In partnership with World of Darkness and Paradox Interactive, Choice of Games is proud to announce the release of Hunter: The Reckoning — Day for Night by Josh Labelle, now available on Steam, iOS, and Android. It’s 20% off until September 24th!

Josh’s previous game, A Crown of Sorcery and Steel, is on sale this week as well!

These monsters aren’t just in the movies! Will you hunt the vampires, werewolves and others stalking Hollywood, or will you become a monster instead?

Hunter: The Reckoning — Day for Night is an interactive novel by Josh Labelle set in the World of Darkness. It’s entirely text-based, 1,000,000 words and hundreds of choices, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

Hollywood is full of monsters. From the greedy studio heads to the desperate hopefuls out for their big break, nobody gets out without sin. Once, you were one of those hopefuls, barely scraping by trying to make your dreams come true—scrambling to land auditions or hustling to get your screenplay read.

Then a chance encounter with the supernatural showed you that Hollywood is ruled by another kind of monster. You’ve dedicated yourself to hunting down the beasts who stalk the back alleys of Los Angeles, and doing everything in your power to stop the ones who rule the boardrooms.

It’s been a blockbuster summer for the supernatural, full of inexplicable phenomena and monstrous incidents. There are fires in the hills, ghosts in the theaters, and a beast threatening pets in Beverly Hills that is definitely not a coyote. Could it have something to do with EVRLST, the hottest new self-help and wellness cult run by a washed up ‘80s superstar? Is it true what they say about him never being seen in the daylight and not having aged a day in the last three decades? And what about the woman they call the Baron of Hollywood? What kind of power does she have—and can it possibly compare to the studio execs?

Fortunately, you’re not alone. Others have seen the truth in the shadows, including a retired special-effects wizard, a mortician to the stars, a theater manager, and more. You’ll need all the allies you can get as you drive through the seedy supernatural underbelly of Tinseltown, where chaos reigns, and blood and money flow. There’s no telling who will get top billing, and who will end up slashed on the cutting room floor.

Or will you shirk your hunting duties to pursue your Hollywood dream? Make connections, land jobs on movies, or even make a deal with the devil to get cast in a major blockbuster. Maybe the best way to defeat the bloodsucking monsters is to join them. Or is that Hollywood’s biggest lie, the lie you tell yourself?

  • Play as male, female, nonbinary; gay, straight, bi, asexual, or poly.
  • Choose your weapon to blast through supernatural threats, and upgrade it for even greater firepower; and visit your local garage to find your perfect getaway vehicle.
  • Stop a hot new celebrity from literally sucking the life out of their fans—or succumb to their charms and plunge into a romance.
  • Solve a decades-old murder and set an unquiet soul to rest—or drive out the ghost with arcane force!
  • Uncover the secrets behind a cult that preys on young vulnerable actors, and stop the monster behind it!

Redeem lost souls in the city of angels—or lose your own soul trying.

I assume the reason there isn’t more engagement on this post yet is that everyone is busy at the moment playing Day for Night. It is probably my favorite CoG game in almost two years. I can’t imagine ever getting tired of it. This is one of the games that make me envy the copyeditor for getting to read every single word.

Honestly I’m kind of burnt out on WOD if’s. I might get it if some people in the discords I’m in like it or Kate

I’ve been working on the demo a few days now and I’m still in Chapter 1 :joy: partly because I’m not the fastest reader, partly because I’m a completionist and there is just SO MUCH CONTENT.

It’s very good though so far.

I’m still in the early part of the game, but so far this game is everything I want a Hunter game to be. 10/10

If I didn’t think it would possibly violate some kind of federal gambling regulation, I would be totally taking bets now on how long it’s going to be before someone on Reddit posts the first complaint about not being able to romance La Abeja.

It reads good, just a shame that theres nothing to do after you kill all three initial hunt targets, also after going to bed one time I ended up killing some guy named Cross who was a vampire, very weird writing beat. Thought there was more but I think I’ve reached the end which is weird because the Agent seems to allude to more days/quests/gigs.

Just played the demo, are there only three main quarries or is this like in Night Road where you complete three and more missions will be supplied?

I think you hit a bug and skipped sequence somehow, because after the three initial hunt targets I got a mission to get info on Cross, then I got three more targets related to Cross that work in the same way as the three initial hunt targets

If you’ve played only the demo, you’ve barely glimpsed a hint of the existence of the main quarry.

Oh thank god there’s more, i really thought there was only three

Pushing a new build that includes toggles for converting dots to digits, primarily for screenreaders.

Hunter game was good, way better than the latest one. I did feel like the author bungled up the romances. Like for most of the game the ROs are like “just wait, when we have sex. It’ll be mind blowing. Just wait for me I’ll be ready soon”

And then you get to the climax of the relationship when we are making it official it’s just a few sentences .

You have one million words and these are your sex scenes? Disgusting.

Otherwise it’s a perfect hunter game and WOD game there’s the horror, and you really do feel frustrated that you are just a human at times but it gives you plenty of moments to aura farm.

The characters are good with genuinely tough choices in there sometimes. I could see how he was inspired by night road but he also had his own unique twist. Overall s great addition to catalogue and surprisingly the cop ended being a great RO/fling?

Also, how does one prevent Weaves from completely taking over Elliott :sob:. I want my sweet nerd back not this creepy monstrosity. From the wording I thought they were going to share but I don’t see that happening what’s going on?

This game can be good, but it’s being held down with limiting you to the amount of choices you can do in skill checks. I was sent to kill vampires in a motel, why can I not use the Assault rifle to shoot them? Or my incendiary charge. I know you can’t account for all the choices, but shouldn’t there be at least an option use the weapons that you bought with your hard earned money? (It’s really hard to earn money here.)

I’m impressed by the writing and its scope. I love learning about Hollywood’s history and experiencing the atmosphere of LA.

When I ask Elisa about her relationship with her mother in the rehab clinic, the game suddenly goes like that I’ve completed the investigation of the doctor, then the quest related to Elisa also automatically ended (or failed?). It seems like a bug? Here are the screenshots.

after choosing “your mom has a point…”, it goes straight to this↓

And there seems to be missing content in one of Jeff&Cyrus podcast…

Also hope I can tell Fausto to treat his dummy better… …

I can’t tell if this is bug or just Gabe being misinformed, I was a screenwriter.

And a bad scene change where I got booted out of a convo into a fight:

The best thing to do if you find issues like this is send them to support@cog to be sure someone will see them and pass them along.

Thanks to everyone who’s played so far! I love to hear about people’s experiences of the game and am interested to hear whether people discover some of the less likely story outcomes.

In addition to bug fixes, I’ll be continuing to add some minor content as well as new options where people flag that they wish they’d had a way to use something else (such as using firepower on Chet and Jonah, flagged above) over the next several weeks in response to feedback.

As Aletheia mentioned, if you encounter a bug, please flag it through support and it should be fixed quickly.

The Elisa bug flagged above was caught yesterday and should be fixed in a patch going out soon.
