I’m a positional player myself so I wouldn’t mind. I don’t play e4, though, so that would spoil your fun.

These heretics. No one should deviate from this start, so i could crush them all with my skill to bore people and crush their dreams of quick games.
As for the WiP, i’m not sure what to say yet. I have some questions for ya:
- Are you going to make the game focusing solely on which strategy to use in each situation (maybe randomizing things to avoid having people do trial and error?) or are you going to use skills to balance things?
- How is MC life outside of the chess tournaments? I know they’re fresh out of high school, but what about their family? How do they feel about MC’s goal and devotion to chess? I don’t want to turn things into a drama, but i’m curious about it.
- What is the deal with Ronald? Is he the MC’s rival or just that guy that happened to be the only obstacle between them and that shiny trophy?
- How do you plan to put romance in a story about chess?
1.) Like in chess and in life, there are multiple ways of going about things that are equally valid, and in my stories, I don’t like for there to be “right” and “wrong” choices. I want readers to be able to play in the style that they like and choose to be the kind of MC that they want to be, so the best way to win games would be to build on specific stats and play to your strengths.
2.) There will be some people who discourage you from trying to be a chess professional, and some who are fascinated at the concept.
3.) You could technically become a Master without ever beating Ronald, as you just have to reach a rating of 2200, but he is your rival and without beating him, you won’t be able to win the state championship as he wins it every year.
4.) Chess players still have romance in their lives.

I’ve always wanted to learn how to play, my uni apparently has it as an elective so maybe I still can. I’m glad you plan to make it accessible to people who know nothing about it like me.

Having chess as an elective is a fantastic idea. If I could get a degree in chess, I would actually consider going to college, haha.

You know, it’s quite convient (And dare I say, funny) that around the time you resurrected this WIP, that I have developed an interest in Chess ( My fellow A level mates themselves have fallen pray to it as a past time at school this year, damn those Year 12s 
). That said, I would very much be looking forward you continue this project ( and learn more about chess. Might as well kill two birds with one stone,eh ? )

I’d like to know how stats will affect the MC over the course of the game, like intution, middlegame, etc
Both Intuition and Middlegames are stats pertaining to your chess play. Intuition would help a lot in situations where you’re in time trouble and wouldn’t be able to calculate much, but your intuition and experience would help you still make good moves. It would also help you narrow down lists of candidate moves to the best ones so you’re not having to spend a lot of time considering several moves.
Middlegames would help your play after the opening stage but before the endgame. Stuff like making long term plans to improve your own position little by little and experience with attacking your opponent’s king, or weak squares or pawns in your opponent’s camp.

As a guy who doesn’t play chess, and doesn’t even really know the basics all that well, it’s nice to see on intricate instructions and guidelines in the stats page. Will there be certain sectons that you the player has to solve on your own?

Even if the reader may not be an experienced chess player, I want their MC to be able to play as one. So all of the challenges will really be based on stat checks rather than knowledge of the actual reader, if that makes sense. Since the MC will have to be playing at a low Master level in this story, much less than 1% of the people reading the story would be able to play at such a level, including myself. In fact, I don’t anticipate continuing progress on Chess Master in earnest until I become a Master myself, or at least close to it.
It will be similar to how you can be a genius scientist in Choice of Robots despite not having any of that real knowledge in real life.
