I’m sorta skeptical on whether Ace actually survived. Their prediction, after all, was something along the lines of “you’ll kill me and it will doom you”, and I think that’s what happened. Ace is dead-dead and the personality is somebody(or something) else.
Is there news on the Rebirth update? My step playthrough is long overdue
Nothing on the Patreon. I don’t know if there was anything said on the discord.
Only thing that i know is that on the 21st of April Malin wrote:
Now only a little more than a month left at work before I start writing full time, it is hectic, but the countdown has started.
It’s going to be nice, I feel so filled with Revelations ideas.
So we can conclude that June is the month that Malin will start to write uninterrupted by silly things as working for a company! (Joke, joke )
a little more patience for the replays and then we can go wild
Wow, this thing has a sequel now? Can someone link me a spoiler-free review anywhere? Pretty please?
I dunno any spoiler free review anywhere so…
Carrying on from Rebirth, Retribution allows you to further develop your villain by choosing if you’re a hero hunter, an anarchist rebel with a cause, a not so common thief, or an would be mob boss.
The characters are still the highlight, especially now with all of the Rangers allowed to show off each of their unique personalities and secrets, IF you allow them to. Conversely, you can be a recluse, burning all their bridges with your former partner desperate to reconnect.
One thing I was a little disappointed in is that until nearing the end, there’s very little villain community interaction. What there is is great, don’t get me wrong. However, there’s still more emphasis on Sidestep’s relationships with the Rangers and their former hero life rather than how they’re settling as the new villain.
The thing that Retribution has, even moreso than it’s predecessor is replayability. There is a lot to this IF. Heavy scenes, interesting plot points, character interactions, and more endings than I can count.
If you loved Rebirth, you’ll likely like Retribution. If you didn’t, I question why you’re here for the sequel of something you disliked.
Disclaimer: Not great at making reviews. Literally cobbled this together in 10 minutes.
Honestly the only thing one should know is that, if you liked rebirth, you’re going to adore retribution.
There’s so much going on, so many different paths, it will take you hours and hours to explore them all and even then there’s probably going to be something you missed. I’ve replayed the game so many times, and yet (after reading the thread) I still find myself going back because I missed something. It’s baffling, how intricate it is… And it’s only going to get better.
Happy reading!
Thanks. I’ll probably give it a go. It’s been a while since I played / read any interactive fiction, it’ll be the first one after the longish hiatus.
Your review was very helpful, so was @Mosie 's
Cheers
Someone has probably said this somewhere in the thousands replies, but I’m keen to open the discussion again: might it be that Lotus is the one joyriding our spare body?
Honestly I really don’t think so. she’s been gone since rebirth and in retribution’s epilogue it’s implied she escaped from the farm’s attention or perhars even from the farm. So I think she’s finally going to make appearence in the next book.
I’m willing to bet that Dr. Mortum’s reason for not having dampeners in their lab is that they have kidnapped Locus and are doing something to her(tests/experiments maybe?)
Body hopping requires a set of skills which should in theory narrow the suspects, but at the same time there’s a lot on the plate.
My first thought was that in Step’s head hides whatever HB is, while perhaps the thing awakening in the puppet is either the latter (depending on endings) or Ace themselves.
Now, I know that no brain activity = they’re gone, but idk.
The endings where the puppet smiles like a shark feel more threatening than the ones where they wake up screaming. Common sense and logic says Ace is gone gone, but idk Locus would be weird? At this point I’m not even sure about the number of body snatchers

If you could have the power, what would you prefer?
- Telepathy
- Flying
- None!
- I want some cool power… but other than these two

Power bring to exaltation, exaltation bring to overconfidence and dependence, overconfidence and dependence are weaknesses. Therefore, power is a weakness.
I’d want telekinetic powers. I’d get to move objects and maybe even myself to emulate flying.
If shapeshifting work irl then shapeshifting it is. Imagine this, you don’t have to worry about your identity you can basically just be anybody at any given moment and time, you can get away with a shit ton of illegal stuff you can just steal a bank and pretend you’re a beggar down the street before the police arrive to the scene or pretend you’re the president and troll people lol. Seriously shapeshifting is probably the most broken power you can possibly have irl imo, you devastating damage you can do to a country is immense, you can be anybody and that includes government officials just a matter of attaining their badge or keycard etc and the whole entirety of the country’s secret is at the palm of your hand
Sorry for wall posting but tl:dr shapeshifting is op
What kind of shapeshifting are we talking about? The Mystique kind where you can look like anyone, or Prototype where you can flat-out change the hardness and density of your body?
Anybody, including animals
Telepathy may be potential nightmare fuel but the power is just too tempting.
If you do have shapeshifting, wouldn’t that also mean that you copy that animal’s nature? Like having instinctual mating rituals, seasonal migrations, the desire to have children, etc. It would be really interesting to see how that affects a person’s pysche.
That can be overcame by maintaining the sapience of the human mind, regardless of what animal forms you shapeshift into.
