Red Flags Romantasy - Fae & Humans (WIP) (4k words)

They’re handsome, they’re rich, they’re red flags maddeningly in love with you. (13k words)

Loosely inspired by Wuthering Heights and the Romantasy genre, you can play as a man, woman, or non-binary fae in this story about obsessive love. There’s no fear of having to romance them, because they’re romancing you!

Set in the realm of the fae, you grew up as the fae-child of a duke, raised in a lonely castle. Your only friends were a scorned prince, and a naughty fae-child your father picked up off the road. You’re eighteen when your brother promises your hand to a duke you’ve never met, setting off this chain of events that’ll lead you to romance or despair.

They’re manipulative, cruel, jealous, controlling, codependent, the list goes on. But at the end of the day this is a love story, right?

—RO’s—

Clement Bellerose, the scorned prince. Hated by everyone around him since birth, you were his only comfort. He was stricken with illness in childhood, and you haven’t seen him in years.

Heath Corbeau, the ill-tempered, ill-natured, fae-child your father picked up off the road. Abandoned by his parents, why does he seek to become them?

Dorian Faintree, a regular human by all counts. His grandfather hunted fae, and he has taken up the mantle. But wait! There’s war on the horizon.

—Warnings, may change later.—

SFW with some mild violence. If you can read Wuthering Heights, you can read this.

Reading this was a trip. I feel like spacing things out and slowing down the pacing would be really good for this story. It’s just that I had no idea who these guys are and they already want me and I already have decisions to make that I felt like I hadn’t had enough information to make. But it was pretty fun to read.

Is it bad that I thought that Heath and Clement are absolutely repulsive? On the flip side, am I insane to think that Dorian is hot for threatening me?

I noticed the spacing issues as well, but I was just so excited to get a working demo out asap

Well, this is red flags the game.

Does this mean everyone in the story is mentally deranged and insane including the MC or its just the main cast?
Anyway, I’ll be catherine and make terrible decision along with multiple misunderstanding that could only be fixed if we actually talk frfr

You can play the MC just as if not more deranged than the rest, or be the only rational one in the room!

this was a very fun read. do you plan to make a tumblr for updates?

Maybe in the future

Wip is now at 7.5k words, and nonbinary option added. I’ll change the post when I can to reflect it.

I also agree that the story could benefit from a slower pacing and more time to get to know the characters. I hope this isn’t offensive but it felt a bit more like a first draft than a demo; you have a structure but not much details. I feel like it definitely has potential though and I do look forward to seeing how you progress.

I am personally a big fan of yandere/red flag tropes so I’m pretty excited about this one!

Thank you for taking your time to comment! I admit I’ve looked through the story and mostly thought it was fine— writing about what I view as “filler”, though I understand it’s just as important as the main plot is not my strong forte.

If you have specific scenes that you think could be expanded on, feel free to say them! And this goes to anyone taking time to read my silly little story.

Progress report: has been slow because of social commitments, but words are still being written.

Actually, I liked this one. The writing has a charming feel to it, and it’s mostly easily to follow. I don’t think I spotted any typos or errors for now.

Granted, every RO is crazy is some form. I’m not sure if my heart can handle it. Other than that, they don’t feel very distinct yet at this part of the story, so I’m not sure who I’ll pick.

Or maybe you could just obediently submit to that arranged marriage? :upside_down_face:

Thank you for the compliments! Unfortunately I won’t be writing a fourth path for the arranged marriage. :joy:

Updated to 13k words. @moderators Sorry if this is the wrong ping, but can you make this post a wiki so I can update wordcount? Thanks!

I’ve been putting off writing the next stage, but I’m finally tackling it again, so expect another update soon.

All male love interests?

Yes. I decided ease of writing over options for ro gender when starting out.

I’m assuming the RO will the be the assertive/dominant ones in the relationships given the theme?

Nope, you can be a red flag later in the planned story. But the ros might come off as more dominant now, in the pre-relationship.

For my part, I think it reads super fast paced when compared with most romance games, but I also enjoyed the lack of filler scenes, my impatient mind was thrilled :joy: if you wouldn’t like to add some, and this is just a suggestion, you could just add some introduction to new scenes, or even titles for us to feel more oriented, and also more dialogue between characters as to get closer to them. It could be the simplest of things, their daily life in between the big events with a pinch of flavor choices.
In my case, I have the opposite problem: I have mostly filler scenes and conversations of my characters without actual plot :joy:
On another note, Heath reminded me (of course, of Heathcliff), but I imagined him just as Cardan from The cruel prince. Amazing. Thank you for sharing this with us!!
