New Heart's Choice Game! "Dawnfall" by RoAnna Sylver

Just started playing it, is Averis in love with Zenith or just friendship?

From what I gathered when playing is that Averis and Zenith were unofficially together or rode the line between lovers and friends (but it seems everyone’s on that line for a hot second) and hadn’t started an ā€˜official’ relationship due to the distance between them until Zenith got hurt and everyone was back together. Then again that might change depending on if you ask Zenith or Averis to be monogamous – I hadn’t tried asking either of them that tho…

I could be very wrong tho lol

Edited: Fixed spelling (hopefully) and tried to make everything make better sense – I’m also on mobile so I apologize.

Thank you! I don’t really like to romance characters who are in love or interested in someone else.
It makes me feel like a couldhavemayhavehomewrecker.

People already said it, but I also think it’s kinda unfair to people interested in romancing guyso put all male ROs in as poly relationship options. Sure it’s nice that polyamory gets representation, but there are people who prefer monogamy and I think there is nothing wrong with either form as long all parties consent to it. Imo in this game the representation of polyamory might have been taken a bit too far, to use a Hungarian idiom I’d say the author ā€œfell off the other side of the horseā€ (that means they took it too far).

I, personally, don’t think the polyamory was taken too far, but the advertisement for the game doesn’t seem quite right then again that’s just me.

This game definitely seems to be poly-oriented (which I LOVED don’t get me wrong), but the idea of monogamy in this game seems to be either date the Pirate Queen or break up an established couple (please correct me if I’m wrong), which is a untouched territory for me so I was mostly… railroaded? Left without a choice? to romance everyone with polyamorous intent – but I went into the game with the intent to poly Averis and Zenith so… not a huge deal for me.

Then again the only character I tried to romance monogamously was Oz and… that didn’t feel right because he was (and is) with Rune. He mentions not being able to fully move on from Rune, which I get but I felt awful trying to romance him when he really didn’t seem super interested. If I had gotten to know Rune better, I would have been 210% down to enter a poly with both of them but ya know – winks in Rune spoilers

//on mobile again, I’m sorry for any mistakes!!

We can all agree to disagree on this, I think. This is a game where the MC joins a crew that is predominantly a polycule. Some people don’t want to read polyamory, others do. There are so few games with polyamorous options, let alone ones with options. This is clearly written to cater to polyamorous people, and I don’t think we should talk as if that’s somehow a detriment to the game just because it may not be your cup of tea!

I do agree that maybe that means the advertising needs to be a little more direct about the poly focus.

Also, @ClamoribusRogamina, why do you say that Oz didn’t seem romantically interested in you? I just did his route, and he seemed absolutely smitten with the Navigator to me?

This, I no way meant to get into a fight with anyone. I just think the more people state their opinions (not just positive ones, but opinions about why the game might ā€œnot exactly be their cup of teaā€) might help the author to think about their next game. Is it enough for them to please those they did already? Do they want to turn those who criticized something in their realesed work? Do the things the players suggested or complained about make even the least bit of sense? Or is it complately against the author views? Then make their choices about the next project. So in a way criticism can also help an author, as long it does’nt says just ā€œit sucksā€

Ahh I guess it was his moments of hesitance that he seemed to be having (which is understandable). It could be that I’m remembering wrong but it just felt like no matter how smitten he was, he wasn’t really super keen on having a relationship with the/my MC because he was still mourning Rune.

I’ll admit, it was probably me reading too deeply into certain things and it also didn’t help that I felt like an intruder when romancing him because of what happened with Rune. It just didn’t feel quite right to me, I suppose, to romance him when he was still very devistated by everything that had happened.

Don’t get me wrong, I liked romancing him! I just felt… complicated about it. If we had gotten more time to get to know Rune (as others have stated), I probably wouldn’t have felt as bad due to knowing both of them well and figuring out how they both feel about everything. Then again, by that point my MC would be in love with both of them lol.

I hope I didn’t come across as rude! I definitely didn’t mean to imply that anyone here was picking a fight—I was mainly referring to an earlier string of comments that seemed like they were frowning upon polyamory in general. I do 100% agree in the value of letting an author know where things felt ā€œmissedā€ and what not!

Oh, hm!! This is a very big on spoilers, so consider not clicking if you’re not done exploring the story but—did you save Rune? In the beginning he’s definitely mourning losing Rune and their love, but… Rune isn’t dead?? After he gets them back, he’s all-in with the both of you. The only time I personally felt he was hesitant was if you tried to initiate sex with him, and he does cite Rune in that scene but to me that kinda felt more like an aspec thing than anything…

To not always just criticize this game. I for one liked that the MC had more of a supporter role here instead having the plot revolving around them. It’s a nice change sometimes, there is a reason after all why Choice of Alexandria is one of my favorite CoGs.

Ahhhhh!! I just realized I saved Rune when I wasn’t romancing Oz and I think I forgot (like the gremlin I am) to save them when I was – Wow, I feel awful!! I’ll have to replay and make doubly sure that I save Rune! :cold_sweat:

I also never tried to initiate sex with him – I haven’t seen/read any of the character’s sex scenes tbh, but knowing he’s hesitant during that I’ll probably stay away from it.

No more distracted playing for me lol

That’ll do it! But now I’m curious to try his route the way you did to see the difference!

This is actually the game that is bringing me back to Choice of Games in general after a long time of having fallen off due to lack of time. There’s usually not a lot of options for nonbinary PCs or romances and especially polyam or aroace paths, so I was super excited for this one! And it’s not just the first time I got to do a polyam romance but I even had options to pick from, which was utterly delightful!

Overall I do see why someone who is more invested in monogamy might not be the target audience for this one, but the inclusion of Gwen’s romance as a totally monogamous option does offset that a little bit and, overall, I definitely get the impression that this game is most meant to cater to those that don’t often get considered in fiction. So I think that the heavy lean towards polyamorous options was definitely intentional. For me, at least, it’s been my first time feeling like I’ve been seen in a game. I’m only partially through it but the writing is beautiful and all of the character interactions ring really true to me.

I also really enjoy being able to step into a world that already feels built and real, like everyone’s story was already in motion before I came onto the scene, it allows a lot of opportunities for the worldbuilding and character writing to really shine and I’m already deeply invested in all of them. (I’m going for a whole ship collection of mostly same feather and heart star relationships with Gwen as a romantic one and I just know I’m going to play again in different combos after I’m done.)

This is a little late, but congratulations, @RoAnnaSylver! I loved being a beta tester and the completed Dawnfall is on my Steam wishlist! Can’t wait to romance everyone again :two_hearts:

My biggest biggest BIGGEST gripe

You’ve completed a chapter come back in 3 hours.

3 hours later

Page 1 So i went to get lunch and blah blah blah
Page 2: after lunch i took a nap

You’ve completed a chapter come back in 3 hours.

There was literally not figuratively a 2 page chapter.

That sounds more like a bug to me, none of the chapters I’ve completed have been that short - which chapter was it?

It was near the end. I also wasn’t romancing anyone.

That really sounds like a bug. You should have gotten a whole scene with a movie night kind of fun thing. I’ll take a look!
