I'm Sorry, But I Think We Should See Other People - ROs You Hate

Quick, must find a Gower RO to dislike.

… erm, the reveal of the knight’s identity in A Midsummer Night’s Choice was disappointing, I guess (the age gap really was a turn-off, even though I’m someone who generally likes older ROs) . But it was funny and clever and the game is supposed to be funny and clever, so how can I complain?

Something something vocal minority. 4,210 reviews bring its score to a 4.8/5.

I don’t think I hate any RO’s (if I dislike them I don’t go down that route), but Black magic really creeped me out in the worst ways. I think most RO’s commit the sin of being boring in my book, but I have weird tastes, so that’s fine.

This thread makes me realize i haven’t played many Cog or HG’s. RO’S were always a sub-plot for me, (Except wayhaven and other Romance-focused games). Though, i suppose it’s time to gain a hatred for a character.

If i had to pick my worst RO, i’d say the shape-shifter from the evertree saga. That character is just so utterly annoying. Also, a b-

Their name is Hayden Winter. Know your enemy!

It’s been quite awhile, I haven’t read those books in a hot minute, (6 months). Have mercy upon me.
How’s the last book coming along?

I don’t know. Last we’ve heard from @ThomB a few days ago was:

I plan to make the CoL thread when the demo is ready!

Okay, but out of curiosity: Why don’t you like Winter when you can almost entirely avoid interacting with them?

It’s the only person that i hated that came to mind. The character is just seemingly manipulative and scheemish. They would use the MC for their own benefit no matter the consequences. Based on Ruby’s experiences with her, it’d be safe to say we should probably just do the world a favor.

Okay, that’s valid. I always forget that sympathizing with Ruby is an option.

Yea, rory kinda sucked but I love your ROs! I would probably hate fitzie if it was a serious game but it’s so funny, i can let things slide. I can’t be mad because I’m laughing

Because unlike other gammes, you play some sort of origin character. You’re ronin has a past and you must deal with it.
He, or she, love Jun but knows that it’s both dangerous for them and their follower. But with that shitty past of them, they hatred about thrmselves, their pain, you have to understand why they love Jun(ko). Not agree, but understand (and that’s the position of most of the npc).
And Jun past is really well developped too, making them a really interesting psychopat. They really love your ronin too. But it’s an unhealthy romance.

A lot of romance are unhealthy in this game. Tosh, Jun, Momoko… The most healthy might be the one with the kid you must protect (and I don’t really know if it will become a romance, but their relation isn’t fucked up).

I seem to remember that guy trying to murder me without reason during the faceless attack just After making love to my RO. That mean that the man just watch my character and their ro in their most intimate moment, listen to their secret fear and hope too and THEN show himself to kill them without reason. That, my good fellow, is a psychopat.

Yeah, that’s not really what happens, though.

Winter always spies on you during this scene, and that’s certainly a dick move, but they couldn’t possibly know you were going to have sex in one route. What were they supposed to do once they realized? Change back into their standard form, say “pardon me, I’ll be back in ten” and leave? Yes, spying on someone is pretty bad, but it’s not like they intentionally invaded an intimate moment. That does not make a difference for your MC ingame, sure, but it makes one for Winter’s characterization. If you end up in the tailor shop (or whatever that place was) with Ruby for example, Hayden will still follow you and be there, but there’s no intimacy involved in the scene leading up to the confrontation.
And Winter doesn’t actually try to kill you for no reason. The package belongs to them. It was originally their job to deliver it. They’re incredibly greedy and always trying to take advantage of people and situations, and additionally totally fed up with the island at this point, but that does not make them a psychopath. People kill in real life out of greed all the time, it makes them despicable people, not psychopaths.
I don’t even doubt that Hayden could possibly be a psychopath (I’m not convinced, though), but definitely not for the reasons you mentioned.

Could you not?

Annika Visser from “The ORPHEUS Ruse”. I wouldn’t really say that I hate her, but she certainly is the reason why I never finished playing that game. I had to reject her two times because she just wouldn’t take no for an answer. It was very uncomfortable for me, so I noped out of the game before I maybe had to reject her a third time. To be fair, I haven’t played that game since 2014 and, as I said, I never finished it, so maybe I am misremembering stuff or never saw the reason for her behaviour. Maybe she was meant to make the reader uncomfortable. I don’t know.

Ooof, “characters won’t take no for an answer” is one of those things that definitely needs a disclaimer at the start of the game.

For me, and if I’m reading people correctly a lot of others on this thread, the romances i hate have less to do with the ro and more about who the mc becomes in the romance. For example, if we had the option to nope out of th Jun/ko or Black Magic romances they would just be another villain with a romance path for those who want it. The same people would dislike them but probably not as much since they probably wouldn’t have ever seen the actual romance because they wouldn’t choose it. Instead they have to read about “their” character acting in a way they don’t want.

A more personal example for me is A from Wayhaven. I liked her (Ava in my games) a lot in book one. Tough, independent, stubborn, she’s a lot like my own detective. And her reactions were hilarious. At least to my sarcastic flirt mc, but not as funny to his unfortunate office furniture.

As we got into the latter games though we ran into problems. I understand her hesitation about her feelings, falling for the boss’s estranged son is probably a very bad idea after all. My problem was my mc changed from a flirty cad who liked making her squirm into a lovesick puppy holding back feels every time she ran away. Not that there is anything wrong with that reaction, it’s just not the right one for my detective. That’s why I dislike the A romantic route.
