I have a lot of sympathy for what Kevin Gold wrote on a related topic:

The general idea of attacking or defending whole artistic media or genres seems kind of pointless to me. Either you like what’s on offer or you don’t – you won’t find me going to a cross-stitch meetup saying, “Don’t you see how linear and non-interactive this art form is?” Or showing up to a drum circle and saying, “This would be so much better with a melody!” Maybe this kind of critique can lead to innovative new art forms, but as a first pass, it’s just failing to understand and appreciate…

and I suspect we’ll end up disagreeing on the idea that a single set of standards applies to all “good fiction.” But I reckon it’ll be an interesting disagreement.
