Hosted Games has a new game for you to play!

Five years after graduating high school, you and your old friends are drawn back together by a mysterious letter. Through it, you inherit a Gothic manor and a fortune beyond belief. There is only one condition: you must live in the manor together.

Eldritch Tales: Inheritance is 33% off until October 9th!

Eldritch Tales: Inheritance is a 210,000-word interactive novel by Dariel Ivalyen that blends psychological, supernatural, and cosmic horror with drama, investigation, and romance. It’s entirely text-based—without graphics or sound effects—and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.

When you arrive at Blackthorn Manor, strange events begin to unfold. Shadows move on their own, nights grow unnaturally dark, and every corner hides a secret. And the more you uncover, the less you understand. As the atmosphere thickens, you will have to decide whether to trust your companions—or even yourself.

  • Play as male, female, or nonbinary.
  • Customize your appearance, personality, and sexuality.
  • Choose from six distinct backgrounds—Astronomer, Songwriter, Egyptologist, Gardener, Detective, or Librarian—each with a unique story path and an exclusive ending.
  • Forge friendships or romances with a wealthy playboy, a no-nonsense scientist, a protective ex-soldier, or a free-spirited artist.
  • Balance your sanity, health, and relationships—or suffer the consequences.
  • Explore hidden rooms, secret passages, and places beyond human imagination, and learn—or risk learning—the truth behind your inheritance.
  • Experience randomized events and discover multiple endings, ensuring no two playthroughs are alike.

What darkness lies within Blackthorn Manor? Will you turn away in time—or will you uncover
truths that consume you forever?

Dariel developed this game using ChoiceScript, a simple programming language for writing multiple-choice interactive novels like these. Writing games with ChoiceScript is easy and fun, even for authors with no programming experience. Write your own game and Hosted Games will publish it for you, giving you a share of the revenue your game produces.

This game is not being released on Steam at this time; the erroneous link has been removed. Thank you for catching it!

Picked it up, looking forward to playing it.

For anyone who likes Lovecraftian tales and is picking this one up, think about grabbing Highlands, Deep Waters as well, which in my estimation is the best cosmic horror game across all the ChoiceScript brands. Whiskey-Four is up there, too. I feel like I’m forgetting a few, too, but those two spring immediately and most prominently to mind.

I’m happy to have this latest in the mix! Congratulations on the launch!

Is there really no epilogue if you stay behind?

Hello, I made this new account after years of reading these kind of stories but never partaking in the forum. Does somebody know if this is the thread for putting our experiences and different paths? It’s a pretty cool release with a strong start, but the end kinda sours the mood. I want to know if people found all the archievements and I don’t want to spoiler anything either if this is not the thread for it

Thank you in advance!

Hello! This is my first post after trying to find out how the site works  I hope I chose the right tag, on tablet everything seems so confusing… But it’s about time that I join the forum site after years of reading all kinds of stories from this beautiful site and no one to share thoughts with. Lately one story captivated me that I just have to ask what others have experienced, since there aren’t any discussions of paths or anything like that at the moment… so might as well start with this one

As the title says, it’s about one of the newer games from Hosted games! This post will be probably filled with spoilers, so please go experience it on your own first (if you care about spoilers and/or want a fresh experience first). With that out of the way…

[details=Welcome to the discussion! :blush:]

My first impression was great! It’s one of those stories where the way the author wrote it (grammar, expressions, descriptions of surroundings,…) instantly resonates with you and you can keep reading it. On my first playthrough I even felt dread and fear as the story progressed and even spared quick glances at my door and window :joy:
But after trying out some of the endings, the athmosphere… kinda fizzled out? For context I chose being a gardener and got my sarcasm and recklessnes up to 70, the rational to 65 and tried to get the friendship of the others as high as possible (but without romantic options).

One thing that I noticed is that the sanity keeps going down and it only can go up just in the beginning, when you have to choose who to have your room closest with, (I chose Luna because she said she had a view on the garden and well… seemed fitting for a gardener too :joy:), and she comforts you from the nightmare. Or… strangely when you choose to rest on the bed in one of the randomised events when you choose to investigate instead of sleeping (sorry Julia!) That’s about all I could find and in the end it all goes back to 40% in the next chapters, but strangely never enough to go to 0% before the last chapter? Is that possible/ have you found out an extra ending for when that occurs? Also certain events where the character is described as to have been damaged (spider bite, falling, hitting head, dashing straight at a wall, jumping in thorn filled bushes, hitting the strange rose metal bar) never actually decrease health? Only the painting at the beginning did. Please do comment if that is purpouseful

So… where did the “fizzle out of the atmosphere” kick in? When I read that damned ending “so wellafter going to different psychologists you still had trauma from the events at the mansion and for the first time in months you slept well, oh wait no, you still exhausted. Welp I guess cope with it.” four times already! They come in some slight variations, but that’s about all the endings I got. Even in the earliest chapter when you choose to go into the forest deeper, that damn ending pops up! And it doesn’t even make sense, since you basically died, no? Or at the very least spirited away. Yet it doesn’t mention any of your friends worried asking where you got, or any mention of your friends at all OR even a mention of you not wanting to think about the forest (if your character really survived that)? And any option of you leaving the house, gets you basically the same answer either you sleeping for the first time in months and feeling exhausted alone or you sleeping for the first time in months and a text from a friend pops up saying “yo, same here. Anyways, bye”.

And on this note, the one different ending that I DID get, basically never mentions your friends either? I’m talking about the ending where in the last chapter after rescuing your friends you want to stay behind in the mansion. And the (probably the woman from the diary) faceless monster thing turns you into a painting á la Harry Potter style. So huh??? If the paintings seem to have been real people, why did they look at me maliciously??? Bi-h you should be grateful that we were trying to solve the mystery :joy: :joy: Also on that note there is no mention of your friends either?? Not a single regret of leaving me behind? Not a single attempt at burning the damn mansion down after me never coming back?? And it seems that it doesn’t even matter how high or low your friendship seems to be, they always react the same.

Be real. Is the gardener too dumb to actually solve anything? I always wondered why his creativity is just at 10% when the job actually gets pretty creative and artistic tending to the plants, etc. Anyways, that’s beside the point. I tried to get 2 stats to the highest, since that seems to be the strategy on most games to get through the success checks. Getting the fitness and perception to 80%, but I never really got the impression of them doing anything? All the time when I tried to move away or get through the surreal power I thought fitness would do anything against (maybe standing for willpower too), I basically failed (or well, became controlled by those forces). It really should be standard to explain what all of the stats mean in the context of the game, bc it can get really confusing especially when you don’t have access to the code and see what checks are being tested…

That’s about all the playtrhough I got. Please do share your experience too! Do you agree with some points? Do you see differently? What kinds of endings do there exist too? What archievements are there? I only got fifteen out of twenty-six possible archievments those being:

  • Chapter1,2,3,4 survivor
  • Letter from a dead guy, home sweet castle
  • Hungry eyes, what a beech!, Who’s driving? On the radio
  • Curiosity killed the cat
  • Maybe next time ?
  • Bye for now
  • Just in time
  • One of them now

Now, after my rant you might think I hate the story but it was pretty enjoyable at the beginning! And while the horror kinda faded and I got increasingly frustrated that they won’t do certain actions as expected, it’s just me getting passionate about a new favourite of mine [/details]

I really respect all the authors putting their stories as interactive games and thank you deeply for sharing them with us! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:  As I understand it’s pretty niche and that not many people are aware of.

For me personally as the years went by, I increasingly lost the time to actually go through every path and finding out every little secret, as it takes a lot of energy to get through the stories, so that’s why I opened this account to try to find out all of the paths and archievements together with ya’all, as some of you might have the same problem too :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

I also can’t sadly access the code to see all paths, as I read from my phone and the hosted games/choice of games apps and if the game doesn’t include a discord, I may never find out all the paths. (Which is not a critique to say to make less paths for one time readers! Not at all! The paths and little conversations that differ based on your choices IS what makes such a interactive book  ).

Anyways thank you for reading and feel free to share any thoughts!

Oh ok! I just made an extra post just in case for all people that read the book and don’t mind spoilers/ want to share the archievements they got.

Usually, discussion of a game stays in the release thread to keep the forum from getting messy with individual discussion threads.

Oh, thanks for the clarification! It was just so long that I didn’t see it relevant for the announcement part as a comment, since most people don’t want any spoilers and to leave the announcement, well… as an announcement where like this beginning people congratulate the author or smaller stuff. Also when somebody might search for achievements, they probably won’t see announcement as a Discussion thread, so I’m afraid it won’t get seen

But then again you’re longer on this site that I am! I will keep the discussions in the announcements then

Mmmh, I tried to hide my long paragraphs like you did your second example, but how did you write it? It didn’t work for me to write [details=the summary]blablabla[/details] =(

Oh nevermind! Found it in the +

Re: Eldritch Tales.

Some informal critiques of the game. In no particular order:

First, after a few playthroughs, I tried riding this game all the way to the end. I ended up becoming a spider. Weird… but, “eldritch”?

At one point, a huge spider actually spoke to us! It seemed very pleased at being able to communicate with us – but no actual attempt at communication with it was provided for!

Despite some randomization, I also found that repeated p!aythroughs were largely very predictable.

Next, although declining sanity and the word “eldritch” are generally associated with the works of H. P. Lovecraft, I found nothing particularly Lovecraftian here. Very weird, yes, and even otherworldly… but there is not even the faintest suggestion of any creatures or beings from the Cthulhu mythos.

Finally, the best possible outcome in this game is achieved… by giving up and running away! That is not the way that most COG titles go, and it just felt so very wrong to me!

All told, this game was a disappointment to me. :frowning_face_with_open_mouth:

The word ‘eldritch’ has origins in Old English, which predates Lovecraft. While Lovecraft used the word ‘eldritch’ heavily in his works, nothing in the word’s definition requires a connection to themes in Lovecraft’s work.

Declining sanity is a theme seen in many works of fiction and games (e.g. Alan Wake, Doki Doki Literature Club, Spec Ops: The Line, Heavy Rain) and in no way requires a connection with Lovecraft.

I can’t comment on the other points, however, as I have only played the earlier parts of the game, and in the WIP stage at that.
