College Tennis: Origin Story (WIP) - Updated 8 Jun '25 [968k words]

This ties in to an idea I had about giving the player some leeway in choosing a doubles partner

i literally dont even know the basics of tennis but i mald everytime someone gets a point over me (my competitive ass) because losing a no-no. but i enjoyed the machanics of this game alot, and i think i learned a lil more aboute tennis because of this if. Had to search some tennis terms cause i couldnt process properly. and the sense of pride i got winning the 5mile race all because i love track and my go to for any stat based game is something related to agility and endurance.
anyways great job, looking forward to the next update

Something I just realised about the first match with Emerson is that says we go for the first break/sit down of the match after the end of the fourth game, but isn’t that wrong though?

Every tennis match I’ve watched, you take a break after the end of the third game of a set, then every two games after that.

Man this game is giving me flashbacks to my high school tennis days. Honestly that challenge match with Jacks was more intense than any of the matches I ever played XD

Oh absolutely! The match against Sam’ll be a very different ballgame from MC playing against Rayyan, for sure, because there’s less of that gritty, fiery rivalry, and more of a feeling of… coming up against someone who knows you like the back of their hand. And @Edgewen - of course, I too am excited for the match to give players the chance to “flirt their butts off” and arrive at some stunning realisations

@Cloudy - Oh, there’s possibility of drama for sure :joy: Yeah, I’d say I had the distinct imagination of there being some sort of angst regarding trying to make something work with Sam only for it to fall apart with distance (hence the earlier prologue choices… and my attempt to inject some foreboding premonitions about doing long distance).

@ChairmanMeow - Yes, it would definitely affect gameplay in terms of ease of coming to the net/poaching/hitting volleys, sliced shots (and hopefully this will be even more obvious in doubles)! Good idea on putting dominant hand and backhand style in the roster. I’ll see to it in the next update  Also, good catch on the break being after the third game and all opposite games after - not sure where the error occurs but I’ll fix it when I do a review of the challenge matches!

@Edgewen, @idonotlikeusernames, and @kckolbe - Yes, I’m still debating fixing MC’s partner vs. giving players 2 choices (the con for the latter would be that I would have to write at least 2 versions of every subsequent doubles match, and this might reduce the amount of variations I can accommodate based on MC’s playing style - if I simplify MC’s partner, I can potentially allow more branching of tennis match scenes depending on MC’s choices and strengths). Four options here:

  • Giving players a choice for the friendly match and not for the eventual fixed partner for the season
  • Giving players a choice for the fixed partner and not for the friendly match
  • Giving players a fixed partner for both
  • Giving players a choice for both (unlikely)

We’ll see.

For the friendly match, Rayyan-MC vs. Tobin-Deepal was one possibility I was toying with, and Rayyan-Jacks vs. Tobin-MC was another, just so it stacks up strength-wise.

@Bruhmoment Aw, glad to hear it! :star_struck: Your mom should play the game :stuck_out_tongue:

@Yuugay0334 HAHA! Competitive streak flares up whenever you play, huh? Thanks, glad you liked the mechanics, and congrats on winning the 5-mile race - ever since I adjusted the stats based on my beta-testers’ feedback, I’ve not won the 5-mile race ever again (when playing through myself)! :joy:

@Titanwithwings hahaha, so good to hear, and glad you got to relive some of your high school tennis action!

I think the first option would be best, as that way we still get some choice while not making it writing hell for you. A potential problem though is that the fixed partner might seem like an odd choice, for example if the MC does incredibly well with Tobin and then the fixed partner is Rayyan.

I feel like for the “friendly match”, the choice means less and it should be about whichever dynamics will be more fun to write out.

For the season…pains me to say, but I think that making the games more interesting outweighs that customization. I would rather have the branching.

There is always the option of doing a fixed partner now and maybe adding choices later if you feel like it.

Again else get kind of annoyed with Sam when they kiss you as you’re leaving (if you flirt with them at the beginning)?

Getting rejected was one thing (and I don’t actually mind the whole long-distance, mutual-pining dynamic), but then getting kissed almost immediately after being rejected got me so mad at them (the mixed signals, making it harder to get over them, etc.). Really wish there was an option to not let them kiss you (or push them away if they do kiss you) and be upset with them/tell them off.

@ChairmanMeow I found it kind of odd too. However the scene plays out, you’re still just friends at the end of it, just either with the possibility of a relationship open or not. Apart from what you mentioned, if MC decides to remain friends only, Sam still kisses them, which I think makes less sense because the MC has firmly closed the door there (at least for now).

@burninglights Will being left-handed have any disadvantages in the game? In tennis in the real world, lefties don’t seem to have any, but that doesn’t seem like a good idea in a game, because then everyone would just be left handed. Or, instead of adding disadvantages, you could just make sure that they don’t have too big of an advantage, so that players who want to be right-handed can do that and achieve similar results. This would probably be the option that’s closer to real life, because while left-handed players have an advantage, tennis isn’t dominated by them, and in fact most of the all time greats are right handed.

Great game! So fun. The characters are all full of charisma, love it.

I am a rather poor critic lol have nothing bad or usefull to say. Except for some expected and minor problems like phrases duplicated and the pronouns of gender selected characters being incoherent in some parts. Overall was such a fun and immersive journey. Almost makes my lazy ass want to play tennis lmao

I don’t have any coockie, so i’ll send good vibes ~~

Honestly I like the idea of giving the MC partner choices. For example just throwing this out there but if by some chance Rayyan is on this list of partners I could see him looking toward my freshman MC who shot up the rankings by the end of the second week. I don’t see Rayyan having the same consideration for an MC who lost both or even one of their first matches even if that MC somehow makes it into the final six. So personally I would prefer a partner choice for high ranking vs low ranking MCs. And I completely understand the possibility of there being less of an option to expand based on the MC’s playing style because of that. But honestly I love this story was just giving some feedback whatever you decide I’m sure will be amazing.

Thanks for the ideas, guys!!
@Cloudy - Agree. I think having players choose their doubles partners would make most sense narratively, and it’s the one I most want to implement.

But also brings me to the other point that I’ll have to see if it’s doable, because I agree with @kckolbe:

@Anarore_Kriptih After considering my options, I think I’ll actually go with 2 “friendly” partner, and 2 choices for season partner, and possibly take out the option for the season partner later on if it gets to be too much work.

@ChairmanMeow and @cloudy Ah - noted, I’ll edit such that Sam only kisses you if you chose to leave things open ended or express desire to pursue a long-distance relationship. And I’ll consider adding options equivalent to pushing them away and saying “are you sure this is a good idea?” Thanks for the feedback

On the left-hand advantage, yup, leaning towards this:

So, I’ll add in some (infrequent) situations where being left-handed gives you an extra option/choice in a match. (I think there’s already 1 such case in the Jacks? match? I’ll have to check). Otherwise, no other advantages.

@greed1 Aww, thank you!! Good vibes very much appreciated! If you don’t mind, do send the duplicated phrases and gender problems in (as quotes) - that would be very helpful!

@Nyc789 - Oh absolutely. I think it makes complete sense that Rayyan would be pissed off as heck if a low-ranked MC gets paired with them. In fact, that’s a plot point I’ve actually got planned for the game  Really appreciate your feedback, and so glad you enjoyed the game!!

Finally got around to playing the update since I’ve forgotten to do so until now. I do appreciate all the new additions. There was a an error when I respond to the post-Rayyan run conversation with “it was quite enjoyable actually” it hits me with 2-1 line 1626: non-existent variable ‘Rayyan_friendly’ but everything else works.
I decided to start over with the new update just to make sure I wasn’t gonna mess up anything. Having lots of fun with teasing/flirting with Rayyan with the fastest yet simultaneously weakest gremlin on the team >:p

HAHAHAHA, this is hilarious! Error 404: friendly Rayyan not found.

So I finally got around to replaying this after the new update. I got up to the end of the match against Rayyan, and I found a few minor grammar/wording errors. Please let me know if I’m being too nitpicky.

Feedback

“You’re in the big leagues now” should be “You were in the big leagues now”.

The “your” highlighted in the selected option should be “my”.

A winner is when the opponent doesn’t get to the ball, so maybe you could change “Rayyan’s return goes straight into the net” to something about how the ball bounces twice or it goes past her.

The highlighted pronouns should be in lowercase.

The “is” should be “are”.

Actually, that one’s good. The one that needs correcting is the option above, where “my blinding speed” should be “your blinding speed”. The prompt is in the second person (“Your serve is good.”) Or maybe not. How are the options phrased in the other choices?

Sorry for the delay, but I’ve been thinking about this a lot, and wanted to present a compromise option.

What if, for the season, you STARTED with an assigned partner, but then halfway through were given the option to switch? Or, perhaps even better, your partner gets injured, forcing a switch, but then you have to decide which partner to stick with?

The choices in the other options use first person. Also, it’s the player making the statement, like in those surveys where they ask you how much you agree on a particular statement, so I think it should be in first person.

It’s impossible to have Tricky > 50 during the match against Emerson, because Tricky is calculated with FairMath:

*selectable_if ((tricky > 50) and (tactics > 23)) #Pretend to yelp and protect my face, only to swing at the last moment and hit the ball in a short dropshot.

Same during the match against Jacks:

*selectable_if (tricky > 50) #Fortunately, I still have enough in me to run for it, pretend to drop, then lob it up high.

I also noticed that the Condition stat often stays the same when I choose to take a nap or stuff like that. That’s because:

*set condition %+1
only works if your condition is <= 0

*set condition %+2
only works if your condition is <= 50

*set condition %+3
only works if your condition is <= 66

*set condition %+4
only works if your condition is <= 75

*set condition %+5
only works if your condition is <= 80

*set condition %+6
only works if your condition is <= 83

I would avoid using FairMath (%+x) for such small increases, they’re just wasted most of the time. I would use +1, +2, +3 etc.
