well I personally I’m trying your WIP right now . And from the get go the Necro-raised background is the one I’m liking . And so far, (3 choices in)…I don’t see any tie to that background .
Or do you mean like clothes or skin color and such ?

If we’re going to be honest, most stories don’t really mention our character’s appearance that often (if at all) after picking our attributes and physical characteristics. I don’t see the necessity in bringing up the color of our eyes or skin every once in a while unless something meaningful happens to warrant it. So IMO having limited choices is a stronger drawback than the alternative.
I like being able to create my character as I see fit because it helps with bonding and improves immersion, even if it’s just a background thing that has little impact in the story.
Do you mean the Mortician? Thanks though. Well, background ties tend to be rather subtle and spread out through the story as of right now. They’re going to be much more prevalent once I polish and add more detail into Chapter One.
As of now I do mean clothes, skin color etc.
Oh, that Gilgamesh! I thought you meant the one from the old story from Mesopotamia. Well, it is a cool outfit.
Alright, a strong argument for adding in customization. I mean, I’d like friends and RO’s to comment on it sometimes and such.
well the aristocrate background got something…so yeah, the other 2 need some lovin’ too
For clothes, I personally play female and the only thing I would ask is : DONT MAKE ME WEAR A FREAKING DRESS! or skirt…
How about 3 basic outfit : aristocrate , farmer and graveyard . Then add stuff like capes and what not ?
and I’m pro-full cc
Yeah, I mean, you don’t have to make -everything- super customizable. I’d be fine with 3 basic outfits based on our background choices (like E_RedMark suggested) though if you want to make things easier on yourself you could always make them as gender-neutral as possible. Argh, I remember seeing some really cool designs on Pinterest when browsing through fantasy themes and character designs but I can’t seem to find any now… >.<
it’s always like that when you find something you like and when you wanna show it (or remember it)…POuf! can’t find it, can’t remember it
@TheAnalyst well finished the WIP . Gotta say it’s good…
But…
I think the mc from the get go can knock on someone room and get the option to flirt is kinda bizzare to me . If it were me, I kick the mc out and barricade the door . I mean, you just got there…and barely know anyone .
Some text could use some SPACE…
Like here:
With your arrival, and brief introductions having been imparted, your dorm mates each stand up and while Hussein puts down the stick he was using to attend to the fire, Alexander, Eliza, and Ramona carry their personal positions close to their chest as they each walk into one of the rooms past the doors to their independant rooms. Two of which are on the right wall, the other two on the left and one on the wall opposite to the entrance which is the one that has been left available to you. Alexander and Eliza opted for the two rooms on the left while Ramona and Hussein took the ones to the right. Alexander and Ramona taking the rooms closest to yours. Stepping into your room you find a layout which more than likely is similar to that of your companions, at the far left corner you find a queen sized bed with plain grey bed sheets and pillows more than likely meant to be easily replaced by your own preference during your stay. In the opposite right corner you find a large wooden rich brown desk with three drawers attatched and a similarly wooden chair with a plush seat and back. Attatched to the desk itself is a round shaped clock reading the current time. The space in between the bed and the desk being a decent space for you to make a few paces, which is all the better for you given much of the space is being occupied by your posessions which are currently stored away. Next to the desk is a closet, opened and closed by a sliding door big enough to house a decent sized wardrobe where on the opposite wall you find a door that leads to a simple bathroom bathed in a warm glow from the light. The window covered by black curtains that covers some of the distance between your bed and desk reveals that the tinted properties you first saw when looking at the dorms only work when it comes to a person looking in as you can see the vibrant green school grounds and nearby dorms outside your window.
Thats one big chunk and could use some space .
That’s all I can think of for now…Good luck with your story!
They’ll definitely get their loving as I shift to providing individual monologue and attitude.
Don’t worry, every gender gets to have the full selection of clothing.
I’ll consider making that the basis.
Vote is mostly in favor of this.
That’s unfortunate. Though I will be looking into varied designs as I need to try to make up fashion trends of the progression of one thousand years.
Thanks.
Yeah. I gotta introduce this dynamic more gracefully and steadily. So, I’ll put this under polishing.
Will do, I’ll also be fixing that up.
Don’t worry, you’ll get much more of that as the story goes on and the MC learns how to cast more spells and get creative with their magic. In fact, just about each of the dorm mates are going to use their preferred magic to raise some mischief so you can too.
For right now you can barely lift up a glass cup, but later on if you want to create portals to mess with Peofessor Sellaris by warping a chinchilla around in her class then you’ll be able to go ahead and do it.
Also…
Some others stuff…
for : Being Spooked from the get go . That first character you meet ? I did think that was weird . I just picked ‘‘Grow up with the dead’’ , so I was kinda imagining someone pale, calm and collected and a bit without emotions . So during that scene, we barely had any dialogue for that kind of personality and ‘‘we are Spooked’’ no matter what .
The other thing was meeting the director ? I would think reply like ‘‘Fuck off’’ would get you banned for life . Also the director showing off powers is…unprofessional . This is supposed to be a PRESTIGE hall of study and all right? I’m not saying turn him into a stern director but he could use some polish and so do the dialogues .
and last , this is merely an idea : Each background have a ‘‘Memory about magic event happening’’ , you could use that as ‘‘affinity’’ but let us choose later whatever we want . But it would give depth to the background .
I think the only strange dissapointing a bit thing I saw was the graveyard background, mean you also get the Green Thumb…ew . There goes the necro dream…
There’s a reason for that though… in this story Life and Death are intertwined so it kind of makes sense for a Necro to specialize in Life magic (which includes gardening as well) and vice-versa. It’s similar to how a doctor, a professional dedicated to healing and helping people, is also very familiar with death. And how medicine, often times used for curing and improving one’s condition, can be fatal with the wrong dosage.
Again, life and death are but two sides of the same coin.
Hmm, you’re right. Mortician’s reaction will definitely be more restrained when Ilsa teleports suddenly in front of you next update.
Jabernath has been running the school for three thousand years. He’s gotten that reaction enough times and its ancient equivalent to know quite a few skeptic students don’t take very well to thinking they’re getting conned.
As it’s been pointed out by Dartknight, Jabernath is a bit off. To him he’s dealing with a student who doesn’t consider magic a thing. Nothing is going to break that skepticism quite like “Boom! I have power over time and space! Still don’t think magic is a thing?” Ala the Ancient One in Doctor Strange.
Could you detail a little more what you have in mind?
In this magic system, the Life and Death professors also go into this. Life and Death are intrinsically linked to one another, having an affinity with one also means having traces of the other. You can focus on one, but your actions will ultimately strengthen both. I wanted necromancy to be just as much a respected field as the others. Each having their good and bad uses.
But I would’ve though a Farmer would be better at that! They plant Potatoes and Broccolee for a living!
well affinity . Like a background is the graveyard right? And you said something about life and death stuff . So you could make that background has more leaning toward either life or death . But only one .
Like say, this is an exemple of what I was thinking when I saw those ‘‘memories events’’ : The aristocrate get to see ghost and talk or hear them . Well to me if I was writing magic story, and I wanna go with this affinity thing? I would make the aristocrate one who can see ghost . I dont know what school of magic that fall under though, but medium or whatever it would be it .
But the graveyard background too hear voices from the dead . But thats different cose they are dead and all , so the domain would be more nercomancy or something similar .
I don’t know if I explained this right . But that’s what I was thinking .
@IvoryOwl yeah I know all those things . Though in real life…I kill plant just by cooing at them…so that make me a necro leecher of the greeeeeen
An example - anyone who does gardening IRL could tell you that the fallen leaves in Autumn make for excellent fertilizers (mulch). Decomposing organic matter in general can be beneficial to the plants you’re trying to grow, be they crops for food or decorative gardens. You need Death to grow new Life. Those piles of feces at dairy farms for examples, are mostly plants have been “killed” and digested by animals. You’re using those remains to feed other plants, thus repeating the cycle.
When you have to do that on such a wide scale you kinda focus more on the work around you and become more familiar with the environment than anything else.
Death Magic.
Ah, well the personality stats pretty much serve that purpose.
Intelligence = Arcane, Rune, and Tech.
Constitution = The four greek basic elements.
Essence = Life and Death.
You can modify these depending on your free time.
Hum…one thing I just remembered, to have the option to form friendshipe if we don’t want romance . You think that’s possible ?
I love romance, smoochies are sacred to me lol but your story is orientation locked . Therefore if I don’t like the romance I’m stuck with, or someone doesn’t care for the romance . I’m hoping there would be some friendship and options like at the Movie Night to ‘‘Sit alone and away from everyone- or next to a friend you choose’’ .
Oh and the whole ‘Sit alone’ is more a personal choice lol cose I’m one of those peoples who like it when everyone shuttup…we are watching a movie for pete sake! Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…argh…I missed a sceneeeeeeeeeee…cose you were all blahblah…
Yeah, that’s something of the default.
Alright, one will be able to sit alone if they please. I mean, sitting next to someone for the movie night is more inherently friendly. At least in this case.
Understandable. I do have something in mind for next update to get the dorm mate next to the MC to quiet down and watch the movie as it’s meant to be as opposed to have their accompanying commentary. As anyone who wants said commentary will be able to banter about it next time.
friendly if you know these peoples . In chapter 1 you barely know them . Some peoples won’t mind taking a seat near one of them, especially if the seat are limited (which can be an option nudge nudge) .
But I personally wouldn’t take a seat near peoples I barely know for a couple of hours…a day?
You could also add small stuff that tie to ‘Visit X in their rooms’’ like ‘‘ramona smile and pat the seat next to her…inviting you’’ and you get more +++ with said character . You could do small stuff with each one based on their personality .
Just remember akward, shy personality wouldn’t see stuff…like this normal or easy
Indeed, I’ll have this in mind as I polish up Chapter One next time.
how about activities ? Like playing cards and such ? Or have a personal hobbie tie to the background ? hum…like aritocrate play the piano or violin . Farmer …composte?..
Graveyard could tend books…library?
