Jun 2025 Writer Support Thread

Thanks so much, it’s a bit of work but wasn’t so bad once I got in the swing of it :slightly_smiling_face:

@Zaxwlyde really glad to have been helpful, and that progress is going so well!

If you don’t have a strong preference for either as the MC, I’d approach it as: what kind of stats do you want to deal with programming? Both roles sound fun to play from a narrative perspective, but there’s a few mechanical quirks that might differentiate them on the game-play side.

I like seeing them on here! It’s encouraging to see everyone’s progress and helpful for keeping track of updates that I sometimes miss.

I may have worded that poorly; I have a habit of doing that. What I can’t decide is that which of those characters (the local detective or the grumpy out-of-towner sheriff’s deputy) is the amnesiac elder god, not that which one of them is the MC. (Although I guess it’s half of that anyway. And I do find the idea that the MC conjured said coworker out of thin air to act as a red herring extremely funny.)

I read “for easier visibility/meanness” and started to wonder what kind of meanness that would be.

Yeah I like having people able to respond to it more easily. I’ve made a separate closed thread that’ll just be for links to the support-thread posts, for easier visibility/neatness.

Passive-aggressive curation. Perfect for a library- or museum-based social backstabbing game.

Thank you!

I can say this. If you want anything ambitious or remotely non-typical IF-like, my heavy recommendation is to decentralize.

When working on Estheria, it was my first project with ChoiceScript. What I didn’t realize was that since nothing is saved that happens if you’re using the Stats button and running through ChoiceScript_Stats, that I had to refactor and rebuild so many systems.

At this point…? Choicescript_stat.txt is a glorified navigator. Every button within it goes to another file that contains its own data. This allows me to independently access everything in the game outside of the Stats page. I then made sure to work some variable access systems into areas like inventory.

You can access inventory at any time through the Stats option, but since nothing would save, any actual ability to interact with items, equip things ect is dependent on a subroutine access variable that only turns on/off when you enter the inventory from the actual game and not the stats page. This ensures that every form of interaction to an in-game system is actually saved and monitored.

Further, as the game will be an expansive RPG, I created a decentralized file system for every individual inventory category such as armors, weapons, medical, quest, ect. This allows me to keep things organized and just use a variety of subroutines to get you where you need to go.

Oh, wow. Literally just ran into this IRL but didn’t have a concept for it.

Woops! Didn’t read carefully enough! Either way, I think it’s a funny idea!

It’s less than three hours from midnight where I am so I’ll do my June progress report to keep myself accountable.

I didn’t quite reach my goal for the month - I did finish my chapter a few hours ago (it’s a whopper, 76 000 words) but I’m not done with editing and my more extensive personality edit. (I wanted to be like @Bacondoneright and not have personality stats for my MC, but I’m either not skilled enough to make it work or I chose the wrong genre for it. (I suspect it’s more the former.))

@dozendietcokesaday I’m a freelancer, mostly out of neccesity (I have to stay home to look after an aggressive relative with dementia. This isn’t great for the creative process.) So I write when I don’t have freelance work or other demands. Luckily my house is paid off and the living standard in my country is cheap comparative to Western nations, so I get by even though my income isn’t huge.

Ha ha ha no.

Suffice to say, this did not happen. I hesitate to even restate this goal for July. Part of me feels sure that it must be a jinx of some kind.

Sorry to hear that, I know the feeling - I hope July gives you more time and energy for it.

I did do this, I actually excceded this goal, and came it at a whopping 45k as of the end of my workday today!

Did not get to this, but that’s because 45k words did not finish the chapter like I hoped. I will for sure update in July.

Did not get to this one.

This month, I made solid progress on my writing goals. I added around 15,000 words to Part 2 of my interactive fiction project, mostly during weekend writing sessions now that I’ve graduated. After sharing the demo privately with friends and family last month, I publicly released it in June. I also took a leap and launched a Patreon (something I was initially hesitant about) but it’s been a great way to gather feedback and let readers vote on plot-related polls. The following is still growing, but I’m proud of the momentum so far.

My final end of month count is:

Started at 0, I would say overall that given so much actual structure and gameplay had to come together, that’s a solid count.

In June, I got most of the production of Meteoric done. In July, I’ll put the finishing touches on and submit it to Hosted Games. I did make a good amount of progress on my Trial of the Demon Hunter update, but in July I’ll be switching focus to a secret project

Such a good book. Best of luck with the submission!

Thanks Max. I hope you’ll like the new frills I added

This month I finally got through Elian’s route in chapter 3, but more importantly, I figured out a good writing setting for myself and started getting more consistent on my daily word counts.

This month I also managed to figure out a few ways of writing that seem to work better for me. Somewhat crazy, but sticking with a notebook and index cards has really helped my concentration problems.

I’m cautiously optimistic about heading into July.

I never regained my focus and have not finished the tasks needed to submit. Next month, I’ll likely be participating in a writing venture, so submission will need to be held off until August, I guess.

@HarrisPS Can my WIP update get added to the digest? As usual, I only released the update close to the month’s end, but I think it’s large enough to deserve a mention.
