December 2022's Writer's Support Thread

I just hit the first 500 words of my project and my goal for december is just to write consistently, even if it’s 10 words a day. baby steps, I guess! this story has been building up in the back of my mind for some time and I finally started working on it, so that’s a win.

It’s been a fun few months off. More time with the girls, beefed up the eBay store, and enjoyed my first games of my beloved Star Wars CCG since I swore it off in May of 2021 in order to finish Day After. But it’s time to get back on the horse, and turn Grandparenting Simulator from something I talk about to something I actually do. Good luck to all who are writing this holiday season.

My goal for December is to get the next version of Turncoat Chronicle ready for beta testing. First a closed beta, and later a full public beta.

It’s an ambitious goal, but I’m getting bored of waffling and half-measures. I’m finishing this thing this year, by hook or by crook.

I’m a bit late, but my main goal for December is to release the demo for my next WIP. The new project is called The Elder Crystals, and it’s going to be set in a high fantasy world. I’m still waiting for some art files (logo, headers, first portraits), but I should be able to release the demo by the end of the week.

I also want to write about 35.000 words.

Btw, I was able to submit The Hidden Sanctum to Hosted Games a couple of weeks ago! I’m still waiting for the team to accept my submission, but that’s probably normal. I need to stop worrying and be more patient :yellow_heart:

Edit: Just got an email from Jason. THS got added to the cue!

To all the folks who set monthly goals: remember that December is basically half holidays, so your writing time will probably be smaller than usual, whether because your family demands your time (ugh, family, amirite?) or because your boss wants extra hours from you while half the staff goes on holidays (ugh, bosses, amirite?) or because something else (ugh, something elses, amirite?), so don’t stress out if this month turns out to be less productive than usual or planned (ugh, usuals and planneds, amirite?).

Happy holidays and all that jazz, amirite (ugh, amirites, amirite?)?

@JBento this is SUCH good advice to remember: I always get a shocked pikachu face when mid January comes around and I feel like I’m behind on things.

My goal is to finish my second chapter and (hopefully!) update it on Dashingdon sometime this month. Then, make some progress on chapter 3!

My vision for Operator has changed quite a lot from what it originally was but I’m having fun!

Something I was wondering if I could ask for advice on from other writers… How much content is advisable to finish before beginning to share things about it? I don’t have enough right now, I know, but is it around 10k words? 20k? More or less? I’m going to try finishing the prologue and first chapter first, maybe? But I was wondering what other people thought.

Response to @LiliArch :
Yeah, I suppose at a certain point solo testing on my own will be a hassle, and I’ll need advice on the writing and such. I’m a bit nervous though since my story seems really different from anything I’ve seen. I’m worried no one will like it lol. I suppose right now though there isn’t a real need to be anxious since it’s so early, if is so desperately in need of assistance than I can just get feedback lol.

Response to @E_RedMark :
Yeah, I think keeping in mind that it is normal helps quell the fear even if only slightly. I am just going to keep a bubbly optimistic feeling that it’ll go well if I can! When it comes to waiting for 3 chapters…? That would be a shit ton of writing, I can’t properly explain why though without telling a lot about the intended story structure. I’m really excited to share though! I feel a lot better about this project than the one I was working on before, it’s funny because I’m so much more in my depths with Historical Fantasy but it’s a Superhero-based story that has successfully held my attention.

I think the general advice is, enough to give a feel of your story, and at the point when you feel you’d benefit from feedback.

yeah, like around 3 chapters. Especially if you have a large cast and romance? So, kinda introduce at least 2 or so, and give some choices to give peoples a taste of the MC they can be or make.

Thats normal fear. You have no idea how many writers think that. ‘Urgh, my story sound so boring…’', ‘‘Urgh why didn’t I think of making a story like That one?’’.

Your job is to have fun writing it, and love it enough that it seep in your writing.

wait a sec…

Are you saying your game is about Super Heroes?

OH MAH GAD! GET OFF YA LAZY ASS AND RELEASE THE DEMO ALREADY! I GOTTA PLAY IT!

Come on! Gimmeeeeeeeee!

I would say that depends on the length of chapters (3 chapters could just as well be a playthrough length of 4.5k than 30k)

Unless it’s just number puzzles, and if the grammar holds enough, I know I’m going to be interested.

and…your point is what?

The superhero elements are very low key to start. I can give you a little insight though if you are interested. The Operator was originally intended purely to be about the Operator, the person responsible for organizing a group of superheroes on missions and for gathering info on them.

Some insight on how it's changed

The story has changed though, and the title is now a WIP, because now it’s about the lives of 3 people (the three backgrounds you select from). One becomes the Operator, one becomes a Hero, and one becomes a Villain, before potentially learning to change their lives, it’s about their interplay and shit. So basically, the story entirely changes depending on background and choices made. The 2 backgrounds you don’t check have characters written to fill the role you don’t play. That’s why 3 chapters would be a lot to write beforehand. Talk about a choice that matters!

Heavy handed? Did I say something rude?

Right, I forgot you hate numbers. Forget I said anything.

Geez…

Going heavy handed there, are we? lol

well, whatever. Looking forward to the demo!

They hate me back if it’s any consolation.

But I thought I read somewhere around here that 3 chapters are what’s recommended.

The epilogue alone is just not enough.

Poke @LiliArch you never replied to my PM Butthurt

What do you mean by heavy handed? I’m a bit confused, I looked it up, and it says clumsy? Honestly, originally I planned it to be more streamlined/linear. However, I just didn’t find it as compelling, and I couldn’t find a way for each of the backgrounds to end up in the same place. I donno… :dotted_line_face: I am much happier writing them separately even if it is a massive pain in my ass.

It allows me to explore a ton of shit I couldn’t if I only did one background or told one version of the story. I am really excited! If anxious, but excited~!

When it comes to the quality in the demo… Heavy handed would probably be generous for the current form it takes lol, I am very out of practice.
