The Sword of Rhivenia: Book One (CHECK #3830)

A question in the middle of all this debate. So in your opinion this story is worth it? I mean I would like to buy it but seeing these exchanges of opinions I am not sure anymore. :pensive:

To have one heir but several children… you have to disown the undesirables. Which is asking for a coup AND a civil war

Honestly adopted children should not be able to inherit,do not know if it was implied at some point but having the blood of the royal family should be an obvious requirement for succeeding or being recognised by the sword.

Like if my MC is allowed the adopted kiddos will not run for succession(will destroy the sword before the next generation and replace the system with good primogeniture),they will live good lives but really only a kiddo with my MC’s blood will inherit dammit.

Yeah it’s worth it, Book 1 was lacking since it"'s mostly just setting the groundwork but Book 2 is probrably going to have more things (like Fallen Hero, book was good but the overall opinion is that the WIP Sequel is better)

Well, it doesn’t respond to the firstborn either, so it may be governed by meritocracy at a young age. Have leadership skills, strength to resist every blow of our lives, and malice to anticipate the betrayal of our enemies.

What @Just_browsing said. Sums up great my view as well

If it were only this book, it would not be worth much, but considering that later they will make more books and that they will have more content, then it is worth it.

Thank you.

Nah the sword system is over for my MC,Nutella said before we will be able to destroy the sword,so my custom rules will triumph over the sibling Rivalry and tradition.

Absolute primogeniture shall be the set in stone inheritance system for Rhivenia if I have a say.

what you have to be is a good father (something that charles is not) if you treat them all well and love them equally there will not be so much rivalry and also the sword is supposed to choose the best available (although the best available changes depending on the timeline)

I mean it’s pretty suprising that no one didn’t try to ouright rig the results lol, it’s a meritocracy but the King or a very VERY ambitious heir could just go in and try to rig the results/claim the throne for themselves by killing the other candidates or simply making a coup and exiling everyone

Best case scenario is that the ruler acquires the throne at the cost of being seen as a unworthy and untrustworthy tyrant by absolutely everyone, worse case scenario is that Rhivenia falls into Heir Civil War or becomes Fragmented States fighting eachother for power

The problem with that is time. You have 24 hours between ruler’s death and sword-touching. Sure, you can plan ahead wasting resources… but if you were selected cos you’re worhty already, it’s a waste of resources

Actually, it’s plausible. To organize a feast in honor of deceased ruler and have a trusted conspirator poison not wine (tho u gotta respect the classics) but cups or cutlery in general of all heirs (yours having the reduced dose to reduce suspisions on you and making it an attack on succsession)

Yeah it’s a waste of resources if you are already the chosen one by the Sword, but you still would have a claim for the Throne and the Sword (ASSUMING that it doesn’t simply discredit them forever lol) so they could pull a “whodunnit?” By having their siblings die a natural death at the age of 20 as they trip outside of windows, a true tragedy as the only remaining heir becomes the ruler by being the last one lol

Truly a tragedy. Cause of death? Suicide by shooting 4 arrows to the face

police: the victim committed suicide

relative of the deceased: with two shots in the back?

police: he really wanted to die

Pros: Theres decent replayability, the characters are fairly likable and I enjoyed what was offered in the first book. Was overall a fun read that seems to put a lot of thought both into characters and going fairly wide in regards to making important choices.

Cons: Major branching point occurs fairly mid/late in the story, seems to be very bloated with stats that may come into relevance in a later game but don’t do much in this one, the ending is very… unsatisfying? if thats the way to word it since it very much feels more like the first third of a book, rather than the first book of a trilogy, in regards to both plot and romance development

Personally, as a IF I don’t regret buying it because exploring the various branching possibilities and seeing character’s different reactions if you make x choice one playthrough and y choice another was an enjoyable $5.

If I was viewing it solely as a book (I know some people who only play IF once), I’d say it probably isn’t worth it for the time being mainly because there wasn’t really a resolution to anything, so its difficult to judge the story until the remaining books are released.

EDIT: I probably come off as fairly critical but its a lot easier for me to put to words what I dislike, rather than what I like. I enjoyed it enough to justify spending $5 on it, but I’m unsure if I would have bought it off sale without the guarantee of the remainder of the books.

not really our father would have been distant no matter what, he only trained with richard once in years and he was his favorite

Thank you for your review. The truth is that many times I tend to go with caution in my purchases and if something does not invite me to follow the thread, it does not encourage me to continue with the story either. It happened to me with the lost Heir.

Richard was his favourite cus Mother decided to poison Isabelle

If she hadn’t poisoned her and made Isabelle infertile then he would have been much warmer to his other children (Aye there would have a favourite i agree, but he would have liked his other children too)
