Officer of the Fleet (WIP)(~170k words)(Major Update 11/8/25)

You only see the Admiral in Chapter 3 if you’re his kid. Otherwise you’ll meet him a little bit later on.

Biological or Adopted?

Hey all, I thought I’d get in the habit of giving you monthly updates about how things are going with Officer of the Fleet and the progress being made. So with this being the 1st of August, here goes.

July was pretty productive, I made a good bit of progress and Chapter 3 is coming along nicely. I’d guess its still only about halfway done but it’s sitting at just under 41,000 words, which will likely make it the largest chapter so far when completed. For reference, Chapter 1 stands at 28k and Chapter 2 at 59k. This means you probably won’t see Chapter 3 this month, but hopefully will have it before pumpkin spice lattes and spooky season.

As always, the continued support and interest in this little WIP of mine is still deeply touching. I smile every time I get a notification about a new comment or like. You are all the best, and thank you for your patience and continued interest!

Only for that smile to twist into an expression of horror and confusion to see it is yet another comment about sleeping with a raptor.

Love the update, though!

Will there be a money system like Infinity Sea Saga?

That’s a good question, and something I’ve been thinking about quite a bit actually. I like the monetary aspect in the Infinity Saga and other interactive fiction as it adds another layer of choice and decisions. The fact is that I’m not really sure it works in this setting. You’re not exactly looting enemy camps or paying ransoms with the Enemy. So outside of buying yourself a nice space condo somewhere I really don’t see a point in adding it.

Short answer: Probably not. Long answer: Maybe if I see a use for it or it naturally fits into the narrative somehow I might add it. We’ll see.

This is a Sci-Fi theme, so there should be looting involved as much as a Medieval Theme, looting enemy ships or enemy bases, there are a lot of loot and valuables anyone can get. Starfield of Bethesda should be an example of this, especially with the Crimson Fleet Storyline.

As for the latter, ransoming should be the same, it is just harder to pull off than in Infinity Sea Saga, where there is a lot of advanced technology that can allow the enemy to find and rescue their important figure easier.

Maybe in earlier chapters, aside from buying special weapons, armor, favors, and mercenaries (If it is allowed). But in later chapters, where the MC might have enough influence and power, and has a high enough rank and reputation to be given command of a fleet, from a small one, to the largest fleet. Money becomes useful later on, like fleet upgrades, hiring fleet groups or buying ships (Like Fighter Ships, Battleships, Dreadnaughts, the list goes on) to expand the MC’s Fleet Size, possibly bribing (Yes, even in this game, there might be some amount of bribing involved, either from the MC or other characters.), upgrading the flagship, the list might go on.

There are ways the MC can gain money in this game aside from looting and ransoming, there are bribes the MC can take in exchange for favors, there are missions that give money as a reward like most RPG Games, there are favors the MC can use to gain more money, and there is the ranking system, like the Infinity Sea Saga, the higher the MC’s Rank, the higher the income. Ensign should give out a small income, while the Grand Admiral should give out a massive income.

Looting might take place, bribes or shady dealings as well, and there will be instances where taking a ship rather than destroying it will be of great use. That said, as opposed to older historical time periods and things like the Infinity Sea Saga, an officer doesn’t really get monetary compensation for such actions. They may be rewarded with regard to rank or prestige but it’s not like modern day generals or admirals get cash bonuses when they successfully perform their job. You’re a member of a respectable modern military organization, not a mercenary.

That said, upgrading your fleet will definitely come in to play later but that will be based upon your previous success (or failure) and the reputation you have fostered. In that way your reputation acts as a kind of currency and serves a similar purpose narratively. I think this is much more realistic as the cost of a starship would far exceed any single person’s salary by a tremendous amount. Using money to supplement your command in something like Sabers of Infinity makes a lot of sense as you can buy your troop a dozen or so muskets for relatively little money, buying or upgrading a starship worth billions of dollars is a little bit harder. Looking to history, people like Nimitz weren’t building and commissioning new battleships with their personal salary, they were proving themselves capable and being given more responsibilities as a result.

I’m not dismissing the idea entirely, but if I do implement a money mechanic I think it will serve a purpose not directly tied to your command.

Hypothetically speaking, capturing enemy equipment or ships would allow us to equip our own men with it, or will the government take it from us and instead just give us and our men some rewards whether its in rank or accolades?

I think taking a ship from the enemy depends on who it is; they could provide us with unlockable prototype weapons as we attempt to reverse engineer it.

Or maybe we can find dark secrets.

Seizing, utilizing, and studying Enemy vessels and tech are all in the cards.

Maybe add a tech tree similar to Stellaris? That would be cool. Retrofitting upgrades to our fleet as we see fit.

A tech tree, while cool, might be a little ambitious. I am after all only one person with dreams of finishing this thing in a relatively reasonable time frame. That said, I don’t want to overpromise but various types of upgrades should make an appearance.

So hypothetically could I make a flotilla made entirely of enemy vessels

Probably not entirely but the idea is to certainly allow for significant augmentation.

So hypothetically could i have a flotilla made of 1 earthian ship and the rest are all enemy vessels?

Just a question: are we the very first student who can remain undefeated in the battle simulation if we defeated a certain somebody in the academy’s history?
