Oh, if it’s as small as that, then like, I think fans will be happy to fill in the blank themselves. A delicious, tantalizing absence to fill with headcanons, theories, and meta essays!
…I’d hate people to headcanon something completely wrong about something that’s so significant to the character. I mean, it’s not that the issue is small; it’s just that the MC doesn’t see much of it (apart from the character in question using only a supervillain name, despite them being the least villainous character in the whole cast, including heroes, going so far as to refusing to tell their civilian name if you ask, claiming it doesn’t apply anymore, despite everyone else using one at times; and refusing to talk about their past beyond mentioning they’re better off in that ragtag bunch of misfit supervillains than they were before) - it’s the whole reason they are where they are and do what they do, nobody who’s not a colossal jerk just wants to talk about it.
For stuff like this, I personally prefer to have that kind of stuff in the actual game somehow if at all possible. Feels more real, and a lot of codex stuff just gets buried forever and nobody reads it, imo. Navigating the menus and reading things in the little sidebar is kind of a pain.
Oh, well, this solution sounds easy enough right here. All you have to do is let me be a colossal jerk.
Unfortuntely for this solution, nobody who is a colossal jerk knows the details! (You can totally be a colossal jerk, but if nobody who knows is talking, how are you going to get the info, no matter how much you talk?)
I think there are two main reasons why a reader should be given information like that.
A. Is the information important for understanding the character or plot? Using your example, did they change their name for completely unrelated reasons, or is the reason connected to the story (even tangentially)? Or does the new name and/or old name signify something about the character in some way? Or maybe they just didn’t like it and it doesn’t really matter. In that case, maybe only MCs with a close relationship should find out (if at all)
B. Is the question asked by the reader something they’ll probably forget by the next chapter, or is it something that’ll get brought to the forefront of their mind multiple times? For your example, is the name change brought up offhandedly once, or is it something that’s mentioned multiple times? Is it a joke, or is it brought up in a more serious manner?
I’m posting my end of the first week update for June, today, instead of tomorrow.
With one more week and a day to go on my pre-beta test for Patchwerks left, there are a few interesting characteristics that make this test different from the other tests I have run for Patchwerks
One of the most interesting factoids about this test is that different people are saying that Patchwerks reminds them of different games and books ranging from Planescape to Neil Gaiman’s Neverwhere and Mirrormask.
I love this because it signals that my storyverse is diversified and original enough that it reminds different people of different favorites!
Patchwerks is not for everyone, and I struggle to accept that every day, but it is connecting to different people in different ways and that means more people can enjoy the vision I am working with to create this story.
I hope everyone has a great weekend, and that everyone gets off to a good start on the second week of June.
If it helps, my favourite game ever (it’s not a CoG) is definitely one that is suited for fairly specific tastes.
Ah, freedom.
I am now finished with university, and I will live blissfully in ignorance until the results come back, ehe.
But as I now plan to take the next year off, only working part-time, I have a lot more time for writing. I expect I will be able to pump out a lot more frequent updates to my WIP. Though, for one, I am exhausted. I think I’ll rest and take it easy until next Monday before starting anything serious with the updates.
Hope your all doing well <3
I’m still working on my rewrite, which I plan on finishing this month. I cut some stuff out, but the wordcount actually grew a bit… It’s incredible how many fails I notice after not re-reading my own writing for a while. On the bright side, it means I can make it better
I don’t think there’s ever been something that everyone likes in terms of media. As the saying goes, you’re not a dollar to be liked by everyone. Need to make that my motto - nothing I’ve ever made was popular, but it was mine and written by me for me.
what about Morbius?
It was a meme precisely because of how shit it was. And even that aside, it annoyed me, so it does not count.
There’s a reason I am very insistent on naming two separate games as my favourite game, and the one which I consider the best game ever made.
I fully consider the former a very 8/10 game at best, but I vibe with the tone and the setting a lot harder, even though the latter’s presentation and exploration of its own tone and setting are inarguably deeper and more complex.
You can’t do this open and then not close, man, come on.
Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, and Disco Elysium, fyi.
I really need to play DE. I got it on the Switch a few months ago.
I played Arcanum like a decade ago, when it was already very old and outdated haha. I like that sort of game, though. I seem to remember it being a nihilistic chaotic setting.
My favorite game is, imo, the best game: Dishonored. Great combo of atmospheric storytelling and engaging gameplay.
To be fair, Arcanum’s graphics were dated when it came out in the early 2000s.
I actually think of it as the opposite. It’s got a very Whiggish march-of-progress vibe which overrides the nihlistic tendencies of sort of technological and social stasis which most traditional fantasy settings give me.
Arcanum graphics were always mediocre at best. But it gives one of best atmospheres in gaming. Still, it was a game didnt resonate with me. Planescape however that was more my jam
