The Last Scion
We’re proud to announce that The Last Scion, the latest in our popular “Choice of Games” line of multiple-choice interactive-fiction games, is now available for Steam, Android, and on iOS in the “Choice of Games” app.

It’s 33% off until June 26th!

Take to the skies! You fell to Earth as the last remnant of a dying world – can you rise as the planet’s greatest hero and triumph as a beacon of justice? Shrug off bullets, smash buildings with your bare hands, and soar through the air as you battle diabolical supervillains!

The Last Scion is an interactive superhero novel by D. G. P. Rector. It’s entirely text-based, 200,000 words and hundreds of choices, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

You are the Scion, sole survivor of the distant planet Utopia. Scientists on your homeworld imbued you with phenomenal powers – flight, speed, intelligence, strength, and resilience beyond the reach of any ordinary human – and sent you to Earth, accompanied only by your AI companion, MENTOR. Your quest: to carry on the legacy of Utopia by embodying its ideals in your new home.

And Beacon City is in desperate need. The Torchbearers, heroic defenders of the city, are all gone: those who weren’t slain by the villainous Silent Order have gone into hiding. Only a few people remain to carry on their legacy, trying to bring justice back to Beacon City – and they want your help.

By day, do your best to blend in as an ordinary human working at the Beacon City Tribune. By night, soar the skies and fight the villains of the Silent Order: reptilian Gorgon, mischievous telepath Poppet, brilliant scientist Vector, and especially the mysterious leader, Conqueror.

Will you fulfill your homeworld’s dream of carrying Utopia’s ideals to the new planet? Or will you turn to villainy, and possibly achieve greater power than anyone on Utopia could ever conceive?

Play as male, female, or nonbinary; gay, straight, or bi.
Choose a secret identity at the Beacon City Tribune: maintenance worker, IT specialist, or mild-mannered reporter!
Customize your super-suit, including the most crucial question that a hero can answer: capes, or no capes?
Romance a relentless vigilante, a dashing hero, an intrepid reporter, a hard-boiled detective, or a roguish villain!
Work with the Beacon City PD and stay on the right side of the Superhero Investigation Agency – or push them aside, and soar above the law.
Use subtlety and empathy to turn your enemies away from villainy, or fight them head-on with your super-strength – or join them in villainy!

We hope you enjoy playing The Last Scion. We encourage you to tell your friends about it, and recommend the game on Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and other sites. Don’t forget: our initial download rate determines our ranking on the App Store. The more times you download in the first week, the better our games will rank.

Is CoG free to use the word “superhero” in their marketing now? I thought DC and Marvel were still adamant on keeping the term trademarked.

Playing right now! Very “Justice League Unlimited” feel to it, if anyone’s a fan of the DCAU. Only thing is I’m afraid I won’t get to actually fight any villains because they’re all so sympathetic! I just want to help them!

Hello, not sure if this is a bug or intended but if you talk down Conqueror in the final battle then decide to spare him, you get the epilogue where you side with him against humanity (Vae Victis).

It was quite the whiplash since I was playing an empathetic MC.

Wow, I didn’t expect this game to be completed and release so fast.

Tried out the demo on a whim first even though I intended to buy anyway and the writing really drew me in.

Flows quite well, is easy to follow/read, and has so far not made me stumble with an ‘I wouldn’t do that’ moment.

200k is also a very reasonable reading length that will not exhaust me so I’m optimistic I will get to the end as well maybe, possibly replay it.

I love long stories as much as anyone but the great doorstoppers can be a bit intimidating.

Congratulations @dgprector!

Fans of superhero games should definitely give this one a try. The setup is a pretty standard power fantasy - imagine if Kal-El had come to Earth as an adult and leapt out of the capsule ready to kick ass - but it manages to be so much more than that, without being any less fun. You can fly, lift multi-ton objects, take a punch or throw one better than anyone - but your home planet’s noble ideals did little to prepare you for a world where right and wrong, victim and villain, aren’t always so clear-cut. Will your strength be tempered by an equally powerful compassion, or are you as determined to punish the guilty as you are to protect the innocent? Or maybe what you’d really like is to see those puny, uppity mortals groveling at your feet.

A couple of chapters in particular are both entertaining and heavy-hitting, and one may have made me cry.

Stellar experience and definitely a highlight of the year so far. I do have to note one amusing very late game bug. Spoilers below.

During the final confrontation with Conqueror, I talked him down (and triggered the achievement for it). I then let him fly away into exile but then in the next chapter the Vae Victis achievement triggered and I hilariously got the last chapter where we broke the world and remade it into our Utopia. Whoops Apocalypse! I’m presuming there’s a few flag and pathing issues there.

I’m aware of the bug, and believe me, will fix it ASAP. Right now when I play through the game with my own files I don’t get that error, so I’m guessing there’s some tag I’m missing or something wacky going on.
But, uh… congrats on accidentally taking over Earth?

According to Reuters, they lost a court case back in October of 24 and the right to the exclusive use of “superhero.” Good news. The term has gone the way of Kleenex for facial tissue.

First, loving the game, it’s great! Second can anyone give me some advice on how to romance Poppet? Idk what I’m doing wrong…

Haha, thank you. Truly the law of unintended consequences at work!

I was using the mobile version of the COG app if that helps at all.

What are the ROs?

Okay just finished the game and it’s pretty good. It’s a straightforward, short and sweet read. It was full of cringe and cliche moments which made me both laugh and cringe. I recall at one moment you were throwing a villain to the ocean and you MC had the option of saying "hope you can swim":joy:, haha. The roguish villain was one of the highlights of the game romancing her and I wish Ros had more screentime but nonetheless I won’t be forgetting this book anytime soon
