Can someone explain the rebel and icon stat please
Icon is about being a good role model of conduct, being honorable and behaving. Rebel is being your typical pirate, getting drunk, being a charming scoundrel! So basically Icon would be Alexander and Rebel Nathaniel!
Okay, so I loved this game! It’s actually up there as one of my favorite ChoiceScript games ever!
I’ll admit that the title “A Pirate’s Pleasure” made me think this was going to be more of a guilty-pleasure “beach read” (I still won’t tell my partner what the actual title is), but I was dead wrong, lol!
The prose and world-building of this game is honestly breathtaking. The writing and lush turns of phrase and downright toothsome prose was just so delicious and fun to read; I was so impressed by the writer’s skills that I couldn’t put the story down! Lisa’s ability in illustrating a rich, vivid, sometimes-gritty, sometimes-colorful picture of the end of piracy was outstanding, and I felt like I actually learned a lot about that era (and its lingo and culture) that I didn’t know before playing the game. I was totally immersed in my life as a pirate and I want more! I really hope we’ll see more from this author in future Heart’s Choice or Choice of Games installments, even if with a different genre!
This was also one of the first games that kept me really torn on who to romance, up until the very end. Normally I’m the type of person to lock on to a single RO, often preemptively and just from the game description, and then I pursue them single-mindedly until the end of the game. This was the first time where I thought I knew who I wanted to romance (Caleb), but the game actually kept me conflicted throughout because the opportunities to interact with them were both plentiful and interesting enough that all three stayed viable options for quite a long time. I really appreciated that the characters became more nuanced as time went on, too; they each had interesting backstories and motivations–Alexander surprised me with his declaration that he would choose his country over me, and Nathaniel ended up being less of an airhead cad/flirt than I expected–and I doubly appreciated that the same care and detail was put into the non-RO NPCs, as well, like Rose, Mr. Mott, and Darius. This was such a rich cast of characters who all felt like they had their own personalities and motivations without falling too much into caricature, and it really felt like a family of misfits by the end of things!
I also really admired the branchiness of the game as well as the variety of choices and playstyles you could pick. Mind, I’ve only done one playthrough so far (taking the pardon with Alexander), but I was impressed by the work that went into this and how much choice I felt I had. In terms of personality, there were some responses that seemed to come right out of my own head (as in they felt so natural and fulfilled what I wanted to say perfectly), and others that were so good that I just had to choose them even if I wouldn’t normally roleplay as that person. ("I want to fuck him and fuck him over", lol…) The pacing was also great and I really felt like it was a full game: I played for literally hours on a single playthrough and was blown away by how much content there seemed to be! The story just kept going and I loved that!
My only things I noticed were that sometimes there were repeat descriptions (lots of men seemed to have broad shoulders and tapered waists) or very, very minor incontinuities (on one page, Alexander reached across the table to hold my hand, and then on the next, he reached across the table to hold my hand again even though he hadn’t let go the first time), but there was honestly so much apparent branching going on here that I can forgive that whole-heartedly. My other thing was that there were times when interruptions of romantic moments seemed repetitive, contrived, or rushed: the underwater quake had me scratching my head for a bit because it happened so fast, and Rose kept interrupting me before I kissed someone: like I think she walked in on me and then went “oh I’ll leave you alone” like three times in the same night… but these are nitpicks at best.
All in all, this was an amazing game and such an exciting start to the Heart’s Choice line–I can’t wait to read more!
Okay so reading here, re: Nate, I didn’t think there was a chance in heck he’d be convinced to take the pardon. What do I need to do?
You have to select the option that says you want to be with him but you want the pardon too then look at your stats, and choose the option you believe is affected by your highest trait That’s it.
The only negative thing about this game so far is the fact that I can’t stop playing it!!
Do I have to be romancing someone to get off the island successfully because I successfully convinced Black to give me back the statue but then I had to give him it back to leave the island and then it was the end?
I’d like to hear if anyone could get a different needing but I think so.
no matter how hard I tried, every time I chose to be alone, I got the ending where the MC becomes a mystery with no one knowing what exactly happened to her. Sigh.
The beta for this one was really intense because it was so good! I am proud to have helped because this one was just so good all the way through…the writer listened and was appreciative but also so damned talented. Just maybe the most fun beta ever (along w pro wrestling)
I LOVE this. It’s gorgeous. You’ve captured him so well. I’m seriously blown away.
Hey, everyone! I stumbled upon this forum yesterday and I just wanted to thank you all for your comments. I can’t even tell you how humbled/thrilled/grateful/elated I am that you are loving Caleb and Nathanial and Alexander so much!
And some of your ideas! Just incredible. I wish I’d thought of them myself. Y’all are awesome! Thank you SO MUCH for playing!
Absolutely right.
And thank you again for your help. It truly was invaluable. If I ever get to write another game, I hope you’ll beta test it for me again. Your insight is amazing!
@Lisa_Fox Oh my goodness, it would be an honor - you are fabulous! (Also, it was easy to be enthusiastic in the beta because your story was so good! )
How do i get Eden to drink rum? Help please :"
Have high rebel and brazen scores. If you don’t have a high rebel score he’ll brush you off and just serve tea, and I think brazen is involved when you offer him the flask.
Hey everyone!
I just wanted to stop by and let you know that I’ve created two free stories as companion pieces to the game. One features Caleb and Nate, the other is all Alexander. They both take place prior to your meeting with them, but they are all best read after you’ve finished chapter three.
Thanks again so much for playing and I hope you all enjoy this little bit of bonus material! Here’s the direct link to download them (FOR FREE) in the file type of your choice: https://www.smashwords.com/books/view/1000219
Thank you, Lisa.
Aw that’s sweet, thank you! Hope we can read more of your stories in the future
These were wonderful! I don’t think they would have fit into the story, because wondering about the ROs’ intentions is part of the fun. But I’m SO HAPPY to get to read them now.
I read Alexander’s first because he’s my favorite. It’s very prudent that you wouldn’t actually be alone with him in that situation. I like seeing supporting characters like Faulks be competent! And I just like Faulks too.
