Disliked Elements, Mechanics, and Tropes

Omg, yes, one of the deadly sins an author can commit when writing MC.

Amen. I also like it when the MC has a chance to just stare daggers at the person being an ass to them, then walk away without a word. A silent “fuck you”, if you will. But, ffs, after that happens, do not make the MC go crawling back to the asshole. Make the asshole seek out the MC.

Ugh, apologizing to mc for their behavior is an allergy for them, worse is the player/mc was forced to interact with them to “understand” why they behave that way is so cheap.

I was recently preached at by someone who said that there are certain romance options where, the only way there can be a romance is if the MC turns into a doormat and that there is no other way to write them, so just suck it up and be a doormat. I sat there staring at my screen for about five minutes, thinking I couldn’t have read that right. Hell, even with yanderes, the MC isn’t always forced to be a total doormat!

 it seems that person is a total masochist with an excuse of “it’s only fiction.” I will end it as that and will not dragging it further. We really need more mc with a backbone unless the players are purposely role playing as weak ass mc.

Good thing all of my works have no spineless/indecisive/weak MCs. I simply don’t like how these characters simply like to be thrown around by everyone else for the readers’ delight.

Now I’m curious what IF you mean and if I know it.

This is true. Sometimes I like to roleplay as one of these weak MCs, just to make her find a inner fire and become a badass as the story progress. Or a weak MC that become feral when someone she loves is in danger.

But this is my opinion and it should be an option, not the only way to play a game. And the least that an author can do when putting an asshole RO is giving the player a choice of their route being “enemies to lovers” or “punchbag to lovers”.

Oh yesterday I saw on tumblr an upcoming IF where you can romance your fucking bully. Who wouldn’t love becoming a literal punchbag and smooch the guy who tries to make your life hell just because, am I right? Wink wink

Oh, I don’t know. Some people do like being a punching bag actually. I’m not sure if it’s a bully in a kinky way though, or another one of those “be nice to them and mb they’ll change”.

I think this is the thing. If it’s there as an option that’s cool and can be perfectly enjoyable (especially, for me, if you can hulk out at some point). But if that’s the only way of playing it can be tiring, and it won’t be in line with the usual expectations people have with these kinds of games where at least a bit of MC personalisation is desirable. (I feel like a lot of the fun for me of romancing a “mean” character is the back-and-forth snark anyway, heh)

That sounds toxic and disturbing. I wonder if these people don’t have some problem in their personal lives that caused such… preferences.

And here I am barely stifling a yawn when I see another knight gallant in shining armour with no flaws and niceness overwhelming any recognizing features they could’ve had. When you have an ability to hit back, ROs that don’t immediately fall under your charms and have character features beyond being nice are much more enjoyable than those standard ones for me.

Besides, it’s fiction. Combative and competitive ROs are much more fun there, especially if they have spine and backbone. If they have tried to kill me at least once, that’s a keeper.

I don’t really think that’s fair. People enjoy playing or reading/watching tons of things that they wouldn’t want to engage with or have happen to them in real life. It may not be one’s own cup of tea but there doesn’t have to be a particular reason - or anything untoward - that leads them to find a fictional thing entertaining. (and when we’re talking about something innocuous like this, if it is related to something in a person’s life - that’s OK too, it’s no one’s business but theirs)

Whether I think that dynamic always makes for a well designed game, or that it will suit everyone (nothing suits everyone!) is another matter

You know people can have kinks, without that meaning they have mental issues?

Just because you don’t like something, doesn’t mean it is not likeable.

I must admit your assertion doesn’t only feel self-centered but deeply immature.

There’s no need to call out people who don’t share your tastes, in obvious fiction, in such a rude and uncalled manner.

I just said what I think, you don’t have to start the lecture right away. And I don’t see anything rude about it, especially since I’m not addressing any specific person just talking in general. No need to be so oversensitive.

I will start a lecture anytime, when you basically called out a group of people.

If you can’t deal with the consequences of your acts, don’t do the act. Simple.

Yes. For me, to he reason for making “weak” MCs it’s to make them hulk at some point, it’s so good.

When we can bite back a “tsundere” RO and still keep their romance route, how you said before, it’s okay. Banter is fun. The problem is that sometimes we don’t have this option or if we bite back the RO starts to hate us even more and we are out of their route.

The kill thing is a turn off for me. Hm except if the RO loses control or is being controlled by someone and try to kill me, then it’s a big turn on, actually.

I love a RO from an otome game that ate a chunk of my MC’s arm LOL

You can keep bristling if you want, I’m not going to argue about, what? Because I was wondering about the possible causes of such ‘kinks’? I didn’t even say a word about “mental issues” because that’s not what I meant.

No thanks.

One of my favourite love interests out of released books is Hawkins, an enemy ace that was quite insistent on constantly throwing batchals in our face. Despite his tendency to focus on combat and little else, he was such a wonderful character with such a wonderful dynamic, it’s hard not to like him even if he’d kill our character and would have done so without a very romantic and very stupid gesture.

Well, for me they’re a great deal of fun. I absolutely adore the thing tumblr constantly repeats either as a meme or a writing prompt, swords to each other’s throats.

I especially like it when it’s as spicy as constantly fighting each other and finding solace in the understanding you’ve found in your greatest foe. Char Aznable and Amuro Ray, ya?

If you’re really interested there’s plenty of literature you could chew on and plenty of people you could talk to, but it’s probably not a right idea to start this conversation by reacting in a gasp horrible! “there must be something wrong with them!” way.
