Podcasts for beginners

Hi! As a newcomer to CoG I’ve recently jumped into writing stories in choicescript to test the waters. I’ve always liked writing and fantasy games/RPGs. However I don’t have much proper writing experience so I’m wondering if there are any podcasts you guys can recommend for someone new?

I usually listen to podcasts on spotify when in the car or out and about. But any other sources are fine.

Thanks in advance!

Script Lock is good, it’s specifically about game writing.

Just listened to the latest episode and liked it a lot. Thanks for the tip! Already wrote down a couple of “tips” I picked up from it

Podcasts like ‘Writing Excuses’ are great for learning storytelling and writing techniques, especially for beginners. You might also enjoy ‘Story Grid’ for structured writing advice and ‘Script Lock’ for game writing insights

I second the recommendation for Writing Excuses. Their website has a good guide for where to start, since they’re a long-running podcast with hundreds of episodes. I refer back to their episode on intrigue pretty often.

Helping Writers Become Authors is another favorite of mine, and another long-runner. Her website also has a friendly Start Here! link. I wish I’d had this episode on endings before I wrote mine, for example.

Looking at my various apps, I also see names like Mythcreants, Worldbuilding for Masochists, Grammar Girl, and How Story Works. Admittedly, I listen to these less often, especially since I don’t commute every day, as I used to.

Thanks for sharing these. I’ll check out Helping Writers Become Authors and the Start Here! guides—they sound really useful. I’ve heard of Mythcreants before, so I’ll give it a try too.

Welcome to the CoG world! For writing podcasts, check out Writing Excuses, it’s short, snappy, and packed with tips. The Creative Penn is also great for indie writers. And if you’re into fantasy, Worldbuilding for Masochists is a fun listen. Happy writing (and driving)!

Caveats:
1: I know that I’m late to this, so apologies. Never saw it go by before.
2: I come from the literature side of the media production pond, so YMMV on some of these suggestions.

That out of the way, for stuff that’s on Spotify specifically, I like No Write Way. It’s not as crunchy or in the weeds as some, but it is interesting, easy listening writing content.

The Fantasy Writer’s Toolshed is one that, IMO, you need to be a little pickier with and find the episodes in their catalog that are going to speak to you, but when one hits, it really hits.

If you find yourself with some time on YouTube, I think the GDC Vault is invaluable for game writers. A lot of it, obviously, is going to apply mostly to video games, not text-based games, but there’s a lot of good stuff in there regardless, and 9 years of content saved.

Nice recommendations! No Write Way sounds like a chill listen, and I love the idea of cherry-picking Fantasy Writer’s Tool-shed episodes for the real gems. And yeah, the GDC Vault is a goldmine, even if it’s game-focused, there’s so much crossover for storytelling in general. Solid picks!
