The bad news is, obviously the update is somewhat behind schedule. I blame a combination of moving and Mass Effect 3 distracting me.
The good news is, I have made significant progress on the update. I am hopeful it will be posted by the end of tomorrow.
I will make sure it includes a fix for the bug jackmcbarn pointed out. Thank you for that!
@Panther The vast majority of pioneers did travel in groups, and there will be the opportunity to link up with several others along the way. The part of the game available thus far still takes place in the more populated areas of Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois, so it’s less essential there.
Phase one of tonight’s update is up. The introductory shopping/outfitting sequence is now complete and operational. I’m working on getting a few bugs out of the saloon sequence, I’m hoping to have it up in the second part of the update in an hour or so.
I’ve tried to track down the error that is happening with the inventory system, but I’m not having luck. So I’ve put up the remainder of the update and will try to track down the bug in the days ahead. If anyone else experiences it, please send me a message with as many details as possible about what triggered it, and I’ll try to get it fixed.
In the meantime, the update is up. The update includes the following:
The introductory sequence is now complete, including all available purchases that can be made for the trip
The sequence at Plainfield’s eating hall is finished.
The sequence at Plainfield’s saloon is almost entirely finished. A few responses were generating errors, so I’ve taken those down until I figure out the source of the error. Most options in this sequence will work normally, most characters won’t even be able to select the problematic options.
Several errors were fixed in the hunting/foraging sequences for those who skipped Plainfield. A small amount of additional content has been added to this sequence.
I know I haven’t been great about meeting my own deadlines yet, but I’m hoping to have another update done by the end of next week. If I get everything done I want to, the next update will fix the bugs with the saloon sequence and the inventory bug CountDon reported, as well as adding the Plainfield church sequence and an additional scene for all characters who skip Plainfield.
Please let me know if anyone spots any errors or typos. As always, I welcome any feedback whatsoever, especially any specific things people want to see in future scenes.
The ‘title page’ (the first screen (the first page that just reiterates the title of the game) is unnecessary.
I’m not 100% sure, but $100 seems a bit high to call a ‘small’ bounty. A c-note from 1849 would be have the same purchasing power as about 2~3k+ in 2010. (Maybe that is the right amount though, IDK.)
The inventory is messed up. I bought a revolver and rifle, and it says is, “You are currently carrying no additional equipment or suppliesa revolver, a hunting rifle.” The problem is that you’re line to tell the player they don’t have any supplies always displays.
yea I bought every Item I possibly could but in the inventory it said ''You are currently carrying no additional equipment or suppliesa revolver, a small quantity of tobacco, a hunting rifle, a set of hunting and skinning knives. ‘’
@Reapora@paul Clearly something is wrong with the way the inventory is reflected on the stats screen. Thank you both for the info, I’m going to try to get that fixed ASAP.
@Reapora You are entirely correct, $100 in 1849 would probably equal about $3,000 in today’s purchasing power. Bounty hunting was an extremely lucrative business for those brave and foolhardy enough to attempt it, the rewards had to be high in order to get people to risk their lives hunting down murderers and thieves the authorities couldn’t catch. Billy the Kid, for example, had a $500 bounty on his head for several years. I think $100 is fair to describe as ‘small’ by comparison, but I’ll do a little more research and maybe tweak the language a bit.
Please note that while I strive for historical accuracy in many respects, I do take some liberties with pricing in some instances in order to achieve gameplay balance.
I have made a small fix which should stop the inventory from displaying ‘you are currently carrying no additional equipment or supplies’ when you are, in fact, carrying additional equipment or supplies. There are still other bugs I’m working on fixing.
There are actually a few ways to make money on the trail already, if one keeps an eye out for the right opportunities. More will be added in scenes to come.
"line 67: invalid indent, expected at least one line in “if true” block.
Although the line number varies for different backgrounds, 127 for farmer, 57 for vet, 107 for shopkeeper, 117 for politician, 67 for fur trapper, 77 for reverend, 87 for teacher, and 137 for craftsman. For some reason the criminal doesn’t get an error.
Hmm. It seems that whatever I buy ended up getting an error when I switch to the stats page.
The first time, I picked the criminal path, went and got the 75$ horse, no rations and then I went to the gunsmith and bought the most expensive gun. I switched to the stats after that and got the {} error.
The second time, I picked the criminal path again, went and got the 20$ horse, no rations and went to the general store, bought the tobacco and hunting equipment. Then I went to the church, before I did anything, I switched to the stats and got the same {} error.
The third time was the same as the second BUT I bought a 5$ survival guide and a 50$ gun before I went to the church. Then, I switched to the stats and didn’t get a {} error. After that, I donated the first option ??? cents and switched to the stats again but didn’t get the {} error. Hmm…
A big THANK YOU to CountDon, 13ventrm, paul, and others who have helped me track down this bug. I believe I have fixed it and put up a fix. If anyone spots any other problems with the stats page, or any other bugs at all, please let me know! You guys rule.
Now that the demo is (hopefully) bug free, does anyone have any comments or criticisms on the content?
