The House of Torment: WIP

I uploaded a new .html version of the file. Here’s the link. It’s on my google drive and for some reason if you use their viewer it perceives it to be a plain text document reguardless of the .html file extension. It is still pre-spell checked. You might notice that I changed the names of the primary attributes to the player characters. I felt like something weird was going on with the dice rolling test and what stats were being used for various tests. Testing this I made a list and found a lot of overlap that did not make sense even though I really used the rpg rulebook as the guide. So I changed the stat labels and gave each a list of various test that they cover so that I would be consistent. I also discovered that my combat section didn’t even touch on how weapons are listed, handled or even presented in the game a complete omission on my part. So I whipped that up into shape. Oh I admit this game plays like a solo rpg but as I wrote more and more I realized the dice rolling meant less and less. As always ignore the bad spelling, enjoy the story, and I always welcome constructive criticism!

See bottom or top link for current build link.

Stepping back from my game I realized that at 100+ code words that the list is a bit much. So I went back quickly and began to look at what codes are required and which ones are not. Most of them are required as either keys or as ‘ignore codes’. So I looked at my copy of ‘The fabled Lands #6’ and realized something simple. They use ‘check boxes’ in various places. You were supposed to check a box if you did one thing or another. These in essence are code words that activate or deactivate something. So this add 25 ‘code words’ to their already existing list of 36 for a total of 61 code words. Now my list of 101 seems less obvious but for such a physicaly smaller adventure I really need to compound code words. I need to weed out the blatant ones that are not needed.

Updated to most recent build. swapped long codes for checkbox style ignore codes. added new bad guy, alternate ending, etc etc. Still has issues with bold face fonts due to conversion utility.

5/13/2015 New update. All long codes now include 2 letter checkbox codes as an option for record keeping. This allows the book keep the long code ‘feeling’ but at the same time keep the function of the short codes. Some html link issues due to conversion utility. It is now spell checked, supposedly. Added a few new items. Gameplay elements and how they can become simplified are now flittering into my mind starting with that giant raven in the attic.

I hope to include a little hand sketched art in the final version. A ‘bookmark’ character sheet with “event codes” listed on the back as check boxes.

I also realize that I can now take two (unimportant to plot) in game weapons and give them to the player characters as starting weapons. I’m thinking of turning the fireplace poker into a ‘fighting cane’ for Gabriele and a dagger for Ulrich. Or should I give Ulrich a top hat and give him the cane and Gabriele the boot dagger?

Have yet to implement starter weapons BUT I have created a new death for the snake monster on the 3hd floor, and reworked the intros for the male and female player characters. They flow easier and read better and feel less constructed.

I have altered and changed a bunch of scenes. Small changes here and there in addition to various small error’s that I’ve found. Once again Enjoy the game.

Not dead yet! I’m still alive and kicking. I just recently changed the dice rules to an extremely simplified version of DnD and added 3 New character start up routines. New links to follow as the old files were removed… the map and some layout has changed. Will skip the .html format from now on to make downloads easier. As always still looking for feedback on the story and not the game elements. I,ve seriously considered switching it to blind choice with event codes. Yes I use both 2 letter codes along with long word descr. To keep ease and feeling of flow. Check out my House of torment Facebook page for more. Don’t change that dial! More to come after these messages!

For some reason my editor keeps throwing in lines that separate paragraphs at random. I do not know the source of it and it bothers me to no end. I also often find the editor throwing in extra spacing between paragraphs at times. It’s set not to do so and somehow its still there.

I hope you enjoy this minor update in the rules.

Ready to convert to Choice-Of-Games engine for more distribution. I can export from advelh36e to html but the conversion is way outa wack. Even then that does not take account of the game system. I greatly entreat anyone out there to give it a once over. Is there software out there that could help with the conversion?
