Patchwerks (WIP, 225k words) - Project in memory of Eiwynn

Hi all,

We have created this thread to release Patchwerks, by @Eiwynn . Eiwynn contributed greatly to this community and was a friend to many of us. To this day, her presence and encouragement is deeply missed.

Caitlin, Eiwynn’s spouse, expressed her support for having the latest draft of Patchwerks released. We have set up this WIP thread in memory of her work and her contributions to this community.

CoGDemos

In Patchwerks: The Awakening you play as a newly awakened supernatural being with lots of questions but no answers.

Embark on a journey of self-discovery as you navigate the magical yet horrific world you find yourself in. You’ll meet characters that you can befriend and even spark a romance with. You’ll work your way through encounters with these companions as you journey through the Under City and its environs.

Will you use your supernatural power to assist your companions? Will you hinder them or even challenge them? Make your way to the Parlor House, a sanctuary in the Hell’s Half Acre District of the Under City and change your fate.

Patchwerks: The Awakening is a thrilling interactive gothic-horror fantasy set in a Victorian Age magical realm by Eiwynn, where your choices control the story. It’s entirely text-based—without animations or sound effects—and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

This is the first part of a five part story and it introduces you to the Patchwerks storyverse, its inhabitants and the role you are meant to play within it.

Patchwerks: The Awakening offers an adventure with twists and turns that will allow you to influence the world you find yourself in using attributes and skills you develop along the way.

∙ Play as male, female or nonbinary, gay, straight, bi, or asexual.
∙ Meet a cast of dynamic characters that grow and develop alongside you.
∙ Embrace your companions, their causes and their endeavors … or don’t, It’s up to you.
∙ Approach events based on how you develop your character throughout the story.
∙ Form romantic relationships with one of six other characters.

Will you end up being a savior to souls crying out for you and your help, or will you damn them to an eternity of chaos and madness?

The choices are yours as you define your character within the complex social fabric found within Patchwerks.

Would you like to leave up the largely unedited project on CoGdemos, as a tribute to her original work and writing, or would you be interested in helping to finish her story? Feel free to share your thoughts below and note that there is no wrong answer.

If you have any feedback or comments about this WIP, please feel free to voice them here as well.

Fantastic tribute, Vance and Caitlin. I didn’t know Eiwyn well, but she was the beating heart of these forums. Her spirit and legacy are an inseparable part of this place still. This is entirely appropriate. I commend you, and everyone who helped you, for putting Patchwerks back where it belongs. It would be great to see it fully realised and released.

I can only offer my support, as I am embroiled in my own project, but you have it completely.

This is a heartwarming and touching action. I joined after her passing, but her presence and positivity are woven throughout this forum. Thank you for setting up this thread.

I playtested some of this and had ideas bounced off me, and it is a shame she isn’t here to complete it.

I was honored to be one of her testers a few months before she died. I can be a tough critic, but Brittany was so wonderfully appreciative of everything I had to say. I’m sorry I got to work with her only once, but I would love to make myself useful to her friends who are completing her work in her memory.

Very good , good tribute to Eiwynn. This story feels like an anime(donghua) called “Lord of The Mysteries”

I am of the mind that leaving it unfinished would be disagreeable. She began a story, her writing is there and she set out with a desire to create something for people to enjoy. Leaving her work unfinished would be contrary to that goal, even if the story she intended isn’t read, I believe it would be a tribute to her memory to use her beginning as a prompt and giving it an ending. I didn’t know her personally, but I think it would honor her best to give her story AN ending. With all the abandon WIPs out there, I can’t imagine someone wanting their work to be added to that list in death. Her story deserves to be finished and have an ending, even if it isn’t the ending she would’ve written herself.

My thoughts are with her friends and wife, either way.

As far as I can really remember, in one of the threads about Eiwynn’s passing that finishing the game in her memory was suggested.

I’d like to see that happen eventually as I’m sure she would want that.

Vance has been a real mensch for pursuing this so long, and whatever form it ultimately takes, it’ll be due in no small part to his tireless efforts.

I think having this up is a nice Tribute to Eiwynn and everything she did around here. It’s lovely to see so many people already getting behind it :two_hearts:

Also, thanks to Caitlin and the many others involved in bringing this game back.
