More Nico scenes pleasee. I wish there was one more at the end. Or that we could end up with them. After finish all their side quests and before the last scene/ending
New build has been pushed everywhere.
- a number of typo fixes across multiple files
- slightly rebalanced elliottbeast checks in hollywood_elliott and reworded a few options as it was slightly too challenging for a player trying to balance Elliott between beast and man
- fixed an issue in the first hollywood_blueliners quest where the player could accidentally be skipped forward and fall out of the quest
- fixed an issue with repeating text in ch5
- fixed an issue in hollywood_universalredeemer with Adrienne increasing composure instead of resolve when you purchase her stat increase
- fixed an issue with a wrong variable being checked in hollywood_nelli for the second quest
- fixed a place where a Nico pronoun variable was incorrectly being used for Lex, causing it to sometimes display an incorrect pronoun
- fixed an issue with the discounted price not being applied correctly in hollywood_fixerupper and with the lockpick not being correctly crafted in hollywood_home.
- I fixed an issue with a missed goto in comebackstory that caused a large portion of the chapter to be skipped, noted on a negative Steam review.
I accidentally refreshed the page and now I’m at the beginning of chapter 1 and all my saves are gone. Is there nothing I can do??? I was at Dr Sanger’s clinic, it took me an entire day to play that far…
Absolutely loving Day for Night. One of the best CoGs I’ve played. However, I did encounter a bug regarding Chet. I submitted it via email. I’ll wait to continue my playthrough until it’s fixed.
So sorry you’re having this experience and not sure why it would occur! At most a file update should be rolling you back to the beginning of that chapter with your save intact.
Reaching out to support would be the best way to see if anything can be done to help.
Missed in the notes above but I believe this should also be fixed by the push that Jason made earlier today.
(Just noting in case you have a save after dealing with Chet and Jonah but before returning to Dahlia: as the issue was only with the variable being read in the quest ending and not the one being set, returning to Dahlia should now work. You shouldn’t need to roll back all the way to the beginning of the quest.)
Great! Thanks for letting me know. I started playing over again; I had to roll back. By the way, there was another minor bug I forgot about. I don’t know if you prefer bug reports here on the forum or email. But I’m doing the podcast for money. I’m at the part in the podcast where I pick “whip up a tale about a cool gunfight with Merle at a bar in town.” I then get the response “you’re not good enough with guns to make it sound convincing.”
My skill with firearms is maxed out. It’s three dots. And my charisma is two dots. Maybe five dots total isn’t just good enough, which is okay, but the explanation made me wonder if it’s a bug.
It is strongly recommended that you report bugs via email. It’s cool that @JoshMLabelle has dropped by the forum, but most authors aren’t super active here (and some don’t come here at all) and the CoG editors are super busy and don’t usually read a lot of what’s posted here, so email is the only really reliable way to make sure someone sees your report.
Couple of bugs but another strong title in the CoG Hunter series.
I am curious though - is the only way to become a vampire is by joining the Cross faction? I sided with the Camarilla throughout the game but all I could do at the end with the Baron ending is becoming a ghoul
Finishing the first season of L.A. By Night and then playing this was definitely a vibe. Congrats on the release, @JoshMLabelle!
Love the size, but some bugs keep happening. I win check and it acts lke I didn’t, or vise versa.
I think it might be bugged but I can’t unlock Rowan Hirst’s laptop using a password, given the hints in the room. Any help? Pride and Joy + japanese dont work
Try all-lowercase? I used the Japanese word (hokori?).
jesus christ, all kinds of ways to enter this one and it’s just all lowercase no punctuation, Thank you!
Devs really should’ve spend a moment to let game at least parse the first uppercase way to write it.
Just finished, and wow, I really couldn’t put this game down. I ran into a few bugs (will report to the email) but nothing game-breaking - also absolutely not surprising for a game of this size and complexity!
I loved SO much about this - the strong authorial voice, the sense of place and history, all the movie references, the characters, the save system (thank goodness for that, I definitely went back a few times), the variance in how I could play my character, the way the game areas and timings worked, so I could choose to do any amount of things in any order before going through to the next chapter, the way quests were logged - the structure of the game felt very polished and natural. I also thought there was a nice conflict between the amount of money you have, the things you want to do with money, and the various ways you can get money. It was hard, but not impossible, to be a good character.
My other favourite World of Darkness game is Parliament of Knives, and Day for Night easily ranks alongside it. Very, very enjoyable. Probably one of my favourite CoG games.
My story:
Spoilers under here!
I went for a mostly investigation/manipulation/persuasion build, though ended up with full Firearms and high Dexterity and Wits. Low Strength, Stamina and Athletics. I used Storyteller mode, which I really appreciated.
Killed all of Gabe’s 3 lackeys, saved all the hostages, kept Arbo alive, Hobbes died (I really wanted to save him and save Arbo, but couldn’t manage it after 2 attempts), got Arbo and Billie back together, romanced Lex, then Nico, then Elliot (better candidates kept coming along!) and eventually chose Elliot. Nico became the king of his realm, Elliot reconciled his two halves, Lex saved the theater, I made an enemy out of Milnius/Lumina, Renn wanted to raise Epps from the dead but I stopped him (but was so curious how that would have gone down!), saved Jeannie. Probably a lot more stuff, but so much happens in this game!
My ending was that I fried Gabe with Alex’s special machine. No one died apart from Dmitri and a few of Wes’s men.
I also had managed to find out that Gabe carries a special canister around with him, but couldn’t do anything with that information - maybe on one of the other ending routes it would have come up.
I chose to remain a hunter, though I also had the option to take Gloria’s offer, do something with the Baron (she was going to make me a ghoul, I think), or join the podcasting boys on their show.
I also got all the animals, because they were all adorable.
If I have a nitpick, I could have used a bit more of an ending with Elliot - I think the last thing I read was something about “making it work”, which absolutely makes sense, but felt slightly unsatisfying. (But I also totally get that my wish for a big romantic sendoff does not really make sense in the grim world of this game.)
It definitely seems that way, which was a little surprising. I thought it would have been that if your relationship was with the Baron was just “ok” then maybe you’d be ghouled but if it was great/perfect, then you’d be Embraced instead. Kind of like how in Out for Blood certain stats determine if you’re thin-blood or… Toreador(? I forget) if you get Embraced. And that Cross’s faction would provide another way to become a vampire.
I was totally hoping that if Arbo was alive for the final battle and that the PC chose to become a vampire, that he would live through it and chastise and threaten the PC for turning, sort of like what happens when you choose to become a ghoul Oh well. Certainly a minor thing in the grand scheme of things, there’s already so much going on in this game!
New build pushed!
- A variety of small typo fixes and wording improvements.
- Some players were finding themselves without their cash after encounters in the later chapters due to getting captured and having cash stolen. Added reminders and hints of where the player can find their stolen cash at the exits of chapters where cash can be stolen (Fake It 'til You Make It and Comeback Story) in order to help prevent players leaving without finding it again, as well as Storyteller mode alerts to help make it clearer what’s happened for players.
- Added potential use of incendiary grenades, gas grenades, flashbang, and a weapons check when dealing with Chet and Jonah in the quest “Mad Dogs Don’t Sleep EZ”.
- slightly nerfed the difficulty of some Jeff and Cyrus podcast choices in their side quests, as well as adding clarity about the failed checks in this section.
- In Fake It 'til You Make It, added the player being able to acknowledge that Rowan Hirst is dead if they killed him in a previous chapter.
- In Comeback Story, fixed an issue with the thermal scope not being properly given to the player if they stole it from Lumina.
- In Killer Parties, allowed the player to succeed in attacking Rowan Hirst at the beginning of the chapter, switching onto the hostile combat path if desired.
- Throughout the end of Rising Star and in the Baron’s ending, added more acknowledgement of the player killing Slava if they did so.
- In Rising Star, fixed a bug where the player was not properly being invited to Thorn if they sided with the Baron but did not succeed in killing Nico.
- In prologue, fixed an issue where a variable increment could prevent players from reaching an achievement (“No One Left Behind”), and slightly nerfed the difficulty to get another achievement based on feedback (“Perfect Killing Machine”).
- Fixed an issue in Chapter 10 that could cause a difficult to reproduce game-breaker along some romance routes.
- Fixed an issue in Killer Parties in which the laptop was not registering the password if typed in all-caps or with a capital letter.
- Fixed an issue with some “false endings” in Chapter 10 that still proceeded to the epilogue.
- Added a final confrontation moment with Arbo if player becomes a vampire and Arbo is still alive.
**- Fixed an issue with some bonuses not being set correctly in Chapter 1 when choosing profession. - Fixed an issue with switching out the player’s vehicle at Arbo’s garage in chapter 10 that was causing a loop.**
I just bought this game and have now been playing through the beginning parts of it. As a little bit of a background, I’ve played almost all the WoD Choices games and the Book of Hungry names is one of my favorite CoG experiences of all time.
With that written, while I’ve been enjoying the writing approach of this game, even if it does a bit to get used to, I just hit a gameplay element I need to check as this will really influence if I want to continue to playing or not. Since this is about a game mechanic, I’m not putting this under spoilers even if I do reference a minor story choice.
Anyway, I finished the prologue hunt with all the optional tasks completed, during which I chose not to steal the money from the safe, although I did out of curiosity check that it would have been 900 dollars. As the start of the game progresses, I am given multiple opportunities to either demand or steal money from people, but continue not to do so as that’s not the character I wish to play.
Then, after visiting the agent for residuals and before going to buy the new car, I am in the first discussion where I am given the chance to improve my character stats. At this point I have about a 1000 dollars, which means that if I had chosen the theft/demand route I would have over double that. It is revealed that increasing a skill point costs 1500 dollars and a stat point 2500 dollars.
The only interpretation I am able to make of the game initial signals is that not continuously stealing/demanding is a severe hindrance on my capability of improving my stats? Which is not a criticism of the game design if that is the desired path, but I also know that I would enjoy that kind of an experience and thus just wish to ascertain before wasting any more time on the game.
I’m only in Chapter 5 but had to restart the game a couple times when it got updated so I’ve experimented a fair amount in the first few chapters, and it’s very true that money makes the world go 'round in this game. I personally prefer the xp system in Night Road for a few reasons but one of them is that it can feel a little overly punishing to role play in Day for Night. But I respect that everyone has different gameplay preferences, and it’s still a v good game so far.
And that said, the game does in fact punish you for stealing and manipulating for money, largely by reducing everyone’s opinion of you. For example, with the safe you mentioned, if you do it with Rosa around she will abandon you (easily solved by doing it first before recruiting her) and Arbo will later call you out on the theft (you can appease him by passing another stat check).
There are other situations where the characters get mad at you if you’re a money grubber.
In general the money/stat system is fairly punishing. From a pure stat-maxxing perspective, I think the best thing to do is be super nice to all the characters and then they’ll still like you if you’re a little greedy here and there. I’ve had a much better time anyway on my third playthrough doing this.
There’s also no downside to succesfully stealing the Ferrari if you get it painted right away (do the Fixxer Upper discount quest first though)
I just got 7.5 from asking an RO to pay me for services, and only like a -6 relationship ding or something like that. Worth it from a gameplay perspective IMO.
Yes, I’ve no idea why the writer went this route for stat progression instead of exp. Not only does it cost money but upgrades are not dependent on progression; upgrading from 2 stat points to 3 costs the same as 4 to 5. It’s a very jarring experience to not be able to make an upgrade after completing 2 side quests without being a kleptomaniac
Honestly, there should’ve been an expansive gear system similar to Night Road where we can use our money to buy better gear to hunt monsters, and incentivize buying by making it difficult to face monsters head on in combat.
I feel like Day For Night needed more time to cook in the oven. It’s a good game, just needed alot more polish and testing.
