kill her or send her to brazil
Really enjoyed the gameplay but I have to agree that the stats except archery and knowledge didnt really make a difference, the ROs were rather flat (also: when MC is in love with Xaver, political marriage with Lena turned into a marriage with Xaver… my MC now suddendly doesnt loves Xaver anymore)
And tbh Rhivenia is going to have an enemy thats a lot worse than Erwan if they continue to treat my King MC like shit lol
Erwan arrives, whole lands is rather empty, sees King MC burning down a house off people who tried to kill him
Brazil is already bad enough, have mercy on the damned please!
Revna is pretty interesting, honestly I think she is the only RO i actually like lol
Honestly yeah that irks me a bit, why couldn’t we have a option to secretly love a RO when we are stuck in a political marriage? That could lead to interesting situations and “forbidden love” type of shit lol
I really love the game, but at some point it kinda frustrates me how mc is always being pushed around. Sigh I miss the unwanted warrior at least in that story mc could at least standup for themselves
This is a fair assessment; even for series I love like Malindren’s superhero game, I caution people against buying a game if it is going to be an obvious series, but ends on a cliffhanger. A person doesn’t know if it will be finished, hold up, etc. until all is out.
Not to mention there are some continuity/bug things, especially if the player isn’t the ruler still need fixed. I will be sending some stuff in a day or two.
I know I always loved: “What did the suspect die of?”
“Heart attack.”
“But there’s a dagger in the chest.”
“What part of heart attack didn’t you understand?”
I chalk it up to the fact Charles isn’t around. I mean, there was a period of 3 years between seeing kids. It is very easy for him to build up his favorite child in his mind, especially if the knight teaching him gives him glowing reports, etc.
And let’s be honest, it isn’t like Charles doesn’t have other concerns (impending invasion, feeling physically like shit, etc.) For me, Charles relationship is actually one thing I did find plausible.
I just got to say I did spit up my drink reading this I can already see the slogan “Putting the Royal in Battle Royale.”
daemir: he is very cruel and stoic and i like that lol
Xavier: honestly my favorite and I think his route with jarean is very good
jarean: it’s fun and always good to date a commoner in a royal game
Clara: Leaving aside the fact that she goes out with our brother, she is sweet to a certain extent, but there is not much romantic interaction.
revna: meh
Astryn: I would kill her, I mean I know she wants to help her friend but poisoning random people is unacceptable
Lena: I have high hopes for her for the second game.
We are two now. They are my favorites in history
Have yet to play a Daemir route. He’s a good friend though. And Xavi is a sweetie (in a fairly constant romance with him since the first meeting).
like i said why i want a father that i only see three times in all my life and 1 of that was when he was going to die? if richard was his favorite and only saw him for the first time at age of 7? 9? i dont remember, even if our mother would not have poisoned isabella i dont see how much better our relation with our father would be
I want to start off by saying congrats on the release! Avoiding this thread just to not spoil myself has finally paid off.
Funny enough, my last comment was about my thoughts on who poisoned King Dick-is-my-fav-son-even-though-all-he-does-is-simp-over-generic-stable-girl-#2000. It was really Matteo. Shocker. I know.
Jokes aside. I’d like to take some time and effort to highlight my actual thoughts on the full game now that it’s out. Because I looked forward to this CYOA, and it’s only fair that I share my experience and gripe with it.
Lots of SPOILERS
First off, I want to point out my frustration with the skill system. This is first and foremost a game, and for the skills to have little to no effect as to how the story goes was quite disappointing for me. It feels as if the checkpoints where we’re forced to train never mattered since the game keeps railroading us for the sake of progressing the story.
Now you can argue that the MC is young and inexperienced, and that’s fair. But my counterargument for that would be: have you seen Zombie Exodus: Safehaven and played as a teen? What about CCH? KoDN? In these games, the MCs are young but they demonstrated their skills when it mattered the most. In SoR- we never really got to see any pay off for all of the times we raised our stats. In fact, I don’t remember any stat check related to our skills.
There were many missed opportunities where our MC could’ve utilized their training. The “fight” at Jerean’s bar. Or when the MC was ambushed by Dick’s loyalists, which I suspect were Isabelle’s pawns. We could’ve tested our blade against our sister, Atheris, to see which of us is the better combatant. For the entirety of the game, there was no scene where our combat stats mattered. For a game called ‘Sword of Rhivenia’ you’d assume the MC would be swinging their sword a lot.
The same thing applies to our social stats.
During the scene when an aggressive man was beating the young thieves, did we get to use our communication skill to communicate to him that they were children and was in-need of gold to purchase food? Did we use our leadership skill to tell the masses who were witnessing the event that, even though thievery is wrong, there are proper ways to punish a thief without resorting to violence? We never even got to use our manipulation skill to pin the crime on the man himself out of spite. No. Instead, as a reward for helping the children, our MC, a King and ruler mind you, becomes hated for it.
That’s just one example of many, and I don’t want to spoil those who haven’t read it yet. It bothered me because there were so many instances where our skills would prove extremely useful, but was instead railroaded because the scene was set. The dialogue choices didn’t feel like choices at all, just flavor text with little to no impact to the story.
My next gripe is with the story. I liked that the MC is the fourth child. They had no chance of inheriting the throne because Richard was the favorite, but the twist is that the King doesn’t get to decide which of his kids are next for succession. A magical sword will decide who the next King or Queen is!
It’s an uphill battle from the start, and against the MC’s siblings no less. The MC is given a chance to prove that they can overcome the odds by pushing themselves to the limit to become worthy of the crown. It doesn’t matter that they’re the youngest; the sword is unbiased. It cannot be manipulated, or steered, or controlled. It is its own entity. And that’s fucking badass.
BUT!
See, here’s where it gets muddy. While the setting is great, the characters, specifically the siblings, had little to no development. Starting from Freya who never liked politics and kept to herself. Atheris who is hot-headed and brash. To Richard who, for some reason, only cared about Clara. They didn’t have any moments to show off why they should be chosen to lead a kingdom. They didn’t have anything memorable to impart to the readers, either. The siblings felt static, like a wallflower, and simply existed as a backdrop to look at.
Even my MC felt lacking. I wanted him to be kind, uncompromising in his ideals, but will not hesitate to kill their enemies if they threatened his family. But the story really, really liked humiliating him for some reason even though he’s a prince. It’s as if the game is making us deliberately be the bad guy… Hmm.
A perfect example of this would be the speech we have to give the people near the ending. After getting my MC’s ass poisoned by a piece of fax paper, he was supposed to hold a press conference. But our stats didn’t matter. Our reputations didn’t matter. Our skills definitely didn’t matter. The only thing that mattered were the ruthless choices to appease the people. The crowd’s reaction was set in stone. It doesn’t matter if you max out your communication skill, or leadership skill, or manipulation skill. None of these matters, because even if you did impress them, they will still start a rebellion.
In the middle. Of. A. War.
Boyyyyyyyyy, Rhivenians’ betta set they priorities straight. Smh.
I don’t want to end on a bad note. While I didn’t like a lot of things, I loved the romance bit. But only because I am blown away at how I can give Xavier stockholm syndrome and make him love me after daddy dearest imprisoned him. I mean, come on! He comes back for me and poisons himself just so we could be together. Now that’s cray.
On a more serious note, while the romance was short, I think it did well on humanizing the ROs, and giving the story a bit of flair. In a way, they’re a slip of sunlight in such a dark setting.
I think that’s all. This is solely my opinion and mine alone. Don’t let this review be a deterrent for those who have not experience the game yet. Perhaps you’ll find something to like about it like I did. Try it out and see for yourself.
It’s not like “blood lineage, by age” is better criterium, you might as well say “fuck it, the sword picks”
Jarean is a pirate isn’t he? I got that vibe from the pirate captain
no but in the second book there will be a pirate ro
Contrary to popular belief, you can romance Clara and still be on good terms with Richard. He doesn’t even act that annoying about being the favorite. He only brings up the fact that Charles trained him a few times, and that’s it. I would too, considering Charles rarely, if ever, interacted with his kids.
He also could care less about the throne, and he always has his siblings’ back — even Atheris, who is terrible to him. The same cannot be said for Atheris herself.
The community’s opinion of him is blown way out of proportion, in my opinion, lmao.
I got that vibe too, especially after Tameran mentioned that the last person who crossed him lost an eye. Maybe unrelated, maybe not.
Not sure why you say we cant trust atheris more than richard, maybe you have more rival points with her than friend points?
I mean even with a good relation with richard he dont even want to stop the rebellion right away, he will do it if they “hurt us again” but if it happend again maybe we will not be lucky to survive…
Shes literally the one who shows the most care towards you if have a nice relationship or even an ok one. Richard literally will get upset if you don’t care or respond to him bragging about being the only who gets to spend time with Charles.
Oh, I hadn’t considered that before! The foreshadowing makes sense now. Now Freya won’t be alone in having a (ex-) pirate lover.
Does anyone know how to betray the kingdom?
