@SirDeusVult
As correctly noticed by @Myrtle, there is a pre-established timeframe for the MC’s death, and it is around the 1980s/1990s. You will still be able to build your own background out of a variety of options (ex-lover, profession, and so on), but your character died somewhat recently.
I did so because it would be much more difficult (and it would create grounds for inconsistencies and paradoxes) if I had to check “does the MC know what this is?” every time I described a radio, a computer, a photograph, and the practically uncountable elements of modern life.
Perhaps in a future interactive story I will add this possibility—to choose when the MC died with the appropriate changes on how the MC sees the current world—but not now.
So, yes. If you choose the quasi-Victorian clothes, it has to do with your MC’s aesthetics rather than with the time of their death.
@PhoebePeak
It was indeed a bug! Thanks for reporting it. This passage should only show up if the player chose the bones.
@TheDrake
I’ve been thinking about whether to “level up” the powers at some point in the story, as the MC gets more used to their new capacities. But… I’m not sure about it yet.
@BrownBetty
That’s correct. The MC can’t leave the house (at this moment, at least).
Thanks for your insights! I will certainly focus on the Brooks relationships before adding any new layer of ROs in the game. Also, don’t worry: you will see much of (and have control over) the MC’s past life and family.
@E_RedMark
Not necessarily the couple. I am just confabulating at this point hahah
@mellowello
I went and changed the “Evil” stat shooting up at some Apparition instances. You are right: this is not necessarily evil.
From the next update onward, you can choose how do you appear to them as an Apparition—as a friendly entity or with a murderous grimace on your face. This will impact the “Evil/Benevolent” stat and, of course, shape the opinions of the Brooks about you.
You also gave me an excellent idea: to combine powers. I loved it. So…
The MC will be able to combine powers. For example:
(at the dinner in Chapter 1) #Emerge from the fireplace as you make the flames burn wildly. (Apparition + Poltergeist)
(when following Samantha in Chapter 1) #Materialize at a safe distance from Samantha. “Hey, please, I just want to talk to you.” (Apparition + Whisper)
I talked to @MahatmaDagon about the best ways to “gamify” these ghostly powers, and we ended up thinking about a kind of “Belief-related mana”. That means, the more Belief the Brooks have, the more you would be able to use your powers. I haven’t implemented this yet, though. I’m still considering the idea.
In later chapters, Whisper will enable you to have entire dialogues with some characters, not only single phrases or remarks.
The idea is to give the MC the power to define the lives of the Brooks. So, I don’t plan to keep the MC behind the scenes, that’s for sure
@AdmiralLynx89
Thank you so for your comment.
The MC has many tasks already: to uncover their own past, to shape the lives of each of the Brooks, to oppose (or to cooperate with) the antagonists that will show up later in the story… as I have written here, I feel that adding some ROs to the MC would be too over to top, or it would even make the story feel bloated and convoluted. I agree with you completely.
