Fallen Hero: Retribution release thread! (Book Two) (Spoilers Inside!)

Yeah I love the mental health aspects to the narrative. The way Sidestep really relies on their telepathy to get people and gets lost when interacting with Ortega cause they have to rely on communication and social skills, really speaks to my ND struggles.

Hells yeah! I’ve been reading Malin’s lore posts, both tumblr and patreon and discord, since the first book. And I have to say, Sidestep misreads Ortega so bad it’s hilarious. Like, Sidestep kind of believes the whole “ditzy, slutty daredevil” persona Ortega puts out there and I think they’re starting to realize that’s not really Ortega’s MO anymore. To be fair, Ortega puts Sidestep on a pedestal in some ways and well. They need to communicate.

I would send them to the game’s support email, I don’t think staff monitors this thread. We post too much lol

By the way, what’s the best place to report minor bugs and/or typos? Should I send those to the game’s support email, just post them in a reply to this thread, or something else?

I’m one of the editors for Fallen Hero. If you send them to me, I’ll make sure they’re added to the list of stuff to fix! :slightly_smiling_face:

I also try to monitor this thread, but given how active it is, it’s easier to guarantee it’s noticed if you PM or tag me.

Glad to hear you enjoyed Retribution!

Oh, same here. There’s this page of internal monologue you can get early on (if your MC suffers from derealization), about looking in from the outside on a world of people who don’t even realize it can take effort to belong, and feeling like you’ve forgotten how to even pretend, that really resonated with me. That and the conversation with Dr. Mortum if you come clean and meet them in person.

They’re both so terrible about it! You could make a drinking game of it: take a sip every time the MC blatantly misjudges Ortega’s character, wake up too hungover to even remember the end of the playthrough. (The reverse would also make a good drinking game, but it’d require you to infer Ortega’s thought processes yourself.) They’ve spent so long working around the complete lack of open communication in their relationship by relying on subtext and best guesses, by this point their understanding of each other is like 50% unconfirmed assumptions that have had a decade to grow. What a mess (I say, affectionately).

Did anyone managed to get the achievement for cutting Jake threads? I tried following the guide on post 3 but I can’t seem to get it.

It’s a tricky one. You need 75+ subterfuge to get the option, but it’s also impossible if you’re too good at telepathy – with telepathic boosters and high enough stats, you’ll win before the chance comes up.

Oh, and while you can cut the threads after being captured, that doesn’t give the achievement.

The game’s scope and replayability are mindblowing so many paths to chose from, I’m always having tough time even deciding who to hang out with, steel to tell him off for not pursuing his investigation, herald to let our MC see that there are people who genuinely and openly can care for them, argent for this angsty romance path and insight into her abilites, ortega due to shared past or Mortum who has the wholly unique dynamic due to puppet’s relationship with them.

Anyway, I’ve seen so many points discussed, but I don’t think anyone yet talked about some troubeling repercussions of having force/subterfuge over 80. On one hand, it lets us avoid getting threaded by HG, but on the other, we start to alter other people’s memories/behaviours wihout even noticing

Here are some examples:

The most jarring one during conversation with steel when we try to brush him off after noticing his suspicion of our behaviour:

Summary

#“You’re being weirder than usual,” I say with a laugh.

“You’re being weirder than usual,” you say with a laugh. If there’s a hint of suspicion, you can’t let him get to you. Play innocent. You have nothing to hide.

*if subterfuge >= 80
“I suppose I am.” Chen frowns as he looks at you, but the frown softens into a smile as you pretend innocence. “Don’t mind me. We’ve been talking too much. Old memories.” He rubs his face and continues to walk. “I know what you mean.” You once more fall in step next to him. “And I’m sorry. I’ll try to be less of…well, you know. Me.” “That’s my line,” he says, the smile now fully soft. Just a stray suspicion, nothing to worry about. You’re a former hero. His friend. “I guess neither of us is used to getting along.” “We can work on it.” You shrug. “That’s all we can do, really.” “That’s true.” A flash of a smile, half teasing, half fond. “At least Spoon likes you.” And maybe that’s the only approval he really needs.

*set steel_clue 0

but also smaller things like getting rid of the crowd and noises while being overwhelmed:

Summary

#My shields are fraying fast.
In the middle of the crowd.

Surrounded by thoughts.

A thousand voices screaming in your ears.
*if willpower = "calm"
  *set willpower "rattled"
*if force > 80

Why can't you shut them up? Your shields are strong; you're more powerful than ever. Why are they fraying? Why won't they shut up?

  Why can't you just…

  [i]aaahh

There it is. The quiet. The crowd is gone. Somewhere.

  Not where you are.

  Shaking hands. Dry mouth.

Notice that both of those choices don’t initially indicate that we will use our powers, especially in steeel’s scene. This is some scary prospect, will MC even notice it themselves at some point? Will they be able to control it with powers on that level or will we become like Killgrave from Jessica Jones, everyone’s wills bended to ours (let’s take into account that steel is described as someone disciplined with strong mental shields)

Thank you for sharing these! I think someone also mentioned earlier on the thread too that MC can accidentally make someone stab themselves in the hand with a fork when going out to eat with Steel.

Question about HG: How do you get the flashback from HG Mind? Do you have to shake hand or not? I don’t remember…

You have to say no to them then chose to go in their head then pick an option to use your resemblance to get them to let you go

Ah…no wonder it hasn’t worked so far, for some reasons in my memory there is something about them shaking hands and HG is like a spider or something?

I’ll try that, thanx!

First though you either can’t be known as a telepath or you have to have force >= 80 to get through the dampeners then in order to get the flashback you have to have either subterfuge >= 80 or arrogance >= 70))

@malinryden so when you are done with the Serie, and become mega-rich, mega-famous, and become one of the Olympus Gods and Goddess

Do you think you can give us a new series of Mc&Ortega? :joy:

Here, I already got you started in Titles for inspiration!

Fallen Hero 2: Reconnecting…with Ortega
Fallen Hero 2: Running away…from Ortega
Fallen Hero 2: Getting Busted…by Ortega
Fallen Hero 2: Where are Thou, Ortega?!

How does that sound?

Well, joking aside: Guys, please. It takes a few minutes at best but remembers to leave a Review for this game on your favorite platform. Review means more readers for Malin, and authors need it. That’s how we get Good stuff! By telling the world what we thoughts of the game, not just playing it. So go forth and leave a Review, it only takes a few clicks! :sparkling_heart:

Some aesthetics I made

Ace-Chloé

And the older one with faceclaim for Cole and Chloé. Which are a bit out of date because I often change MC’s and puppet’s appearance, lol

Summary

If you have your MC boards or drawings, you can share. I’d love to see

Can someone tell me how to damage my armour by 60%, trying to get the careless achievement rn

Piss off argent on the bridge, take insane risks and lose to blaze, fight the catastrofiend in the sewers with high daring/ fight jake and get captured at the auction with at least decent hg rep, etc…

Okay, now I’m very tempted to give up on my plans to make Step get better and instead traumatize him even more to get those weird flavour texts. Thankfully I just need +8% force and +9% subterfuge, so the extra trauma won’t be that much (right?)

This is why I really love the Ortega/Step/Herald poly. Danny steps the hell up and basically tells both of them to pull their heads out of their asses and talk to each other. Get the truth out into the open. That whole scene in his apartment was just

I think it make romancing Ortega better, really. At least, right now it does. I’m sure it’ll all go to shit soon, when they find out Step is the villain.

 Yeah, sure, it won’t be bad!

Just do the character creator at the beginning. You can max both stats to 81 and run through it. There were some things missing that caused a few weird happenings that didn’t really fit my Step, but I was trying out the Chen romance and didn’t feel like actually making a character for it.

Nah, I was already interested in the gates so I guess I will just replay again (and make Step get stuck in the puppet’s body for extra weirdness)

Just out of curiosity, is it possible to raise both strength of mind and subtle manipulations to 81 or above?

I think some people have managed 80/82, but it’s difficult.
