The Dragon's Covenant (WIP)

No lol, dont worry, I meant it more like on their story/origin, both of them are heirs to a great lineage, and they could end up being really important pieces on the board, but at the same time, they could just as easily fade into obscurity without anyone ever knowing. Arael in her cabin, Jon on the Wall. Personality-wise, though, they’re very different hahaha.

Yeah, in my mind that would also fit nicely with MCs that end up on the “it’s not worth romancing or having attachments because I’m superior or azgor and him are above” such things. In the other side if you just don’t want to you can have something to fill the content gap a romanceless mc is.

It could end up being a somewhat generic ending somewhere down the line where you just give up and leave with whoever you care or even alone with a very brief summarization of what happens after, isolation, crippling loneliness, and maybe, succumbing to Azgor all-together in the end depending on how badly you were when you left. Just leaving some thoughts since it sounds like a fun ending to explore.

And the personality thing felt pretty defining in my mind, one is detached from the reality of needs, a machine—at least in the beginning. The other with delusions of grandeur or just above whatever is happening. The other seems like just depressed and coping with the crippling existence that has been forced upon the main character—which to me is the most likely and most popular (I bet) of the choices players go to. To me these personalities could change or fizzle out in time since the character we have in the beginning is not the same we have by the end of chapter 1, having a time to to think about your own self and define a new set of “philosophies” would be nice, not that is the same but difference, since the main character is evolving— unless they don’t want to. With the fall of the city they were supposed to protect from a machine with a job you come to realize there’s more to it than x y z or you still are and want to make your own if you don’t have it/or support it. The second one could be that they realize they are actually not all mighty or they get even more fueled with desire. And the third is just the same, to be honest, but the difference is that they realize they are not alone anymore and slowly crawl out of the hole. (This way you could funnel the personalities to a routes overall mood of the mc or funnel the variable to the stats system) and in top of that it doesn’t have to happen at the same time but they could eventually just not be relevant to the story as I said before the mc either would be too different from his past self or his deeds are the ones driving his personality.

Hopefully my thoughts aren’t too convoluted and are understandable lol.

Ah yes and besides that, Azgor changes to the mc body, I’m expecting him to age slower now because of it so I’m curious if I’m right.

Just finished the story and I absolutely love it! Thank you for the wonderful content so far! There’re some repeated paragraphs (sorry that I forgot to take screenshots) but otherwise the flow of the writing feels amazing.

I do wonder if we will be able to interact with Arael on a deeper level if we choose the friendship path. I like Arael a lot during my first playthrough - my MC is deeply attached to her & in a weird sense she is like a mother figure to my MC - so it definitely feels off when MC can’t say goodbye to her before rushing back to the capital. Because of the age difference between them and the fact that Arael is the first ever person to defeat MC I can see how MC would look up to her like a parental/mentor figure and would be reluctant to leave her. It gets even weirder when suddenly MC became guilt-ridden because they failed to prevent the attack on the capital - I chose the arrogant path in the beginning and most of the time resented being treated like a tool so the guilt part feels kind of unexpected. Maybe this is connected to my humanity stat and I have unwittingly raised it too high?

Yeah, I don’t plan on locking the personality based on that first choice. The stats will keep shaping things as the story progresses, but I do want to eventually go back and add more variations tied to personality. Some parts feel a little too bland to me as they are now. That said, I also don’t want to fall into the “eternally rewriting” trap, lol. So first make it exist, then later make it good.

And yep, the MC will live way longer than a normal human thanks to Azgor.

Hey, I’m glad you enjoyed it, and that’s a really cool interpretation of Arael! I hadn’t thought about it that way before, but I like it.

As for the option to tell Arael you’re leaving, it was originally locked behind a relationship check. Right now in the files i’m working on, it’s set at 60, but I don’t think I uploaded that version yet, it used to be higher. Funny thing is, I already wrote a scene where the MC talks to her about leaving on a friendship path, long before I even started chapter 2, but I don’t think anyone ever saw it because the requirement was too high before. With the new threshold, it should be more achievable, but I’ll double-check later.

The guilt over Emberford crumbling ties back to how the MC was raised. No matter how they turn out, they were groomed since childhood with one purpose drilled into them over and over: Emberford is everything. In my view, all three personality paths still place heavy weight on it, even if they try to hide it or deep down know that it was something forced on them.

The arrogant/prideful MC, for example, I believe deep down still would crave the adoration, or fear of the people, even if they’d never admit it. Watching Emberford fall would be a massive blow to their ego: not only did they fail their duty, but they also lost the very people who fueled that pride. Their identity is built on fragile pillars, “I’m better because I’m the Warden of Emberford”… until the city falls. “I’m better because everyone loves/fears me”… until everyone’s gone. “I’m better because I’m the most powerful”… and yet they still failed at their only purpose.

But maybe I didn’t explore this side enough. I do think I neglected varying some descriptions enough based on the personality like I mentioned before, I’ll probably go back and rework older scenes eventually, retroactively adding more variation, improving flow, and fleshing things out where it feels too thin. I’m trying to avoid getting stuck on constant rewrites. I feel like that can take a lot of time and end up making a lot of people lose interest over the story.

Yep, that’s the end of the current version. It was meant to send you to an end page, but I think I accidentally broke it when I uploaded a few files to test something. It’s been taking a while, almost three months since the last update I think, but I’m hoping to finally wrap it up this month if everything goes well.

I’m still aiming to get the update out this month. I’ve been working a lot these last few months, and by the time I finally have some free time, I’m usually too burned out to actually sit down and write as much as I’d like. But I’ve been pushing through. It should be ready either by the end of this month or, at the latest, the first week of October.

I’ve been eager to share this update for a while now, but I kept finding little things to add, so it just kept growing, lol. As a little teaser, the total is already over 300k words, so hopefully it’ll be a pretty good read.

Take all the time you need we don’t want you to die.

Looking forward for the update. :+1::+1::+1:

Are you doing well? :pleading_face::pleading_face::pleading_face:

Oh, it’s nothing serious, don’t worry. It’s more of a seasonal thing, some months there’s more to do than others, and I end up working longer hours, which cuts into how much I can write. I’ve been pretty tired, but I’m doing okay. Thank you for the concern!

Update 8 (27/09/2025): This update adds around 71k words, bringing the total to 327k words. So… good news and bad news, haha. The good news is that the update is finally out and it’s the biggest one so far. The bad news is that it’s not quite as large as I originally planned, and it doesn’t close out Chapter 2 yet. There’s a lot I want to go over, so if you can, please take a moment to read through this post, I’ll explain where things stand and what my plans are going forward.

Originally, I wanted this update to cross 100k words and wrap up Chapter 2. But as I’ve mentioned before, work has been piling up, and I just couldn’t keep writing at my old pace. I already have plenty of drafts for the rest of the chapter, but nothing even close to polished enough to release. I don’t think I could finish it in less than a month, and since the last part of Chapter 2 will be packed with action (and hopefully the most fun to read), I’d rather take my time with it and add more variations. That’s why I split things here instead. It’s been nearly three months with no new content, and I didn’t want to leave you guys waiting any longer, and also because I was eager to finally share this part.

With this update, I was mainly able to:

Introduce the first of the three main antagonists finally.

Add the first alternate POV chapters.

Experiment with a new money system.

Explore more with coding and behind-the-scenes tweaks.

This has honestly been my favorite update to write so far. There’s so much lore and foreshadowing sprinkled throughout the dialogues, and I can’t wait to see what you guys notice. That said, I did have to cut a lot for time. Some scenes may feel a little rushed, that’s temporary. Since I’ve been writing without much feedback, I thought it’d be better to release what I have now, then dedicate the next update to expanding and improving based on your responses.

Before we dive into the update details though: does anyone know how to make a blog or page for a project on Tumblr? Almost every author here seems to have one, and I’ve never used it before. I thought it could be a nice way to try promoting the game to more people.

But anyway, spoilers to the update bellow, I recommend only reading this after finishing the update:

This update focuses on preparations for the siege of Laphis. Here are some areas that were cut short or postponed, and that I plan to revisit in the next update:

  • Exploring Laphis: I cut a lot to avoid dragging the pacing, but I do want to expand this later.
  • The map: The free Inkarnate version limits me, so it’s simpler than I’d like, but I cant really pay for the premium now. The palette is meant to feel yellow-orange, like a savanna, with more varied architecture.
  • Recruiting the giants: Originally meant to be longer, with more interactions with Walls and tests with the giants. Cut for pacing, but I’ll expand it.
  • Hunts with Ruby: Planned more, but cut for time. More options will be added.
  • Camp preparations: There were supposed to be events with Lyra, Cassiel, and Arael too. I’ll add them again of course, but I’d love to hear if you have any ideas on what to do with them.
  • Thalassari encounter (if you roared): This follow-up was cut for now but will definitely be in the next update.
  • Optional POV chapters (Walls and Ruby): Postponed since their scenes might expand.
  • Romance scenes (Ruby and Walls): Also postponed for the same reason.
  • Optional POV chapters (Ecbert and Theresa): Still coming, just held back for time.
  • Advancing poly relationship with Lyra: Will appear in the next update.
  • Bringing the Lyra topic up to Arael: Next update.
  • Handing out the gifts: Too many variations to finish in time, so postponed.
  • Recruiting Captain Glade: Will be in possible next update.

Map of Laphis, still a WIP. It shoud show up when exploring the city.

When I say “next update,” I don’t mean Update 9 (where the battle starts). I mean Update 8.5, which will focus entirely on improving, expanding, and polishing what’s here, and most importantly, adjusting things based on your feedback.

There shouldn’t be any game-breaking bugs, but I haven’t been able to test everything. If you spot errors or weird loops, please let me know.

That’s all for now. Thank you all so much for the support and the patience, it means a lot!

Error found:

error pops up when attempting to visit the market.

Can’t upload a screen cap for some reason so just going to type out the error message.

laphisexplore line 81: Invalid expression at char 22, expected OPERATOR or CLOSE_PARANTHESIS, was: OPERATOR [%]

Error only pops up for the market option, other options load just fine.

Oh, I forgot to update the math for calculating the money in that scene, it was still using the broken version from before. Thanks for pointing it out, it completely slipped my mind, lol. It should be fixed now!

Market option works now, just a thing I noticed not an error but may be an unintentional loop, when prepping your army, you can go visit the giants and after that the option doesn’t get grayed out instead you can redo the sequence of events again.

If you visit the giants then select hunting until its grayed out you can then visit the giants and after the sequence of events the hunting becomes available again.

It does not appear to alter the strength of the army any if you visit the giants multiple times.

But you can farm the hunting to gain more money.

The days left counter also doesn’t increment, it starts at 0 and stays at 0 no matter the options chosen.

Side note:

Also the option to train your dragon form is grayed out for me not sure if that is a bug or if its a fake choice or I just didn’t trigger a flag needed to choose that option. I did accept Azagors proposal to change my body into a more draconic nature.

Oh, the giants option was supposed to be greyed out afterward, I think the issue could be because it switches the scene file. I’ll take a look and try to fix it.

Edit: yeah, that was the problem, just fixed it.

The hunting options were also meant to be greyed out after doing them once, but I’ve fixed that now.

As for the day counter, it’s not fully implemented yet, I’m still figuring out how to make it work haha.

The dragon option, though, is working fine on my end. The only prerequisite is having accepted Azgor’s offer back in the Battle of Emberford. Maybe you accidentally misclicked that choice on the skip page?
