January 2025 Writer Support Thread

Hmminas. I was told that it was originally to be a three-way collaboration, but after a time she was basically left to work on it by herself. I don’t remember who the other two writers were, but both would have been members here. Again, I don’t know who they are though one I know has been published here multiple times; those two, I think, should have the right to continue the work if they come forward and request it. Myself, I just want to read it. She was always showing me parts and vignettes but they were written and rewritten so many times (like a serious probably dozen or more) that I had trouble keeping in mind what was and was not current. Would it be too much to ask for a PM for the story link? I just want to see it in full if I may.

I’m really sorry, I don’t feel comfortable sharing anything when I don’t know whether she would have wanted it shared. I totally understand but it doesn’t feel like my decision to make. I think it would be best for you to contact her wife about it.

The story was never completed. She was still months away from a rewrite on her ‘common’ route and had not done an update in over a year to her demo. The only up-to-date copy I’m aware of is on her computer.

I agree with Harris that even her last updated demo shouldn’t be shared without her wife’s permission.

Honestly that’s really really cool, and I hope to have my coding skills be up to that one day. It sounds really awesome and really engaging.

Ah thank you! It’s often pretty fiddly and can be a bit challenging to write in a way that feels like the characters are acting like real people  My favourite way of doing it is where the two romanced NPCs talk to the PC about it at once, but that doesn’t always make sense and it can be repetitive if the PC has been especially generous with their affections.

I ended up drafting Chapter 1 AND Chapter 2, and although I didn’t do a map, I did send off the revised outline so hooray for fewer spanners. :slightly_smiling_face:

And, having just crunched some numbers, I wrote about 22,000 words in the month.

This month I am NOT BEATING MYSELF UP for barely getting through the goal I set for this month - completing the last two floors of the Museum trip in the first chapter - and barely getting through two Halls. I chose to focus on another creative project (podcast for my fall book release) but I still worked on it when I could and reminded it that I was still here.

Calling it a night now as feel a bit more tired. Will do what I wanted to do tomorrow now.

Final word count for January;

Quiver 39,713 words versus a goal of 25,000 words.

I shall claim this as a win! Bring on February!

It is the last day, but I did finish goals 1-3! Patreon went up today with a demo update! I was so nervous, but I already have suscribers, and the demo has only been up an hour or so.

I was not able to meet my daily wordcount goals, but I’m not too upset about it.

Back to my old collaborative RP days, I love exploring character dynamics and character development, the way characters interact with each other and how their relationships and environment affect who they have/will become. It’s also nice to just, y’know, be a little silly, write some silly little unserious things, for some levity. Sometimes I like editing, sometimes it’s just hard work. When it’s enjoyable, it feels like I’m really polishing my work like a precious stone that I’d be proud to show other people.

I don’t really feel like I’ve done anything this month, though I did a little bit here and there… I got my resume in shape this month, but only sent it out once, and then there’s the whole question of cover letters… Maybe it’s a burnout thing. Or it’s a still-in-the-holidays brain thing. Probably a mix of both? Anyway. The voting period for the IF Short Games Showcase 2024 finished up last week and it was nice to make an effort to play the other entries and rate them. I wanna find some time to play and comment on some more of them, though, perhaps next month, or at least finish commenting on the ones I’ve played. We’ll see. See y’all in February~

This month was pretty rough for me. I’ve struggled with a mixture of grief, anxiety, existential dread, guilt and general negativity all the way throughout. Suffice to say, I wasn’t very motivated to write, and didn’t end up producing too much this month.

At least I finished the prologue of my new story. It’s not long by any means, but it provides a decent foundation for the rest of the game, or at least I think it does. Here’s to hoping further chapters will be faster and easier to write.

Happy New Year, and thanks for stepping up to keep this tradition alive. Eiwynn’s legacy is huge, and it’s great to see the thread continue. For future threads, maybe mix in some writing prompts or themed discussions to keep things fresh. Whatever you do, just keep the supportive vibe going, that’s what makes these threads special. Here’s to a great 2025!

I took this month “off” by only doing things like handling feedback and instituting checkpoints.

How did I spend my “vacation”?

By writing 40 000 words in something else.

I may have a problem.

This shit storm of a month has dealt me it’s final blow.

My computer died. I got a replacement.

And I just found that that the year and a half worth of updates I have been manually saving to GitHub are GONE. They do not exist.

So now I have to spend money I don’t have on getting a SSD reader to get the files off my old computer.

This is your reminder to go and save your game AND THEN SAVE A REDUNDANT FILE SOMEWHERE ELSE. MORE THAN ONE PLACE. PLEASE.

I’m so sorry! I’ve definitely encountered a lot of lost work before, but not on that scale. I can only imagine how stressful it is. Best of luck getting your data back!
