Fallen Hero: Retribution release thread! (Book Two) (Spoilers Inside!)

Well he was the only one I did something with. I just ignored steel whenever. So fanboy might have something to do with it

Well telling the doc could go either way since way it depends on the puppet treatment. He literally left me after telling the truth so be careful

What did you say ?

That milk throws me off. What does it have to do with anything?

Wait the mc can go to hospital. I always thought step get captured by rangers after that. So how did u do it?

I think as long as you are friends/dating you always have at least one way of having them believe you, it all depends on your choices of where and how you reveal it.

You can rescue yourself as puppet from the hospital if you are stuck in their body.

Lol, Herald is such baby of the team :joy: :joy: :joy: They all warn MC when they notice that MC has some… plans. Honestly, I’m not sure if I find it adorable or rather annoying

In one of his POVs he wondered how he could be so blind when he can normally notice so many things in people xD

I’m guessing you only see those if you romance him right? I don’t remember ever having those dialogues after all.

To be fair I didn’t expect his romance to be good. I just did cos why not. U can tell him u are a regene but that’s about it. He doesn’t get put off about it surprising since everyone knows what they are

So I finally learned how to code dive and…

Holy shit, Herald has the brass balls to pin Argent to a wall?! Not only that, but he can stick to his guns and provoke her to fight back? And it’s Argent that backs down?!

Golden Boy, I take back everything I’ve ever said about you. Goddamn…

Hm…she was playing pretend…you know she could erase him, right?

He could also carry a van if he wanted to.

Yes, I noticed that, too. He’s the only one succeeding in punching Argent after she ripped Sidestep’s face/eye out. Ortega and Steel wanted to punch Argent but it only stopped with thoughts, they never did it.
I think this shows Herald can do unexpected things. He’s having a lot of potential at the moment (perceptive + gravity powers). He will become more important to the plot once he gains his confidence. He already takes initiative cutting down Ortega in the middle of the argument in his romance route.

I think Herald has that effect not only on Argent.
My opinion is that Sidestep changes to a certain extent in Herald’s romance path.
Sidestep is more worried that Herald’s so perceptive and that he would see so many things. But I think Sidestep’s not aware they’re being influenced by Herald. Like becoming soft.

Unfortunately for all the “our Sidestep isn’t the original!” theory fans, there’s no evidence I’ve seen for it and substantial evidence against. Facial scars yes, but all the other scars, the video Chen saw, the memories Sidestep has, etc. etc.

One of Ortega's Epilogues sums it up well:

Dead, all this time. Replaced by a smirking copy (…) Something chafes. Something more than Chen trying to tell [Ortega] he (…) had seen pictures. (…)
The scars. Who would go out of their way to reproduce them? [Sidestep] never took [Sidestep’s] clothes off.
Except for the time [Sidestep] did, and [Ortega] remembers the scars, and they were all there.
No reason to go to that level of detail. No reason to even know all the ones that were there. Even [Ortega] hadn’t seen them back then, but [Ortega] knows the injuries by heart.
It doesn’t make sense. A copy doesn’t make sense.

Sidestep even considers the possibility and rejects it:

Would you even know?
No. No. You would. You would know. This is you. All you. Your choices led you here, and even through the pain, you can’t help but feel proud. You did this on your own. No orders. No control.

That said, there are quite a few lines (mainly but not exclusively by Ortega) suggesting that the ‘original’ Sidestep would never have committed any of these crimes. While these are filtered through people who arguably never really knew Sidestep at all the first time, and most definitely not by the second time Sidestep has escaped the Farm, there is still a thread of doubt there.

I would like to put forward another theory to explain these lines. I wanted to wait until I had collected my thoughts/rantings in one place and done another deep dive into the game, but sadly I am not sure I will get the time to do so, so I’ll just throw it out there for now.
We have strong hints that something foreign, likely Heartbreak or a piece thereof, (but possibly something else connected to the gates, also possibly some kind of conditioning from the Farm) is hiding in or accessing Sidestep’s mind. We also have a few less certain but equally interesting hints that this thing is capable of influencing Sidestep’s mind.

So the theory I put forward is thus: that in fact Sidestep’s fall to villainhood may not have been Sidestep’s choice at all. Whether by Heartbreak ‘pulling strings’ or by Farm conditioning or something else. I actually suspect Farm conditioning could be the reason a suicidal Sidestep doesn’t go farther than thoughts.

I am not necessarily a fan of this theory:

While I do especially love the way this would challenge Sidestep’s views – from being so certain that these actions were completely under Sidestep’s control, that any mistakes were at least the result of Sidestep’s own decisions (and taking comfort in this) – I do not like the corollary that Sidestep is not responsible for what may be some truly heinous decisions. It does not fit in well with the overall story and its themes and would be, in my opinion, sidestepping the issue of Sidestep’s culpability. A cop out to redeem someone who might very well have done irredeemable things, with some troubling implications given the kinds of people/experiences that provide the sources of inspiration for Sidestep’s issues and the paternalistic view society can have of these people.

Although it would be interesting and, I suppose, ‘meta’, to cast Sidestep as being a victim of us, the players themselves, for making Sidestep do these things.

On another note, currently I’ve only been working off of game content and it seems like everyone else here is as well. Does anyone know what the rules are regarding the Patreon content? Would I be allowed to share (short) quotes similarly here to support or disprove theories? Not a patron right now but I’ve been considering it.

As I understand, usually sharing content that is hidden by a paywall on Patreon is a big no-no to anyone who owns a Patreon. That’s like an Unspoken rule.

Of course, everyone is entitled to bend that rule as they see fit. Just don’t start a trend you can’t control Senpai lol or just stick by the Unspoken rule for safety.

Is the above comment from Patreon? Should I flag it?

Hmmmm good point. I had not thought of it like that. I’ll remove my comment, and look the other way about anything being talked about

From what I see it, it depends on the author but personally, I wouldn’t share something that the author have put up on Patreon out of respect to the author as well as those who put their money to support the author. But like E_RedMark said, don’t start something that might get out of control. ^^;
