Murim Dragons

As a fan of martial arts stories myself, I’ve always dreamed of creating my own story as well. But this time I want to see Jianghu in its former glory, like in water margin. But with a mix of Murim spices layered on top. A story about rising up against greater powers, no matter how heavy the consequences.

This story is about your struggles. Your redemption. Your ambition.

Currently it’s only the beginning of Chapter 1. I’ll update it as soon as I finish writing the drafts.

Summary

This story is set in the martial world where strength, reputation, and cultivation determine your fate.

You’ll play as someone who is caught in the middle of betrayal, political power struggle, and ancient secrets tied to the Legendary Dragons of Murim.

You didn’t set the game to public. Also if you need an actual artist for dragons (whether western or eastern) allow me to tag @PaperCrease . In the interim you could go through unsplash and find inspiration. Good luck with the game

To be honest this is a good start

Oh right, guess I didn’t. I thought that as long as people accessed the link from this forum, they could open the game with no problem(?) But anyway, thank you. I’ll just set it to public. Hahahaha.

Yeah, I would actually love to commission a real artist for the job. But I can’t afford it now, maybe in the future. Hahaha.. I appreciate it tho.

Aww… Thank you! I really appreciate the praise. Let’s all witness how this story unravels. Hahaha.

Not to be a nuisance, but if you like to not use AI, here are some license free dragon images at Unsplash Just name and link the artist in the credits.

Personally I think this or this with the title on it might work great?

Edit: Again, I don’t want to come across as obnoxious, but I did go ahead and made these:

Feel free to use them if you like them

You’re welcome

edit: @Gorogoromaru I don’t know why the dimensions were off (i went off the minimum of 320x180 as per given on the page. So here’s a version that shouldn’t cut off the edges?

Thank you @MeltingPenguins for tag!

As for the commissioning I can do it for free really I don’t mind. Or pay what you want and could afford later.

And the next thing I like after dragons are martial arts of the non MMO kind. Water Margin!! Someone actually read actual books!! So I would be glad to help if you want.

Okay.. I guess we have some news. From now on, we will be having two game covers!! Hahaha. First is the image inside the game which @MeltingPenguins made. And the other one will be the game banner in CoGDemos website, made by @cup_half_empty.

I was looking at the images that @MeltingPenguins linked in their post and got inspired and carried away a little bit. Here’s some info if anyone’s interested.

The image source is from Unsplash, and from this other image, it says it’s from a ceil painting from a temple in Kyoto. Credits:

The font used is free and called Cinzel.

I used DeepL to translate “Murim Dragons” to Chinese and back again. It’s “武林龙” (Wǔlín Lóng). When translating back, it becomes “Martial Arts Dragon” (or something with “forests”, I don’t know).

We probably have someone in the community who can double check the Chinese

Quite interesting prologue, many choices in prologue making it feels more interactive, maybe it needs more time to marinated to enjoy it to the fullest

He gently approached you

There’s some inconsistency with the time tenses. Over all, you’re using past tense, but for a moment you shifted to use the present tense. Also, some a typo in strip.

A power that even the Emperors of that time could not match. But then that clan was stripped of its title (…). There was nothing great about the clan.

He pumped his arms, his biceps tightening under the sleeves…

…and making sure it was secured. Your father tapped you in the shoulder…

There are many more like these, so I suggest you give it a once over the text.

Well, right off the bat both the cover arts are Japanese dragons, in a supposedly Chinese? setting. I hope we all know how good the relationship between the two cultures and how orientalist they would make this looks.

And then we have a dire wolf. IIRC they are on another continent. A boar, a normal wolf or dog probably make more sense. A tiger would be badass and a reference to Water Margin, but our hero will likely not survive that. Maybe a leopard or lynx instead idk

Then we have Chi (Qi)… nothing wrong with that, but I want to ask, is this story going to be a low fantasy/non-magical/historical like Water Margin or a cultivator high fantasy magical world?

“Jianghu in its former glory” is kind of weird setting. Jianghu and Wulin (murim is the Korean of the same word, right? Funny we have Chinese setting, Korean title and Japanese cover art, oh boy lol) are pretty much the same thing. Jianghu is mostly made of grass root and underworld people and Wulin is more about martial artists and a bit more fantasy than Jianghu. Jianghu’s theme is about survival and struggle, vigilante justice and rebellion, like in Water Margin. If you want something more magical fantasy type books for reference, 金庸’s books probably more fitting. Don’t know if there are English versions of them tho.

Not a criticism, but I died a little at “HEAVENLY DEVINE PURE DISTRACTION PUNCH” lol
Also that random 6:45 am should change to early morning or maybe skip counting minuses or something.

End of rambling

Actually in 2020, they found a dire wolf fossil in China. (I don’t really know if this is true, since some scientists aren’t completely sure either.) So dire wolves in the northern part of Asia aren’t really that far-fetched. Honestly I just added the dire wolf because it’s cool hahahaha. In this story, I really just want to make it exclusive to China, Korea, some Japanese foreigners, and also Mongolians. I want this world to contain those elements hahahaha. Kind of like how One Punch Man seems to exist in its own self-contained universe.

This story will eventually become a high fantasy one. Like the title suggests, it will mainly be based in Murim. There will be factions like the Empire, the Orthodox and Unorthodox sects, and the Heavenly Demon Cult. Murim itself is usually set in a completely fictional continent. Basically a fantasy version of China. Murim obviously takes inspiration from that as does Suikoden. What I mean is that this story will be something like Water Margin. Murim was born from the Jianghu idea in Water Margin. I want to bring the story back to its roots. The very reason Water Margin exists, the very reason Jianghu exists. To defy power, control, and injustice. What I want is a story that serves as a nod. A kind of tribute to that whole trope. Especially since XianXia stories nowadays are just full of overpowered MCs with no drive, no character development, and no aspirations.

About the time system, I was actually trying to use the shi chen method. Which was used in Ancient China and also appears in some XianXia and Wuxia stories. There are 12 shi chen in one day. Each shi chen equals 2 hours. Every shi chen also has what they called ke. There are 8 ke in 1 shi chen, which means 1 ke is roughly estimated to be 15 minutes. But I figured this time system might just confuse readers. Honestly I don’t fully understand it myself. That’s why I just went with 6:45 hahahahaha. And yes, it’s PM.
