Dashingdon: Free ChoiceScript Game Hosting

Not sure. But they’re a small company, especially when it comes to the IT side. So I wouldn’t assume it’s on their priority list, especially with cogdemos and itch.io currently availble as alternatives for us in the independent developer community.

Authors can also compile their games and upload them here, although that’s less friendly for mobile.

It’s necessary to remove Dashingdon? I tried to use CoGDemos and I didn’t like it. It’s impractical, and annoying to use :person_shrugging:

What. The. Fuck! Gotta learn how to save these games before it’s too late. So many treasures about to be lost forever.

This is giving me flashbacks to the time we lost Dropbox support. :sob:

But looks like we have a way to save dead WIPs, as per @TemplarFounder’s instructions, unlike when Dropbox died…

Thank you so much for everything you’ve done!

Now I have to understand another way of hosting games again, I am terribly untechnical… :smiling_face_with_tear:

Thank you for all the years of hosting! I will need to remember to get all my bits and pieces off before the end of the month. Your site has saved one of my games when my computer had a meltdown and I could recover the majority of it from the last files I’d uploaded to dashingdon’s due to a lapse in backing up on my part.

Thank you for all your hard work! It’s the end of an era.

The new website seems pretty decent and straight forward. Hopefully everyone is able to migrate over smoothly.

Thanks for everything you did, it is greatly appreciated.

Pretty sure they would need to enforce all the rules that need to be followed for the released game there to. Meiakg that some games would not be allowed there even if the Author never wants to releases it through choice of games.

And because these rules aren’t even that clear, to that degree that some if Authors decided to migrate Thier game towards twine or similar.

Except that the sort does not seem to work right. Especially sort by Updated seem to have all mixed up.

Like a game says last updated Dec 11, 2024
But under it the game is last updated Jan 03, 2025

There was once Dropbox support?

You used to be able to share a link to your WIP on Dropbox and it would play on anyone’s browser. Then Dropbox changed its security settings, and that wouldn’t work any more. That’s when Dashingdon got big, thanks to Don’s willingness to host so many games on a server he personally managed.

Ah, I think I now remember that. I think I tried it im WIPs that shared the how-to, it was years ago(?) and not when I have an account here.

So are we allowed to archive all the games?

Quick question. Are we allowed to archive the games. (Especially the old abandoned ones?)
(Obviously I am not changing anything on the games code. And credit all the authors.)

And if yes, are we allowed to use web crawlers or similar tools to automate the process?

I had no idea there was a person behind the name of the website–I sort of figured it was an official CoG thing. Thank you so much for providing this service for us for as long as you did. I’m very sad to see it go, but happy I got to see it at all.
