Definitely Star Wars, in particular a “Knights of the Old Republic” style IF would be epic
I wouldn’t mind something JRPGish too, say the Legend of Heroes, Persona or Final Fantasy (although entries in the latter vary so much you could argue the IP isn’t really necessary).
I also agree with Mass Effect, the Witcher. I’d go for Elder Scrolls or Fallout over LotR as I feel they’ve got a lot more untapped potential; I love LotR but it’s beginning to feel a bit saturated at the moment. Warhammer (Old World or 40k) might be cool.
I’d go with a series of fantasy novels called Shadows of the Apt, by Adrian Tchaikovsky. The premise is that long ago, the world was overrun with giant deadly insects/invertebrates, and in order to survive humans had to make a sort of pact with them - different tribes of people took on the qualities of different insects, becoming ‘kinden’.
Good taste! I love that series, although as I recall I never quite got around to finishing it (8/10 books or something; I should revisit it!).
EDIT: Metro 2033 as well, as an alternative to Fallout.
When I say LotR, I mean the full breadth of the Tolkien Legendarium. There’s a lot of untapped potential there. I agree we have had enough of Sauron and the Rings of Power.
i would love to make a story on jujutsu kaisen, demon slayer, noragami, after school summoners (game), resident evil village but i only want the concept of the mutation, my hero academia.
ive actually already made like stories of my ocs in the same setting on a couple of these but they will have to stay shelved. MHA is easily the most ideas ive written since i think its the most flexible to kinda rework
I’m not a writer but I’ve always wanted to play an IF or like a dating sim (probably in a different AU) where the ros are the protagonists of the AC games
other IPs I could think of would be ATLA/LoK, and The Hunger Games
If that’s what appeals to you about Star Wars, it’s very easy to write stories like this without having to rely on all the baggage that comes with the Star Wars intellectual property. In fact, I might even say it’s preferable. Star Wars is an archetypal story of myth. Going back to the mythological roots would result in arguably a more “pure” Star Wars experience!
Imagine going three years without a post and then dropping a choice nugget like this. Well done. And a fun idea to boot.
In my heart of hearts, I want to do a Battlebots IF. All the fun of a rookie to legend sports story, but with more carnage. That’s not really a mainstream idea, though, even if the rights were available (and they are not).
I do actually want to create an entire series of fan gamebooks based on the Critical IF system by Dave Morris (who also created the open world Fabled Lands books with Jamie Thomson) using and adapting RPG content to make a fun set of personal projects. It’s a fantastic system that’s the best of both narrative driven CYOA and stat based gamebooks. Top of the list for IPs being:
Star Wars: Edge of the Empire (set shortly after Episode IV)
Star Wars: Age of Rebellion (adapted to the Sequel Trilogy)
Star Wars: Force and Destiny (adapted to the Prequel Trilogy)
Avatar Legends RPG
Fallout (probably based around Fallout 3 or New Vegas or an original setting)
Detroit Become Human
Horizon (Pre Zero Dawn)
Batman: Gotham City Chronicles
Doctor Who (UNIT based)
Star Trek RPG (Either TOS or TNG era)
Elder Scrolls Skyrim
Hopefully one of those will happen sometime! Thanks to dyslexia I have a habit of great ideas and not actually getting them into reality…
EDIT: Some mentioned Mass Effect and Assassins Creed, so definitely those as well.
