This song makes me think of this IF every time I listen to it!

Unrealistic the landlady would never agree to change this many terms on the contract

This is awesome! Really the only thing I could ask from it, besides more haha, is more timid flirt options. I noticed a few playful ones and just thought in some scenes, a timid flirt would be possible. I adore the setting, characters, and options!

I just finished this WIP and I’m in love. Horror is my favorite genre….and with a little bit of romance mixed in? Perfection.

I did want to point out, would it be possible to have a tattooed MC? Because a tattoo artist MC with no tattoos doesn’t make any sense - tattoo artists practice on ourselves before we can tattoo on customers.

Unless I interpreted the talk with Croft wrong? We replied to him saying we don’t have any when he spoke about his magic.

Okay I think I’ve figured out how to articulate why tattoo artist doesn’t work for me in a way that’s a bit more constructive as feedback than just “It doesn’t fit my specific character.” It’s that, for me at least, tattoo artist feels a lot more specific and like it says more about the character than a lot of the other options.
Like with the other options that were presented for the poll, all the job says about the person is that, 1) they’re creatively inclined and 2) this is their preferred way of expressing their creativity. Meanwhile a tattoo artist is someone who, for a living, stabs someone repeatedly with multiple needles in order to permanently etch a design into their skin. Which implies both someone who has the people skills to work with clients to figure out how to do what they want, as well as the confidence and lack of squeamishness needed to as mentioned prior, permanently alter someone’s skin by repeatedly stabbing them.

So whereas something like painter or writer could work for both a more confident outgoing MC and my nervous wreck of an MC, tattoo artist, to me at least only really works for the former.

Also unrelated, but on re-reading I noticed a bit of a potential missed opportunity. When an MC with the podcaster job mentions doing an episode on Croft, I think it would be neat for a trans MC to be able to give something along, “The disappearance of a prominent trans figure was something kinda personal to me, and I wanted to bring attention to it.” as their reason for doing so. Assuming of course that Croft being trans was public enough information for them to know that.

Responses approximately a million years later, as I’ve unfortunately been going through some bad brain stuff. Apologies, everyone!

@Yorha Currently things like tattoos are up to player’s headcanon, but it’s a customization option I’d eventually like to add! It just isn’t highest priority rn (want to focus on the next update); but I agree that it makes sense especially for tattoo artist MC c:

@wishOtherwise Thank you! Currently I’m not sticking firmly to timid/bold flirt options; mostly the flirt options are a bit ‘bolder’ because I see them as more playfully flirting than genuinely flirting. I’ll definitely go through at some point to make sure that there’s a good variety for different personality types, though!

@hapamama93 I likely won’t add a flirt bar, simply due to the reasons above! I wouldn’t want a player to be confused that there aren’t specific shy/bold options when I’m being a bit more flexible with it, and I’d feel a set bar would make me feel more stuck to those two specific flavors of flirting. Sorry about that!

@shadowfire101 Thank you so much for your thoughts! Genuinely, I really appreciate them. I understand where you’re coming from, and I do agree that tattoo artist is a bit more specific than most of the other career options. There are a few different reasons I went with it in the end.

The biggest reason being that some of the other options were just too general–it’s the same reason that MC is specifically a true crime podcaster. If I made MC a writer or even painter (or a non-specified podcaster, in this comparison), I’d feel the need to allow the player to specify what kind of work they make. I’m a glutton for customization, but if I let people get too specific, then the branching tends to spiral out of control. Plus, I feel like tattoo artist MC can have related interactions with Beck and Croft both, which I’m enjoying planning out.

I do understand it’s a bit more limiting, though–and I’m sorry about that! Thank you again for sharing your thoughts on the matter; I really appreciate them.

And oh I’d never even considered that angle on Croft’s disappearance!! That’s an excellent idea. Croft was very open about being trans when they were outside of Easthaven, and I’m always eager to have more opportunities like this, where trans MCs can feel a kinship with the other trans characters. I’ll definitely be looking into adding this as an option, tysm!

I totally get what you’re saying here. I think though, one thing your reply made me realize, thats worth pointing out, is that tattoo artist kind of has an unfair advantage in that regard, for the same reasons it doesn’t really work for my character. Tattoo artist is one specific job with a very exact description whereas the others are almost more akin to genres of job.

Like of course tattoo artist is going to beat out illustrator in a specificity contest. A tattoo artist is a specific kind of illustrator.

So like sure writer is too general, but somewhere between “writer” and “author of this one specific book” there’s a job that hits the sweetspot of specificity, same for all the other “job genres” presented. I just think, for me at least, tattoo artist misses that sweet spot.

I loved the demo !

Cross posting my latest follower milestone gift from tumblr here! It’s a full POV of the scene where Croft and MC meet, from their POV. It’s roughly 33k words long.

Minor trigger warnings for everything in the original scene, mentions of skin picking, as well as just a general warning that Croft is really mean to MC in their head at times. Wanted to give a heads up in case that sort of thing might bother someone!

Work on the next chapter is going great, and I’m hopeful for a release fairly soon c:
