I have two questions:

Are there ways to use persistent variables aside from achievements? I want to give readers feedback on how much of the total story they’ve seen and I want them to retain their progress even if they restart the game.

Are there any side effects to initializing too many variables in the startup.txt? I tried 1500+ in a test run on my pc and didn’t notice any significant slowness or other problems, but maybe things are different when people play it over the web or on other platforms.
