a Blackfish and refuses marriage or is killed, perhaps turning to Richard if he is not chosen by the sword cause Dylvane prestige and Isabelle might be his favourite? Interesting Dynastic future we have going on there!

More new lore that was pretty on point was the expanded Rhivenia peasant reaction to Prince Francis’ death, this dreaded uprising obviously had Pagonia and Rhivenia nobles backing perphaps everyone being promised a different thing, the peasants more rights the Rhivenia nobles also more rights and the return of slavery?(King Charles did oppose it and outlawed it, did he when the rebellion happened though), the plan was probably to sit Aldreda and Francis’ unborn child in the throne pupeeting Rhivenia from there, if the nobles had armies still they would probably turn on the peasants after their victory or Pagonia would arrive revealing their plot and swap over what was left. Lots of intrigue on that one!

One last comment in the faiths of the setting, Namherys is still there and Ateshios the Pagonian god of fire is mentioned by Astryn’s father so their rivalry still stands but who are the gods that the siblings speak about when Gérard tells them about the witches? Older gods of nature long forgotten by the Rhivenians but still talked about? Eldritch abominations that yearn for their revenge using the witches as their tool or indifferent entities that feel betrayed by the humans that forgot about them turning to lesser beings? It also didn’t surprise me the Pagonian are still fanatics and that Astryn’s father is there fuelling the flames of war for the old hatred towards Rhivenia, Erwan is the “chosen of Ateshios” tasked to earn his revenge and put the followers of the Lord of the Sword to the torch. Believe me guys every time the game tells us about how good bastards and commoners have it in Pagonia I always mutter “Pagonian propaganda” and it would really make sense for it be so and it sounds too idillic and Catalina came from the South and was a slave so it makes you wonder what dark secrets are kept in the true Pagonian society?

Woah this is really verbose and currently the 2nd most recent comment

I’m no newbie to the series if that’s what you mean! Still keep all my old lore regarding nations and events from the original so connecting with the remake was easy stuff mate!

Quite possibly, also the most politically astute. Not that something like that actually matters to the Rhivenians. They’d be happier if MC had simply set him on fire and watched him burn.

Yeah I don’t mind agreeing even if I know I’ll lose cause either way he looks bad he wins he looks like an asshole I win he looks weak.

Would love it if the game reacted if you choosed certain names for your animal companions:Like naming the dog Charles or Richard or my favourite naming our horse after the Pagonian god of fire Ateshios. It is the ultimate mockery and I would love the game to recognise it!

Very Good

Not sure if it’s been brought up but I think there’s something wrong for the demo on mobile? At least for me. I tried on both safari and chrome but couldn’t move on to chapter 5

I could be wrong cause i havent played that far yet but that might be the current end of the demo?

Hi. I first want to say I was on the same mind that the game wasn’t near its full potential when It was released first, so I support this rewrite as I see It’s gotten better than first release. But I don’t know how this will be released as it had already has and its wholy new game with new story and prospects. I’m sure this is a new horizon for COG too and will set a new precedence in History, and will change lots of COG release laws.
But about demo… I have some concerns I want answers for. Don’t know if you answered them before!

  1. As you have removed almost all stats, how’s it going to check our leadership as I remember that was key stat for who get choosen by sword. I mean how’re you going to determine who will be choosen? Or in this new version it will be just Mc monarch path?
  2. How its going to check our knowledge or persuasion when they have been removed? I suggest keep this 3 stats(int, cha, lead) along the 3combat skill there are still used.
  3. What is the power section about? Are we going to have powers? How will we get those powers? What will they be? Why only Everans have powers? Is this all relevant to Wich stories?
  4. Am I correct to assume in this new game the main enemy is wiches who I’m sure are still there? And were they our ancestors? Because it sure feels like it.

And just wanna say I like that we have more depth in characters and stories like mother relations history. Like father more active role too, specifically when he calls us WORTHY in despite of not understanding what is worthy in this new version.

Yea you’re right. I didn’t read that the public demo is 4 chapters and the patreon version is 5 chapters. My bad.
