I agree, music can be helpful in setting the mood but…
Honestly, I prefer something darker, more emotional, with a visceral feeling to it at least
Hey I just finished the first playthrough of Retribution, and came back after years off the forum to say thank you. It’s a great story, and I already dread the wait until next release.
I fell in love with the characters, I struggled to maintain my MC’s resolve to burn everything to the ground, it’s just a very compelling story and I’ll be a bit sad for a time because I leave this world behind.
So congrats @malinryden , and most of all, tank you.
Yeah personally I really like the Daredevil S1 soundtrack. The game does have some cyberpunk influence but I think the dark street level superhero music vibes for me a little more.
Amazing game. I’ve played through the last checkpoint about 5 times using two characters. One was romancing Ortega and the other, Argent. In the Ortega playthrough, I told Ortega that I was a villain. Crashed and then hospitalized in the Ranger facility where the Rangers took turns watching over MC. I want to do the same thing for my Argent playthrough but for some reason I can’t achieve it despite trying out a couple of different variations. Do we have a guide somewhere?
I want to see all of the endings.
I didn’t read this thread or the others, so I don’t know about a proper guide.
If you are really dedicated though, and using an Android phone, you can check the code using an app like APK Parser. This way you can see consequences and stats change associated with every choice.
Wait, how do you come out to Mortum as trans? I got an offhand acknowledgement when she came out, but my MC didn’t really bring it up explicitly.
I’ve done it by meeting up with Mortum as the puppet and telling the truth. Once they start questioning you about why you lied to them, there’s a dialogue option that’s something like, “Because I’m not enough of a (wo)man for you.” At least in my playthroughs, this leads to dialogue of Dr. Mortum also coming out to you as trans. If you want to share that you’re a regen, too, the choice is still available after.
I also remember from the demo that you can come out as trans if you meet up with Mortum as yourself and come clean, but I haven’t played that route in the finished book, so I’m not sure if it’s changed at all. In the demo, though, there were similar dialogue options to the one I talked about above to come out. I don’t remember that triggering Dr. Mortum to come out to you, in return, though. But like I said, I only did that path in the demo, and it may have changed a bit since then.
Ohhh interesting. Possibly this was not an option because my character is trans woman Sidestep with male puppet (going for maximum emotional confusion), that or I just didn’t pull on the right thread to see it.
Oh yeah, having a different gender from your puppet might change the options. I always play as a trans male Sidestep with a male puppet, so I’m not sure how the options differ.
There really is no “happy” ending to this game.
As Sidestep, the best you can do is spend a few weeks with your RO, blissfully unaware that your Puppet is now being piloted by someone else.
As Puppet… well, there’s no real way to overlook that someone else is using your body. I can’t even begin to imagine how violating that must feel.
And, of course, if the theories are true and it truly is Heartbreak returned and has a fixation on Sidestep, then there are no words to describe how fucked the situation is. And if it’s not Heartbreak… who the hell is it?
You can also say you are more comfortable in the puppets body because it’s a (wo)man, if it’s cross-gender (this isn’t available for trans Steps bc they are obviously not more comfortable). It’s not exactly coming out but it makes Mortum realize the MC is in the middle of a gender crisis that is probably gonna end with the MC realizing they are actually trans. (In fact assuming genderquestion is true, it basically does by game end even if Step can’t act on it just then because they are too busy)
It could be MC scar aka Heartbreak 2.0, that would explain the obsession…
Love Sidestep, but lol this is some kinda karma for the people’s body they took over.
I think the “happiest” ending you can get is with a romanced Dr. Mortum (and with the Puppet/Sidestep is the same person reveal earlier), getting stuck as the Puppet, and then kidnapping Sidestep from the hospital with their help. Doesn’t solve the issue of something waking up but at least Dr. Mortum knows more than every other RO at this point and is capable of actually possibly doing something to help right away since both Puppet and Sidestep would be in the same place.
But you’d also be stuck in the puppets body
I doubt it’d actually be a permanent state but if any of the ROs were capable of providing an actionable resolution to the problem of being stuck it’d be Dr. Mortum.
It won’t be, the paths should merge in I think mid G3. Honestly I’m way more comfortable being with Mortum while stuck as the puppet than being with him stuck as Step. Whoever controls the puppet controls Mortum assuming their relationship is good, and that needs to be the MC.
To start the Ortega/Herald/Sidestep poly in book 2 you have to go on the Herald date before the HG meeting and tell them the truth(Well the truth about being a Re-gene) then send the puppet to meet HG then get stuck in Step’s body. Don’t imminently go to check on Ortega pick one of the other options then you should get a phonecall from Herald. You should then have the option to take Herald with you to go see Ortega and tell them the truth about being a Re-gene
I’ve just become an accro of IF for not long, and it’s my luck to encounter the Fallen Hero series as a start! Many thanks for bringing out this magnifique world and tangled & overwhelming relationships among them!
I have to say Ortega is really charming, which even seduces me into learning a little espagnol lol
Especially after the first run of the sequel, I can’t help feeling guilty to reveal the identity to them(inevitable after the crash), though I’ve been wondering whether that’s gonna happen in the second book and surely it sucks for everyone my MC tried to keep in touch with… The outburst of Ortega was so real, which is somehow assuring & hurtful to me, and I’m definitely exciting to see close quarters in the next encounter!
Haven’t tried using Sidestep as MC’s villain name in Retribution, maybe something more thrilling will happen? Let’s see ![]()
