Tale of Two Cranes (Out March 7)

can i beta test the game

@Hylaire_Dessalines1 Thanks for your interest, but the game has been submitted to the COG contest and is no longer in the beta test phase. @SharpOne and I are still making corrections, little additions, and whatnot, but it’s no longer our primary focus as we return to older projects.

Just finished playing the demo, and I’ve got to say that it’s one of my favourite WIPs so far. I very rarely see choicescript games written from first person perspective, but I think I actually prefer it this way. It somehow feels more intimate than second person to me.

The character’s are all really interesting. I particularly like Lin Ninghong. She’s a fun character. I’m also really fascinated with Chan Ming, and interested to see where my character’s relationship with him will go. I can’t tell whether the two will end up being friends, lovers, rivals or enemies. Right now, it feels like it could go any way.

I suppose the only problem I had was that I often found it difficult to keep track of all the character’s names, but you can chalk that up to me being an uncultured westerner, rather than it being an actual problem with the game. :yum:

@Avery_Moore To be considered one of a fellow writer’s favorites is high praise! This just made my day; thank you! :hugs:

@TwoSharp and I debated on using first vs second person when we first started this project. Our personal styles heavily favored first person, but most WIPs and published games are in second person and have found great success (and we do want to succeed  ). As the finished product demonstrates, we went with first person because we felt more comfortable and stronger in that perspective.

I’m so happy you like Lin Ninghong! We barely gotten any positive feedback regarding her character and we were starting to wonder if we made a misstep in her presentation. As for ChĆ”n MĆng, from the start we strove for that ambiguity (half the fun’s in the mystery).

I can see where it would be hard to keep track of all the characters especially because most of them are introduced in Chapter 3 and many of the names can blend together (take the Liu family for instance: Bang, Fei, Yuan, Ying, to name a few).

Thanks so much for checking out our game; we greatly appreciate your feedback and wish you all the best in the contest! :kissing_heart:

Lin Ninghong grew on me! She was too wholesome for me at first but I liked how you guys wrote her character as the game progressed. She gave me Josephine Montilyet vibes tbh. I didn’t get to romance her in the beta but she’s one of the first ones I’m thinking of pursuing when the game is released.

I’ve had similar issues with games I’ve written, where characters that are some of my own personal favourites happen to be the readers least favourites. What I tend to find is that readers generally prefer characters that’re more or less ā€œnormalā€, whereas I personally prefer characters that’re very unique and quirky. That’s why I like Lin Ninghong. I found her super upbeat and positive personality to be quite fun. Kind of Manic, Pixie Dreamgirlish. (What I do find with the more unique characters though, is that while you might get 100 people who say, ā€œMeh, not really my kind of person,ā€ you will get that one reader who says, ā€œOMG, this is my favourite character ever!ā€)

That’s true, but then… The game is set in China. It’s not like you could’ve just named the characters Bob and Steve and Gary, just to make their names more recognizable. :yum:

Awh, thank you! You too! :sparkling_heart:

I love the story so far… it had been such an enjoyable read, i haven’t finish the first play-through …but i am already wondering whether you are going to deal with the infamous tragedy of ā€œFarewell My Concubineā€ ? I know the outcome of the war but can it be change on this interactive novel ?

But anyway, i had decided to side with Xiang Yu and it will be interesting to face my own father in battlefield …i always found Xiang Yu as the more honourable side between the two warring faction , so i want to see whether my involvement can alter the history  Although i had thought that both Liu Bang and Xiang Yu respect and like one another, instead of hating one another as the story here told ?

@zenbu We wanted to make many of the characters who were introduced as children/teens have some growth in personality as time went on, so, we’re happy to hear that we succeeded (at least with her character).

I totally agree with this. I found this to be especially true in my and @SharpOne first WIPs where we had a large cast of characters. Readers heavily favored two more common character types (the stoic serious guy and the hot tempered, but good hearted woman) while I favored the more complex and eccentric individuals.

@Eric_knight Thank you so much for the feedback! Unfortunately, I’m not familiar with ā€œFarewell My Concubineā€, but I assume that it refers to Xiang Yu and his consort and their (historically) tragic end. As to what to expect in the next few chapters, know that each chapter experiences a time skip. The actual historical war was huge with so many events going on; to tell the story we wanted we had to be very selective with what was part of the game and that meant cutting certain things short for what the reader experiences.

Finally, historically I have no idea how the two felt about one another. For our story we felt it was very natural for the two to be near opposites on most things and yet hugely popular to many people (Xiang Yu to soldiers and Liu Bang to the common people).

hahaha…you are right, it is the tragic end when Xiang Yu bid his farewell to his consort, it was said Xiang Yu request both his consort and his horse to leave in the final battle, but neither obey…the consort kill herself to prove her loyalty to him, this scene had been made into a stage opera called Farewell my concubine

Your story is a wonderful story… i can’t wait to meet Fang Lan again

No guarantee … i believe i read that the winning Novel of the contest will be publish , as for the rest of the novels, we can only speculate they all will be publish some time in the future…

the winner of the contest should be announce by June, but the rest of the publication process should take few more months

Thus far, i only tried Mystic for both Xiang Yu and Liu Bang campaign , Xiang Yu’s campaign of protecting the consort seems more interesting , although we have to kill all the prisoners

@Eric_knight Fang Lan seems to be a fan favorite  Also, if I’m thinking of the scene you’re referring to then there is a way to persuade Xiang Yu to spare the prisoners’ lives.

@Vanessa_Pang Sorry for the confusion on the game’s status; I keep forgetting to update the title/first post  As @Logan3000x said we have finished beta testing and submitted it to the COG contest (Yay!)

While I don’t have any personal experience with publishing a choicescript game, I think it’s safe to say that it’ll be at least a few months. I believe I’ve seen estimates of 6 months to a year in regards to wait time (but who can say?)

Hi,
First of all I’ve just recently tried this and I loved it. =D I’m quite happy to see more Eastern history amd mythology CoG/HGs. This reminds
a bit of FE:A/Fates where we could help to create a new dynasty or defend your homeland. Also, I want to ask if there are any list of ROs ? =)

Who is your favourite character ?

I suspect the ROs are Fang Lan, Zhang Bohai, Liu Yuan, Liu Fei and Lin Ninghong

@SharpOne If we marry Liu Yuan or Liu Fei, can the MC become Emperor/Empress in the future

From what I understand, the intention is for the top 3 winning games to receive publication under the Choice of Games label, though CoG don’t actually guarantee that they’ll publish any of the winning entries, if the games don’t meet their standards. (From what I’ve seen though, that looks highly unlikely, as the majority of demos I’ve read for the CoG contest entries look like they’re more than good enough to be posted under the CoG label.)

So far, my MC has a childhood crush with Zhang Bohan. I cannot really state my opinion for Liu Fei due to limited interaction.

Fang Lan is quite lively and compliment my proper MC. As for Liu Yuan, she seems nice but I got the feeling she knows how to play politics.

I haven’t met Lin Ninghong though. =(

Additional question: I notice under the relationship stat, there are some traits stated. For example, Liu Fei leans towards more on egocentric, forgiving and honorable. Does this mean, I need my MC have these three traits?
