Persistent Variables?

I have two questions:

  1. Are there ways to use persistent variables aside from achievements? I want to give readers feedback on how much of the total story they’ve seen and I want them to retain their progress even if they restart the game.

  2. Are there any side effects to initializing too many variables in the startup.txt? I tried 1500+ in a test run on my pc and didn’t notice any significant slowness or other problems, but maybe things are different when people play it over the web or on other platforms.

@Juxtapistion On 1, I’m not really sure of, but I don’t think there is any way to keep progress after a restart. On 2, I believe it’s a matter of device memory since CS games are also played on mobile devices, but I’m pretty sure you would sooner run into an issue of you being able to keep track of that many variables long before it effected device performance.
