Sudden Rise of Cultivation-esque WIPs?

Is it just me or is there significantly more Cultivation-based Choicescript WIPs now more so than ever?

If you don’t know what ‘Cultivation’ is, its essentially the equivalent of Eastern Fantasy, typically in a Chinese or Chinese-like setting, with a prominent power system composed of meditating and gathering Qi or similar types of mystical energy to extend one’s lifespan and power.

The most popular would be Path of Martial Arts, which is absolute cinema. That WIP has been a staple for years, but now it has many new contemporaries. What do you think might have caused this?

Not that I’m complaining, I just wish half of them would at least have decent grammar…

The ones writing the newer IFs were most likely inspired to write their own after reading a cultivation IF they really liked. It’s only natural for other iterations to pop up when one is popular. It’s the same with other genres.

Now I’m waiting for a regression IF with dungeon breaks and system pop-ups lol.

There’s a lot of Cultivation lightnovels and live action adaptation popular right now, so likely that has an impact.

Cultivation has been on the rise outside of IF, so it was only natural that a few WIPs would pop up. I read a lot of fantasy but not really cultivation, I only know about it by hear-say, but even Amazon has been recommending me cultivation novels! :joy:

Also, the recent Aura Clash debacle created a vacuum that likely encouraged some to take on the mantle. That’s my theory anyway. And it’s not a bad thing, by the way.

Indeed - though there was already a market for cultivation games without the sexism, racism and homophobia, and some games were being made to cater to that.

Some folks get inspiration from the ones that others have. Some folks just get inspired by the attention or money the others get. Either way, it leads to a wave of similar stories.

I’m complaining, instead. I won’t have anything to read soon….

The few new WIPs where MC isn’t a warrior in some medieval world are usually poor quality or gender-locked female.

You should check out the monthly WIP digests I put together, there are a lot of new and recent projects that aren’t about being a medieval warrior!

When projects become popular it makes sense that people feel inspired to make their own, it’s part of the ecosystem here really. I’ve seen various genres ebb and flow, and because WIPs get started more often than releases, it’s a relatively quick process.

I’m not complaining. Wuxia type stuff has always appealed to me, but well-
POMA has the protagonist be a constant fumbler and the other one I can think of right now has severe grammar and pacing issues so I’m not actually that into them.
Aura Clash is still my favorite, but there was that whole debacle about it awhile ago.

Wish there will be more good cultivation interactive fiction, as I am a fan of that genre and have read plenty of novels , revered Insanity one of my fav,

These come in waves. We’ve had a pirate wave, a superhero one (that’s stuck around for a lot longer than most). Zombies and separately vampires were popular at points too. Let’s not forget all the magic school ones as well.

Basically if there’s a popular game that comes out, or more often something is popular in books or shows, more games come out about that topic. There’s been some big cultivation threads on here. I’m not surprised if more people are chasing that popularity trend. The popular games eclipse the ones that aren’t popular so then most other WIPs barely get noticed.

I’d argue there’s also a WIP band/music wave now after Infamous. You have Press Play, Scapegoated, and at least two more I’ve forgotten the names of.

Does it, actually? I mean, the only ones that i’m aware of are PoMA, AC and Dao Ascension. If there are any other supposed new contemporaries, i haven’t really seen them reach a level where they’d get a mention. What are those numerous new challengers?

There’s Murim Dragon (not sure if cultivation, but same vibe), Eternal Ascension (no longer being worked on using ChoiceScript), Transcended Awakening (also same vibe). In cogdemos there’s The Azure Dragon’s Legacy (no WIP thread as of now). I’d argue some of them just have the vibe, like they’re set in the same martial arts world like POMA, etc. Admittedly, I’m not super familiar with the genre, but these are what came to mind. And yes, they’re not really talked about as much as POMA and Dao.
