Sense & Sorcery (WIP, Working Title, Gender Locked Female)

This a complex question for me.

Simply put: I put interactivity above all because I am a playing a game where I can choose my own adventure. I dislike when CYOA games are completely linear with minimal interaction. In a lot of my projects, players seldom go 1-2 pages without making a choice that reflects on their current scene, character relationships, or future and near-future scenes.

That said, my standard can be very challenging for authors, especially those who prefer writing more so gaming. For this, I loosen up on my own desires, but I still can only tolerate a lack of interaction up until a certain point.

Interaction to me in a less intense way is the ability to have my actions change a scene. This can mean my dress type adds flavor text or what bath water I like gets referenced. In more extreme cases, I love it when I can select an option and start a branching path that goes back to the main story.

If I go 4-7 pages turns or Next button clicks without a choice that reflects on the story or page… I do like this charming game, so I’ll keep reading updates, but replaying will become very difficult.

If interaction is difficult, I would absolutely prefer to read a companion novel! I have no problem with the lack of interaction in books.

Thanks for the quick feedback myeraland – and no fear on this. In general, I agree with this 100%. Sad to say, but there is more than one game (and sometimes well reviewed games at that) where i had to give up on it as it was buried under an endless linear text wall. While I’d agree that everyone’s tastes are different and there is room in the community for many different sorts of games, these games with less choices wouldn’t be my cup of tea to play or make, on average. These polls are only for times when I have a huge time crunch but would still like to get you guys some progress. It will not represent my standards for how to proceed in the genral.

Though I 'd still be curious for everyone’s thoughts none-the-less, for those that have time to vote. If not, no pressure. As said in the prior post, progress continues, but I am a bit concerned on how small this coming update may seem after such a huge amount of time to wait, and i want to try to give the group enough content – both in quality and content – to be worth the while.

Just a quick note that I am going to revise my plan – I will now aim to post most of the coming update to the test game file by the end of the month and I will reshare the link for the test game once I have done so in case anyone wants to try most of the new stuff out sooner rather than later, however, I will move the full update (as much as it is, anyways) to the main game files for sometime in September rather than by the end of august. Lost a few more days to sickness, family stuff, work, and sometimes lack of energy, so just really need more time to make the update enough in my opinion . . . progress has continued, and while I will freely admit that some of this is probably not my best writing, I think a few of the scenes turned out fairly well.

I shall aim to post again once I have the test game ready for people to try out by the end of this month, and then I will post yet again when the main update is finally posted sometime in september.

Hey, I’m really excited to dive into this game! Do you have any lists or descriptions of the romance options? I assume you do not have a tumblr or similar? I saw you no longer have a Patreon.

Thanks!

Thank you! I really appreciate the enthusiasm for my WIP. Sorry it took me a while to reply . . .See below for more RO info. Sorry, no tumblr or anything like that at present. Maybe someday, but at present I’m kind of social mediaed out for multiple reasons.

Regarding ROs

So, for the ROs, I do want to caution that even the ones that are the most far along still have a long way to go before their paths will really seem all there. This is even with the coming update added on – but that said, at present, I think the most content can be reflected for the following ROs:

Note: Some spoilers in the following.

-Mr Northwood: A rebellious family thrall that will test the prots standing and patience, but may well reveal aspects to her social world she has never imagined.

-Duke Harold Drearing: The Duke-- He comes in one of two opposing personality types and may just be the prots chance to climb the social ladder to a better life of consequence. But pursuing the duke may have costs she never imagined.

-Cousin Mordred: The socially awkward cousin-- (Note: as its the regency cousin marriages are so a thing) A shabby sorcerer and more full of puff than pomp, being married to her cousin may seem the worst possible outcome for the prot . .. but perhaps the prots cousin has a few secrets all of his own, after all.

-Lord/Lady Wanderflame: The mysterious and infamous childhood friend-- the prot’s nightmares are still haunted by the specter of her old childhood friend and what happened. Yet, now this same friend has returned to her life in a way that she likely never imagined, and sorting the matter out just might mean the end of her family’s prospects or the start of a new and shocking adventure.

-Lady Sorcerer Whiserie:The cursed long time friend-- Lady Whiseries has led a life of flight from a curse that follows her whereever she goes; so it is that more often than not she has only been able to communicate with her friend via letters. Yet now they at last find themselves in the same realm – its a chance for their friendship to evolve and perhaps for something far more than friendship. However, the curse isn’t the only thing that will stand in the way.

-Lord Soldier Sorcerer Whiseries: Brother of a long time friend and a soldier besides, he lives a life of authority and danger. While his regiment has magic to keep the curse at bay at least from himself and he has always secretly had a quiet crush on his sister’s dear old friend, there is a chance brigands and misunderstandings may well stand in the way.

-A half-incubus Thief-taker: While he has long tried to keep his particular gift under restraint, his latest assignment has required him to rely on it more than he would like. However, each time he uses the gift it becomes a little harder for him to practise restraint. When a certain lady sorceress stands in his way and stopping a particularly dangerous band of brigands, he may just need all the innate magic at hand – regardless of the cost. However, will the cost be his very own soul and the freedom of the ladies of the realm?

-Ms. Faust: Assigned as a servent-thrall to the protaganist, she is the daughter of the protaganists old nurse. However, while she seems simple mannered and quiet enough, there is a a fire waiting under the surface that is certain to burn.

-Gleheir and Itheraine; A pair of fey: They have watched the prot and her family in secret for so very long, yet now with their mistresses grand game at long last in play, will they truly be able to stand idle, or have they grown to feel attached to a certain sorceress? Cruel and capricious by nature, can their hearts be turned to truly contemplate love or is this beyond their capacity?

-Lord Red: When the protaganist has been perceived to have overstepped to far her uncle decides its time to handle her once and for all and at the same time fullfill an alliance and a promise with the stately Lord Red. While it may seem the start of a life of wealth and regard, it is also a life haunted by the specter of both the past and the bloody future . . . is this path only a way towards a bad ending, or might it be the true path for hope for a lady sorceress after all?

-Lady Swein: A lady-sorceress just like our heroine, she has a little secret that is threatening to come out. And while she may claim friendship with our heroine, this may well be a friendship that will drag both far against the law and civilized society . . .

-Many others with tiny sections, such as some barbarians that come from another world in the mist, ruin delvers, monster hunters, the aforementioned brigands, eidolons.

Once more, heavy emphasis on none of these RO paths being anywhere near complete. Ah . . . I really wish these were going faster as well. While the coming update will have some progress on many of these, anticipate small progress as in a few scenes that will advance that RO path under the correct circumstances.

No posting yet for either test game or the actual game, but I’ll try to press hard this week to make progress one way or another.

So I’m sorry to say I will most likely shove the posting to the test game variant and sharing the link for the test game out another week – might be sooner, but I need to bridge a few sections and there’s a few other things I want to do before I share it, and I really have little time this weekend for it. However, next week, barring some sort of emergency, I should have a descent amount of free time and will retry for it then.

Upon posting to the test variant and sharing the link for that, i will then try to run a few test games myself and do further bug testing / grammar & spelling fixing, / etc. I will also try to halt adding any new variables or changes to startup so test games will be relatively stable. That stipulation will hold for the test game until I post the update to the main game files on COGdemos, at which time I will reserve the right to make changes to startup and the variables for the game, which will make the test game less functional.

As I’ve kind of hinted at earlier, this probably won’t be as large or complete an update as I’d have hoped. Yes, there will be progress and plenty of new scenes to explore – but, there is so much more that really needs to be done to make the game, and even chapters, feel complete. Can never say for sure, but probably the update after this one will be centered on filling in gap sections and such.

So, in conclusion, no test game variant yet or likely by Monday, but we are going to aim for it by the sunday following this one (i.e September sixth). Thank you again for your patience and my appologies on the repeated delays.

So, first off – here is the link for the test game variant → Link to Test Game Variant

As this is the test game only, there may be some revisions at some further adjustments, but at present the new sections has this for the change log:

Change Log for new stuff

Update Version: In Progress

-Added in a short scene in chapter 11 where the prot and her sisters give Mera advice on what is the best trait for a young woman. This will become more important as the plot moves on in a few chapters.
-Added in a short scene in chapter 11 to help set the tone and scene as the prot’s party enters the misty trail. Some family interplay.
-Various typos, spelling errors, and grammar faux pas fixed — as always, plenty more to address.
-Added a scene where you can either haggle with the innkeeper or not haggle on the prices of the rooms in chapter 4 evil_inn scenes.
-Added various scenes for chapter 4 evil_inn plot arc; you can now wander around the inn and have various conversations and interactions with the guests and your family and company.
-Added a division point scene where one of your sisters will move in with you for the chapter 4 evil inn plot arc; this scene serves as a bridge between the first third of this plot arc and the next third.
-Numerous other scenes added into the Chapter 4 Evil Inn path, to many to individually list. Honestly this chapter has become as large and larger than many games at this point. Here’s hoping people like it!
-Added in sorority/loyalty points for some key NPCs. In mid and late game this will allow special diologues and actions and be awarded any time you end a chapter with a relationship > 90 for a given NPC. Some interactions here and there in earlier chapters may also decrement or increment these sorority/loyalty points.
-Added in vars for key NPCs for the Evil Inn chapter 4 plot arc.
-Added in personality points and some ancillary points related to other prot dimensions such as decorum and consequence. While these for the most point won’t be leaned into all that hard in the early sections of the game, I will use them mid game onwards pretty heavily. Used these in some of my other projects , namely AtW and CC, and feel this system is pretty strong and a good model for real life.
-Added in adjudication of the personality and ancillary points in a few key places such as chapter 3 after the personality resolution scene, chapter 6 after the first leveling event, and then a couple key areas; idea is that the player and prot should have enough points to be able to try to chart a path and have her personality felt, but not so much that there will never be any strain or effect felt, a balance.
-Was shocked and horrified to see that Lord Red never had sufficient variables added; for such an important NPC he needed that, so he now has a suitable assortment of variables, as will a very important character linked to him which I can’t discuss further due to spoilers.
-Added in some minor adjustments to prior chapters to accomadate some of the new vars.
-Added in some new scenes for chapter 14, wherein the prot’s uncle’s maid gives a report on the prot to her uncle, and then a scene where the prot meets with first her uncle and then his selected betrothed for her, Lord Red. This then now flows naturally to the Stara scene designed in a prior update. Sandbox section for this chapter still needs to be added. Also of note, the number of days the prot will have as free play before she must either agree to marry the man her uncle selected or tell him who she will marry now will be set depending on prior actions with the prot’s uncle and his maid. Small things here can make a big difference, albeit uncle Damian is very capricious and irascible.
-Added in more for the prot’s introduction in chapter 6; that particular scene is about half done to a third done now, but I still need to add on a bit more to conclude it one way or another.
-Added in a couple files to bridge between core game and the excerpts.
-Added in a good amount of content for the rough road chapter 4 section, though more still be added yet.
-Added in for the prot’s introduction chapter in chap 6 a new scene with Ietherain the fey woman. Little menace, little teasing, little dancing. Hopefully enough to build towards the next RO scene on her path.
-Added in for the prot’s introduction chapter in chap 6 a short scene with Mr. Northwood, some thralls, and perhaps a promise.
-Added in ch 14 scene with Ravana where the two can explore either accepting their mutal situations or perhaps pursuing some alternatives.
-Added in ch 14 scene wtih Ravana where the prot may finally gain a sort of invitiation to vist the Wanderflame estate.
-Added in ch 14 a scene where cousin Mordred has a few dangerous ideas.
-Added in ch 14 a scene where Stara may try to be helpful (or not).
-Added in ch 14 a scene where Lady Whiserie comes over to visit the prot. This scene can only be triggered if the prot prefers women. It eplores a few plot points and may advance, modulate, or end the prots friendship and/or relationship with Lady Whiserie, depending upon prior choices and the choices of this scene. It ends with a visit from cousin Mordred, which may explore his RO options for both the prot and lady W potentially..
-Added in ch 14 a series of scenes where the prot may initially try and then finally succeed at visting the infamous Wanderflame. This small little dinner party with the prot, her sister, and Wanderflame may have some small consequences both for the Wanderflame path and Ravana’s ways in this game. In order to see these scenes the prot must either go through a series of trials to get admitance to the Wanderflame estate and actually meet thee Wanderflame, or she must get an invite from her sister Ravana.
-Added in ch 14 a series of scenes with the fey lady Iethraine. Scenes will play out slightly different depending on current rel and appeal scores and if she can be a potential prospect. Depending on how the scenes play out, towards the end the prot may get a chance to complete Eilereen’s quest regarding the three-eyed wolves, though I will state I made that last scene a little abreivated due to time constraints.
-Added in ch 14 a rather short Sarah Swein scene. In order to trigger this scene you must stay home in the morning, prefer women, and have a high enough rel or appeal score.
-Added in ch 14 a short scene where on her promenade the prot may encounter the duke (5%) chance. Scene may be played only once, but small advancement on that RO if you play your cards right.
-Added in ch 14 a short scene where on her promeande the prot may encounter the duke’s sister Merideth (5%) chance. As with duke scene, only one go on it, but may have small advancement on RO path again.
-Added in ch 14 a short scene where on her promenade the prot may encounter the duke’s younger sister Thera (5%) chance and be informed of a vision and have a very small advancement on that RO path.
-Added in ch 14 a very short scene where on her promenade the prot may encounter Sarah Swein and her group (5%) chance.
-Added in ch 14 a short scene where the prot may encounter the thief-taker Justin Devers and a group of soldiers (5%) chance.
-Added in ch 14 a very short scene where on her promeande the prot may encounter the fey Gleheir. May cause her a quick spat of trouble.
-Added in ch 14 a short scene where on her promenade the prot may encounter Lord Whiserie (5% chance).
-Added in some ch 7 scenes; one where an antagonistic incident may lead into a very brief touch of romance, depending on the prots prior actions and rel/appeal scores. May also culminate in a more metaphysical scene instead, depending, i.e. the spirit within plot. Either way, these scenes will flowm into a philosophical bridge scene which then flows into the baroness encounter scene.
-Added in ch 14 scenes where prot may go to visit Lord Red her intended.
-Added in vars for Lord Red’s daughter. Won’t be used until future chapters, potentially.
-Started to add in ch 14 scene where Lord Red and his hunting trope can be encountered on the misty trails; this scene is only started, as I didn’t have time to finish it. Will add onto it probably next update beyond this one.
-Tried to add in bridges and such for chapter 14; as a lot is incomplete, this was rather a hodge podge, but hope it flows well enough to still be played. More incomplete than complete though. Also, I should note if conditionals are wrong this may mean missed scenes as well. Despite that, hope players find something to enjoy in there – some of these scenes I am rather proud of. In a future update I’ll add more to this chapter, obviously.
-Added some very minor bridges and tweeks to chapter 15; as I didn’t have much to really advance this chapter except in a truly negligible way, don’t expect much extra for this chapter vs last time. Hopefully next update again, but we shall see.
-Finished bridging a few new scenes for chapter 11, wherein the prot can have a brief and psuedo-romantic or even teasing encounter with either Monique, Gary (both rogues), Elerin, or Lysik (mist-realm barbarians), or Lord Whiserie. These are rather brief, but should add to their routes. These now all should bridge back in, and flow into the Mera key trait choice scene.
-Adjusted a couple minor things in chapter 10, such as if you and Sarah share a kiss it will now tag her as your first kiss and add a short bit of special text, and added some very tiny amount of bridging to make adding to this chapter easier in the future.
-In chapter 8 some flags were adjusted to better handle the thief-taker enthrallment/enrapturement scene. Technically, if the prot is hit with the half-incubus’s aura in full, she is enraptured, and not entrhalled, but I now trip both flags as some checks later on falsely considered it enthrallment instead of enrapturement. Had wished to add an alternative route for this chapter for players and prots that really don’t want to go on the little fatefful walk Morgan, but didn’t have enough time to do it. Possibly in a future update. This is mostly to be added to cut down likelyhood of the enrapturement as right now it is probalby more likely than not, and I’d like this to be maybe around a 25% possibility than a near certainity. Some other very minor adjustments for this chapter.
-Some minor adustments in chapter 6, to help bridge a few things that were half started.
-Rebridged excerpts back to the main game, though some of this was kind of messely done. Hoping to finish these excerpts next update, one way or another, though that may be a while.

Now, summary of this is that there is of course the addition of the excerpt sections and a little bit more on that but nothing complete yet, a few minor additions to some sections such as the Introduction Ceremony, a few tweaks here and there, and a good number of additions to the various RO paths . . . but at present some of these are gate guarded by rel / appeal scores, other scores, or past choices, or, dumb luck; I rather think some of this will still feel rather bare bones and I realize some of the chapters need very much more content, both in terms of ROs and others . . . yet we shall get there in time.

Just not with this update.

Though still . . .

Granted, one must scratch off some of this due to word rep, the alt starts, poor coding, and the linear section, but rather proud and pleased we are creeping towards the 800k mark. In short, the game comes along little by little.

In any event, I am probably going to take a little time off as the last week has been a bit of a marathon getting this going to even the modest extent that it has. Today I think I was about 13 hours of work on all this, which on one hand is great, but the real world calls, as it always does, and to much screen time requires a ton of constitution saves. Erg, yes . . . but after a suitable time I shall dive back in and continue to edit and bug test, etc. Once I feel it reaches a suitable level of good enoughness, I shall post it to the main game files on COGdemos and post here. Upon doing that I shall consider it fair game to resume adding new vars and such to the test game, etc.

Till then . . .

P.S. I will say it was a nice capstone that there seemed to be some sort of Jane Austen Marathon on PBS today, so I totally had that going to give me some additional energies to get this going.

Please take care of yourself too. Thank you for the update!

Woah. 800000 is seriously impressive. Congratulations!

Replaying again is enjoyable. I really like the cheat menu as the breadth of character variation takes a while. I really missed this charming again. I have to do so a bit at a time. Thanks again @Zodac01

thank you myeraland!

In today’s news, I am happy to say I now seem able to fix the image files for the game. Won’t have time to fix them all just now, but before the update to the main game variant on COGdemos I intend to find and fix all of these. Other than that, the grammar and bug fixing continues on, little by little. While no one should expect perfection by the time of the update, I will write that a large number have now been cleared.

Quick Note: I had to update startup for the test game variant in order to hopefully fix the images. I am uncertain as to whether this will trigger the need for new games or not. My apologies if it does. I am going to try to lay off of the startup file for the test game variant hereon out, as those images in that file are fixed now.

So, at long last I have posted the update. Please refer to either the actual change log within the game’s stat screen or a couple posts back for a full listing of all additions and changes, but in brief, expect a few scenes for most ROs (though some may be hard to reach and none of them go super far in on that RO path), few more sister scenes, other additions and tweeks here and there, the addition of the excerpt content as far as it is, some fixes to the pics, some edditing, bug fixing, etc. I had originally wanted to do more testing, editing, and bug fixing before posting the update, but for a few reasons (having some computer problems, lots of real-life stuff I need to take care of, thought I had people wait more than long enough) I went ahead and posted the update now rather than latter – yes, there will still be typos/spelling errors/ and perhaps some bugs . . . there are also lots of incomplete sections . . . leaning heavily into thinking on focussing on some of those next . . .

Anyway, I’ll probably do a wrap up post within maybe the next week or two to comment further on a few things and likely future directions for this game and some of my other games. Always the possibility of a hot-fix update, but hopefully not. When I have time, progress will continue on in the test game thread, and I’ll eventually post the link for that to the top of the thread so it’s easier for people to find and follow.

Lastly, I’ll write, if you haven’t played the last update either, I feel like this is finally a pretty decent amount of new content where I’d honestly think it is worth your while. (Unfortunately, as the save game problem is still not resolved, it is likely future updates to start up will eventually wreck saved games, which I hate – but that will not be for a while, I think. Can’t say for sure, but maybe not till next year some time . . .but we will see. If you had played the last update and/or the excerpts . . . well, there is new content, but questionable if it is enough to warrant restarting just yet.

Either way – as always, thank you for your interest in my game. Here’s to the magic of your future journeys – cheers!

So I did just notice a minor problem in start up… as it’s in start up I can’t fix it without destroying everyone’s games, so I’m just going to leave it for now. Referring to the title addendum “test variant”… it is the current real version of the game. Honestly a bit rankled that I missed that, but won’t be fixed until the next update which will probably be a while.

Hope everyone is enjoying the game. Sorry for that little error and any others you may encounter.

Is there currently a path where Lord Red isn’t your only option when 17 days are over??

Some spoilers here . . .

So pulling back the curtain a little, [spoiler] chapter 14 and a lot of the rest of the game (at least as far as the RO paths) is about building momentum, so that when the game is complete enough, prots and players will have many different options, maybe in ch 15, but more likely ch 16, as (again pulling back the curtains a bit) ch 15 will be sort of a crisis decision point chapter - therein, once the game is complete enough, the prot can pursue alternatives both romantic and otherwise . . . But the game is only so far yet. RO paths and other alternatives (some rather extreme) do not go to completion yet. But the initial shove towards the prot having these options or not having them is present in some scenarios, though more to be added, hopefully next update.

So short wrap up answer, at the end of however many days you are allotted by the prots uncle, you should have at least a few alternative options in a future update.

Hope that helps. Sorry they only go so far at this time

Ah thank you! This was most helpful. Another question however, will there be a Wanderflame route?

You’re welcome — and yes, there will be actually at least three Wanderflame routes (one were the prot is WF’s RI, and another where the prot is a sort of tag along to come live on the WF estate while Ravana is the main RI, and a third where both prot and Ravana are RIs for WF). Probably some overflow between these routes, when they are all done someday.

Posted elsewhere, but basically, barring a real world emergency or something along those lines, I think I’ll punch for one more update to “S&S” and then press for an update for “AtW” and maybe one other WIP thereafter … more on that later. Anticipate this update being smaller. I may release a poll as well sometime in the next week or so on something I’ve been pondering.
