I’ll look it up on the code, perhaps there is a wrong pathway involving choicescript_stats. Anyway, I’ve been updating the game a few times in the last minutes, fixing typos and bugs, so it could have been due to this again. Thanks for reporting!

You say you couldn’t use possession and dreamwalk? And you still could choose Apparition even though you didn’t have it?

(In the first part of Chapter 2, the only time you can use Dreamwalk is when you go to Ollie’s room—if he is still asleep. In the second part, however, you will have more possibilities, including using Dreamwalk on Samantha—who is the only character without a Dreamwalk pathway in Chapter 1)

My bad. Fixed!

@Bugreporter
Thanks for reporting the bug, Bugreporter!

But… what otherworldly powers did you use to access Chapter 3? It’s like pre-pre-alpha stuff :hushed:

Only in the scene with Jeremy. Everything else was fine!

Oh I love this :heart: but instead of saying I play rpg,wouldn’t it be d and d ? Otherwise it’s so fun and I love with you did with the ghost powers .I’m excited to see this to fruition

While I agree that “play RPG” reads awkwardly (like a placeholder), the people I know who play tabletop RPGs tend to call it “gaming” in the generic sense. They only seem to refer to it by title when discussing the system the use. So they might say “I’d like a new Pathfinder book for Christmas,” but they’d also say “I’m going gaming Friday night.”

I’m really enjoying this game so far! Playing an evil ghost is super fun but playing a ghost who’s desperately trying to reach out and help others is emotionally devastating in the best way. I can’t wait to see where this goes.

Ooooo this was fun! I remember having a similar idea of writing something where the protag. was a ghost. It’s hard to decide if I wanna be like Casper or something of nightmare fuel, which makes it all the more entertaining!

Okay, I had Poltergeist, Dreamwalk, Whisper. Artifact was the typewriter.

When inspecting the bullet hole;

Summary

Should be “shoot” in the middle choice.

An idle suggestion I thought of while looking around the parent’s bedroom? The option at some point to tidy up. Make the bed, fold clothes, put the lipstick away, that kind of thing. Seriously, I’m dead, I got a lot of time to fill. And I can’t imagine being afraid of a ghost that does dishes.

One comment on phrasing; RPG nerds (…hi) don’t usually say “play RPG” as such. Usually if someone is going to play Call of Cthulhu or whatever, we’ll say “We’re going to play [Name of game] later” or if we haven’t firmed up which game “We’re going to play a rpg later.” It sounds odd to me to use “RPG” without any article before it, and artificially generic. Like calling something a “sweetened carbonated cola beverage” instead of coke. “Gaming” would also work but yeah “PRG” alone does sound like a placeholder instead of something someone would actually say.

Typo

If you choose ““Don’t… come to this house… ever again.” (Whisper)” it takes you to a screen where you can keep choosing that option indefinitely. It’s never grayed out.

YOU CAN CLEAN UP! I AM SO HAPPY! I am going to be the most helpful ghost ever. And of course it would be Ollie’s room that’s a total tip.

When Samantha comes home all the Whisper choices were grayed out to start with. Three of them make sense, because I didn’t see what she wrote yet or look out the window earlier, but “I know you can hear me.” seems to me like it should be selectable more or less whenever.

If you do bring her the poem, as earlier, you go into a loop where “Bring her the poem you found in Amber’s room. (Poltergeist)” is never grayed out and you can keep selecting it indefinitely.

So that was one play through. When I replayed to make other choices, still with Poltergeist, Dreamwalk, and Whisper as powers, I got these.

If you choose to open the window and let a breeze blow the papers, it goes to the same page as if you did nothing.

Ollie’s dream has a couple of typos.

Later, “I won’t do that” doesn’t really make sense to say in response to “I don’t think you trust me.”

If I look out the window after everyone leaves and see the van, I have the choice to appear, despite apparition not being one of my powers.

So far I’m really enjoying it. I assume the van is foreshadowing for the break-in later on. I’m looking forward to that a lot! I’m curious to see the difference in how the family reacts to a super friendly ghost choosing a violent/frightening path to protect them vs a ghost that’s been tormenting them all along.

I adore the beginning of the 2nd chapter!! I am having so much fun playing as a fun, harmless ghost, I especially love the dnd session, and getting to play along in some small way. And imagining a ghost saying “don’t…blaze it” made me laugh aloud. Dunno why but that specifically nearly made me lose my shit. And finally getting recognition from Sam is amazing! I feel bad for scaring her…but I do need her to notice me. How else will I solve this mystery and also help them all out? At the same time…I kinda wish I could apologize to her ;^; Also am super happy at these combined power options, though I think I would also encourage other combos that don’t use either whisper or apparition, as I feel like the other powers are feeling a little neglected rn, and they’re all so cool! I am also loving Amber more, which I wasn’t expecting from the first chapter. She seemed kinda bitchy at first, but hearing her enthusiasm for literature has softened me to her a bit. I already can’t wait to play through the 2nd chapter’s beginning again, there were a lot of things I didn’t get to do yet and some certain hints have me intrigued as to what happened while I was floating off doing something else.

Chapter 2 just crack (hah! get it?) me up. My MC have decided to freak out Ollie’s pothead friends and cleans the house after they leave to go to a party.

So about the first chapter and checking on amber. Could there be a way we can appear as an apperation while playing with the teddy bear as a combo? I would generally like more combos as they seem like they could be fun.

Played through again and found some glitches I thought I’d point out ^^
2nd Ch., when you have the option to appear before the man who went back inside for the “pen”, and you appear before him and he asks if you are real, the first two options return to the same page. Also, when you hand Sam the note Amber wrote about Laura, the same happens. It returns to the same page, and you can continue to select these options over and over.

Edit: I played as an evil spook this time. So evil in fact, I had a -13% for the Benevolent Spirit stat! (113% Evil Spook!) Now thems some serious spooking, right there! Although, perhaps not intentional…it seems our mighty powers invade even the stats menu XD

Spelling error in chapter 1.

Michael thanks him and brings a large pepperoni and a half-Hawaiian half-marguerita pizza.

margherita

pepperoni pizza has only a few slices left, too, and the marguerita remains untouched.

“I told you not to order marguerita,” says Ollie.

The two bolded words above should be “margherita”.

I… the frying pan fell on the ground. We just asked for pizza, and it should come in the next minutes.

Put ‘few’ between the bolded words.

Great game BTW. :grin: It’s so fun being a evil spirit.

Edit

We tought that the times when

She ends up, however, trailing her drunk bother

Don’t have screenshots but when I was playing without Apparition I still had the option to appear at the window when the van appears.

Are you inspired by movies like insidious or the exorcist etc…?

UPDATE: Added Belief/Skepticism stat to each character, added minor passages in Chapter 1 and 2.

The “global” Belief stat doesn’t exist anymore. Belief is now, as the Terror level, individual to each character.

If you keep haunting a specific character, their Belief will shoot up while other characters might remain skeptical about your existence. This can lead to interesting dialogue options.

Also, not all family members are prone to believe in the supernatural. Samantha is the hardest person to achieve a high Belief level, while Amber will start to believe in your existence more easily.

@Idon_t_havaname, @Minnow and people who commented about the weirdness of “play RPG”

I think that was a lost in translation mistake. I have heard my friends saying, “let’s go play RPG” many times, but I am Brazilian (Morton Newberry is a pseudonym—my real name is Fernando) and we were speaking, naturally, Portuguese. It didn’t occur to me that this sounds odd in English.

Thank you all for reporting this, really. And please, if any other passage sounds a bit off to you (especially if you are a native English speaker), please tell me.

I changed the few let’s play RPG bits to let’s play Occult Noir, which is the (made-up) roleplaying system in the story.

Thank you all again for drawing this to my attention :smiley:

@BrownBetty
Thank you so much for your report!

Fixed

That’s actually a good idea. I’ll implement choices like these in the next updates

Also fixed.

Changed!

At first, I made this “I know you can hear me” choice available only if you had previously talked to her in this scene. But you are right: this sounds rather odd. I’ll change it.

This was a missing hide_reuse code, thanks for reporting it :slight_smile:

Um… that was a choice I had left to “write later” and I just forgot about it :see_no_evil: I’ll add an appropriate consequence to it in the next update!

Fixed

Now that I read it again, it sounds a bit strange, yes. I rephrased it.

That was a missing selectable_if code. Also fixed

@ChibiKittens
I think you are right: some powers might have been underused so far. I find it really hard to strike a balance in this sense. I’ll keep adding pathways and possibilities, but I assume that the powers will be “equally interesting” only after I finish writing the game and spend a considerable amount of time analyzing them.

Until then, please feel free to suggest new ways of using the powers! As you can see, some suggestions people make here end up in the game.

And about the choices returning to the same page, those were missing hide_reuse codes. It should be fixed now!

@Runehood66

I added this choice especially for you. Thanks for suggesting new ideas!

You can see the choice below, already available in Chapter 1:

*hide_reuse *selectable_if ((poltergeist) and (apparition)) #Show up beside Amber holding a teddy bear in your arms. (Poltergeist + Apparition)
*set beliefAmber + 8
*set amber + 12
*set sawTeddy true
Amber turns around and locks her eyes on yours. Then, her wide pupils gaze at the teddy bear.

She jumps out of the chair, stumbles on the desk and falls on the ground, screaming.

As she looks at you again, she finds only the teddy bear lying immobile on the ground. She kicks it, and the stuffed animal recoils on the wall. Then, panting, she examines her room with her mouth agape.

It takes a while until she crawls back to the computer chair.

*if (sawGiraffe)
Before she can concentrate on her tasks again, however, Amber casts a suspicious look on the stuffed giraffe across the room.
*goto amberHub

@Bugreporter
You are the best bug reporter, Bugreporter!

Thanks again. I just fixed it :slight_smile:

@jekvll
That was a missing code. It’s fixed now!

@jordanjarvis5
Oh yes.

In the next chapters, there will be a scene in which the family hires an exorcist. There will be a bunch of references there :wink:
