Starways Saga (WIP) ~300k words (Updated 4/9/2025)

I’m really sorry this is happening. Ever since my first fix, I haven’t had this problem. I’m continuing to try to tweak things. Anyone else have this problem?

I picked up from my last save which was after where they are and seems to be fine. Will try to check later on from a fresh start to see if i encounter there issue. Yet i find it strange problem to have.

You’re writing a space opera. There must be sexy blue-skinned aliens who need to be taught this Earth thing called kissing. It’s the law!

Am I the only one who keeps reading the title as “Stairways saga” and getting confused?

Stats Changes
I’ve started work on the next part of the Navy path. I hope to have something substantial for you by the end of November. But, I’ve decided to shift focus for a little time to change up the stats system in the game.
Instead of having numbered stats (eg, Charisma: 40), I’ve decided to implement a perks system. Throughout the game you will be able to earn a variety of perks through your choices. These perks will not only help you by presenting better choices in high impact situations but will present more flavorful dialog as you move through the story. Hopefully this will make your choices feel more impactful and make for more complete characters. I think this change will make stats much more streamlined and simpler. Instead of a number check, you simply have the skill perk or you don’t.

Each path will yield unique perks, also how you choose to approach a situation will earn different perks. For example the Merchant Path will grant the Well Traveled Perk. Having traveled to every sector and seen so many worlds and stations, you’re much better informed about the galaxy, you can fit in an get by pretty much anywhere. This could be very useful for blending in, making conversation with and getting information from a dock worker, etc.

Meanwhile on the Navy Path you’ll earn the Officer perk. You stand up straight, you have perfect posture and know how to maintain respect. People in authority will easily trust someone with your background. You may not gain the trust of a lowly dock worker, but you may just earn a meeting with the governor of the station.

I’ll let you know when these changes have been fully implemented. Shouldn’t take too long. Any questions or concerns about this change let me know.
Thanks!

Perk System Implemented
All right I’ve completed the changeover to the perk system. Let me know if you find any bugs or errors brought on by the new changes.

If you replay the game and don’t feel that big of a change, don’t worry. The perk system will be more impactful in the upcoming content and will be a huge part of the third act when you finally buy your own starship and set off on your adventures. I can also promise the merchant path in the final product will be different and much improved from what it is now. But my primary focus is forging ahead and at least completing a first draft of each path before I go back to finely tune them.

Let me know what you think about this change. I’m always eager to hear feedback. Always feel free to post a comment or question about anything.
Thanks again!

Update Imminent
It’s been a bit of a hectic November. Happy Thanksgiving to all that celebrate. Just wanted to update you about my progress on the next update. It’s close to done, but still has the final push left. Wrapping up your time at basic training and playing around with the new perks has been a lot fun. I look forward to finishing it and putting it out for you to experience. I’ll probably have it done in the next week to ten days. So make sure your best clothes are dry cleaned and ready for that. As always, feel free to reach out with any questions or feedback you have.

Thanks again! Enjoy the holiday and the time off if you get it! Drink a glass of Vermentino for me!
Cheers!

19k Words Navy Path Update
Here we go! This update encompasses the end of your time at Fort O’Brien and competing basic training. Gain some new skills and run though some scenarios in the simulation dome. Say goodbye to Sergeant Wilks, Sergeant Nishi, Recruit Moss and others you’ve met thus far. But fear not, your core group of friends will be with you for the next part of your journey: the officer’s academy.
The next update will see you at the academy where you will learn more skills and pick your specialization. Expect to see that in early 2025 (jesus where does the time go?).

Let me know what you think about the update. Feedback is always welcome and pointing out any bugs or errors you find is always very helpful.

Thanks again for your continued interest and support!

So the pilot and bridge crew subpaths seem like the normal ones you’ll see in a Sci Fi navy, but marines? Their mostly ground pounders, wonder what your going to due with them sense their more action oriented

Marines serve as the main ground force of the Navy. They’re also deployed in a security capacity in fleets, ports and bases.
